This paper will describe the large caisson pier foundations for four of the bridges crossing the Mississippi River in the New Orleans area; and will discuss some of the unusual problems encountered during their sinking. Certain settlement phenomena experienced during their service life will also be related: The four bridges in order of their construction: The Huey P. Long Bridge, River Mile 106.1, completed in 1935 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.1, River Mile 96.0, completed in 1958 The Hale Boggs Bridge, River Mile 121.6, completed in 1983 The Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2, River Mile 96.1, completed in 1988 Each of these bridges employed large open-dredged concrete caissons as foundations for one or more of the river piers, with the smallest being the 65ft by 102ft caissons for Piers I and II of the Huey P. Long Bridge and the largest being the 99ft by 214ft caisson for Pier II of the Greater New Orleans Bridge No.2. The Huey P. Long caissons are founded in a dense fine sand at -170 while all of the other bridge caissons are founded in hard preconsolidated clay at elevations varying from -150 to -185. The Huey P. Long Bridge is currently being widened without increasing the caisson foundations under any of the river piers; and the design reasoning that led to this decision is presented.

The aim of this study was to develop an integrated approach to enable identification of areas favourable for the presence of massive sulphide deposits in a given region (Las Herrerias, Spain). It is based on geochemical soil exploration, geophysical surveying (ground gravimetry), detailed geological mapping and a knowledge of the deposits of the South Iberian Massive Sulphide Belt. The multi-dataset approach consists, in the first instance, in standardizing and combining all the geochemical data with reference to their geological setting. Next, the "heavy" anomalies are extracted from the gravimetric survey, regardless of the surrounding context (heavy or light). The results from these two stages are then crossed, so that areas where heavy anomalies are associated with geochemical anomalies can be identified and classified. Crossing the geochemical and geophysical data enables a much tighter selection of anomalies than does the manual superposition of data provided by each method (geology, geophysics, geochemistry).

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of variations in content (near the residual level) of the impurities aluminum, nitrogen, manganese, and copper on the corrosion rate in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam of zircaloy-3, a zirconium-base alloy of 0.25 percent tin and 0.25 percent iron. Thirty-five 10-pound ingots were cast with the appropriate additions of impurity elements, and these were converted to wrought sheets. These specimens were then tested both in water and in steam. The analysis of the resulting data showed that in environments of either pressurized hot water or superheated steam, corrosion rates increased with increasing content of aluminum, nitrogen, or manganese, but were not affected by variations of copper. The effects of aluminum and nitrogen were found to be greater than the effect of manganese. INTRODUCTION At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in August 1956, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Bettis Plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp., began investigating the effects of certain impurity elements on the corrosion rates of zircaloy-3 in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam. It was necessary to know these effects in order to set control limits on residual impurity levels in zirnaloy-3, intended for heat transfer service in the nuclear reactor of the pressurized water type. A factorial expert it was designed by Westinghouse statisticians. The Atomic Energy Commission provided raw zirconium sponge purchased from Wah Chang Corp. The Bureau's laboratory at Albany, Oreg., made material of different combinations of impurity levels and subjected the material to corrosion tests. This report will describe the work done at the Bureau laboratory and will show, quantitatively the effects of different residual levels of aluminum or nitrogen, or manganese or copper on corrosion rates.

Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests on clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.

The Greenwich Collieries Co. is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the PP&L Co. which serves the northeastern portion of Pa. PP&L annually consumes about 11 million tons of coal per year and is the largest consumer of both bituminous and anthracite coal on the eastern seaboard. Development work for Greenwich started in 1969. The coarse coal plant was constructed in 1970, with the raw fines bypassed. This worked very well for our requirements at that time; however, the Greenwich mining plans were extensively changed, longwall mining units were installed and low coal was encountered, resulting in dirtier coal, a finer coal and an ever increasing ash in the shipped product. All this demanded a more efficient ash removal process for the fine coal fraction. In 1971, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency were pushing for the now stringent sulphur emission limits at our power plants. The Greenwich Mine coal reserves contained large quantities of 3.5 to 4% sulphur along with some low sulphur reserves. It was, therefore, essential that any new plant have the capability of efficient sulphur removal to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency required limits. To meet these limits our design would have to be capable of producing a product of 2.0% sulphur or less.

The mineral value in the ores from the Mother Lode mining districts of California is almost entirely gold, Although many mines have produced extremely high-grade ore the usual mill grade averages approximately $7.00 gold per ton. Fully 80 per cent of the gold has been and is now being recovered by amalgamation. Various methods have been introduced to recover the gold that was not obtained by the amalgamation processes. They include vari¬ous kinds of gravity concentration which in some cases were followed by chlorination or cyanidation. The usual practice includes only stamp battery, plate-amalgamation, and vanner concentration. In the very early practice the tails were run to waste through the main drainage streams of the different mining districts. During later years very large storage dumps have been impounded. These old tails, together with those being saved from present mills, furnish the problem discussed in this article. The clean sand portion of these mill tails is amenable to the usual cyanidation. The slime portion contains the major amount of the gold lost, but it also contains 1-1/2 to 3 per cent carbon, which precludes direct cyanidation of this part of these low-grade waste tails. The black carbonaceous slime portion is the particular problem considered in this report.

I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts' work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. Shredding is the usual first step in processing municipal solid waste (MSW) for resource recovery. This unit process requires high capital cost and, usually, considerable maintenance cost. In addition, some shredders at times will render certain components of the MSW in a form difficult to recover. This is particularly true in the way metal cans are distorted and the way glass is pulverized. A trommel screen was proposed (1) to pre-process packer truck refuse prior to shredding. Part of the logic for this step is that the portion of raw refuse already within the specified shredder output particle size range would bypass the primary shredder and proceed directly to further processing, such as to an air classifier or secondary shredder. This would reduce the throughput of the primary shredder and allow certain recoverable materials, such as glass, to remain in larger piece sizes, important for recovery. In this way, operating costs for the shredder would be reduced and the recoverability of materials, and hence the revenue, increased.

SUMMARY: The effects of blasting on structures are assessed on the basis of the maximum amplitudes of the occuring vibration velocities. If the standard values in the German Standard DIN 4150 are not exceeded, damages to structures are not to be expected. The estimation of the maximum vibration amplitudes is usually based on experience or on emperical formulae. However, a comparison of expected with measured values shows that these estimations are not conservative, particulary in case of small distances between blasting locations and structures. More reliable predictions are possible on the basis of numerical analyses, which simulate the three-dimensional propagation of waves with consideration of the geomechanical and geometrical conditions. In addition to the expected velocities, these analyses also allow the determination of stresses resulting from dynamic loading. If the dynamic stresses are known, the effects of blasting on structures can be predicted. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf bauliche Anlagen werden in der Praxis auf der Grundlage der Maximalamplituden der auftretenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten beurteilt. In der DIN 4150 werden Anhaltswerte angegeben, bei deren Einhaltung Schäden von Gebäuden nicht zu erwarten sind. Die Abschätzung dieser Schwing-geschwindigkeiten erfolgt meist auf der Grundlage von Erfahrungswerten oder empirischer Formeln. Der Vergleich der prognostizierten Werte mit Meßergebnissen zeigt jedoch, daß diese Ansätze insbesondere dann, wenn die Abstände zwischen den Sprengorten und den Gebäuden gering sind, nicht konservativ sind. Zuverlässigere Prognosen sind auf der Grundlage von numerischen Berechnungen möglich, in denen die räumliche Ausbreitung von Erschütterungen unter Berücksichtigung der geomechanischen und geometrischen Verhältnisse simuliert wird. Mit derartigen Berechnungen können die zu erwartenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten und die aus der dynamischen Beanspruchung resultierenden Spannungen ermittelt werden. Dies ermöglicht Aussagen über die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf Bauwerke. RÉSUMÉ: Les conséquences de vibrations résultantes d'explosions pour des bâtiments sont estimés dans la pratique à partir des amplitudes maximales des vitesses d'oscillation. Dans la norme allemande DIN 4150 des valeurs d'orientation sont données, avec l'observation desquelles de dommage à des bâtiments n'est pas à présumer. Ces vitesses d'oscillation sont estimés généralement à partir de valeurs d'expérience ou de formules empiriques. La comparaison des valeurs prédits avec des résultats de mesures montre cependant que ces hypothèses ne sont pas conservateurs, en particulier si les distances entre les lieux de sautage et les bâtiments sont petites. A metalliferous mine has operated at Storys Creek from the 1890s to 1979. Storys Creek drains from a pristine catchment and National Park and remains as the most degraded stream from historic mining in north-eastern Tasmania. It has been the subject of public concern since the closure, particularly at times of high rainfall such as existed in 1985 and 1986. The mine is located on the banks of the creek, which flows into a major river, the South Esk River, which is one of TasmaniaÆs largest rivers and important for recreational fishing and water supplies. For much of the life of the of the operations tailings were directly discharged into the creek, and in latter years stockpiled or very close to it. Little rehabilitation was carried out at mine closure. The result was erosion and subsequent deposition on the banks of the creek downstream. Direct emissions of adit water and the consequential emission of contaminated ground water to the creek continue to affect water quality. Contaminant loads discharging from the mine and tailings comprise 70% of the metal load in the catchment and are by far the largest single source. Acidity data suggested that the introduction of systems to introduce alkalinity could be effective in ameliorating the residual acid drainage impacts in the Storys Creek catchment. After a period of investigations and trials which proved their effectiveness, treatments adopted have included the following: relocation of tailings to a constructed and clay capped disposal area and rehabilitation of tailings area; crushed limestone addition to stream flows; crushed limestone addition to creek banks and exposed tailings; sealing of a drainage Adit; and construction of an anoxic drain to generate alkalinity to surface waters draining to old mine workings. These innovative treatments have resulted in a marked improvement in water quality draining from the area. The anoxic drain is believed to be one of the few, if any, which has been constructed to have generated high levels of alkalinity from clean waters and offers a solution to the clogging problems experienced in such drains in the past. Similarly, the use of crushed limestone in an active stream has proved effective in buffering acid drainage and removing metals from solution.

IN two previous papersl,2 dealing with the carbon-oxygen reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity 0[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm,; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, 0[O] = [O] - 0,00222/[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.' This quantity 0[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to 1.2 per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits 0.015 to 0.025 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state. Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, 0[O], on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in ?[O] level following addition of Spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. VARIABILITY OF EXCESS OXYGEN IN NORMAL OPEN-HEARTH OPERATION The preceding general statements refer to the average value of ?[O] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining oxygen from the gas phase above it, or from added ore, faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of ?[O], the interpretation of which in a single heat may not be immediately obvious, This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig, I, ?[O] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. The bath is now cold, carbon drop is slow, and the first small ore feed causes only a small rise in 0[O]; as the temperature rises and as lime dissolves in the slag, and the bath becomes more active, the

An intrusive body is a mass of igneous rock that has migrated upward, presumably from great depths. Great variations in form, composition and depth of burial occur. It is not proposed in this paper to go into all of the details of the problem. Instead, it mill be assumed here that the intrusive has the form and characteristics represented in Fig. I. According to W. 11. Emmons minerals are not deposited in appreciable quantities below the "dead line." Important amounts of ores of virtually all metals may be found around summit cupolas, but only gold, copper and zinc (in limited quantities) are usually associated with trough cupolas. Most students of ore deposits agree that temperature changes are largely instrumental in precipitating many ores in the "hood" and that the difference in temperature between the intrusive and that of the country rock may be the chief factor in determining the mineralogy of a deposit. A problem then of some interest is to correlate the principal physical features of the intrusive with the phenomena of heat conduction as evidenced by the cooling curves and the isothermal surfaces. Mathematical Theory In order to show the possible application of heat conduction to the interpretation of the processes of metalliferous deposition associated with intrusives, it will be as- sumed that the intrusive is a large par-allelopiped of dimensions, 2l, 2m, 2n. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

It is becoming increasingly common practice to re-use existing foundations for new projects, especially on urban sites where geotechnical conditions are congested. A knowledge of the foundation dimensions and capacity is essential for this to take place, however, as-built records are often non-existent. Non-Destructive evaluation (NDE) is now becoming an important tool in assessing old foundation properties and their potential for re-use. Pile dimensions are also critical in the power industry, when they are supporting transmission towers which need to be upgraded, and may carry additional wind loading. This paper describes the application of various NDE techniques that are available and how they can be used to determine pile length, shape and capacity in difficult site conditions, including foundations under structures.

This paper will highlight the system components of a successful underground mining automation project recently launched at DeBeers Finsch Mine. It will also show that integration of short-term mine planning with other upstream and downstream mining processes in the extraction of kimberlite ore from a block cave is not just critical to the future sustainability of this underground mining operation but also for profitability and cost-effectiveness. This paper will discuss the information data flow required from the mine-planning process through to production for underground block cave mining. The benefits associated with this type of integrated mine planning and automation system will be highlighted.

HEAT Treatment at 1500' F of a mild steel containing 0.1 pct C, in an atmosphere which is oxidizing to both carbon and iron, results in the progressive oxidation of the metal surface with little or no change in the carbon content of the underlying metal. Further heat treatment of the scaled metal in either a neutral atmosphere or in a vacuum may or may not result in the decarburization of the metal depending upon the physical nature of the scale. It is apparent that if a continuous layer of oxide is present on the steel surface, the reaction OScale + Cmetal Cogas cannot progress since the SO formed gas would be unable to leave the oxide/metal interface. Thus, in order for the reaction to progress, the oxide must be cracked or porous. Vacuum heat treatment at 1500" F of samples with a thick continuous oxide scale showed no decarburization of the steel. However, when cracks were introduced mechanically into the scale prior to the vacuum heat treatment notable decarburization of the metal resulted and a structure as shown by Fig. 1 obtained, i.e., reduction of the crack walls to ferrite. With reference to the diagram of Fig. 2, it would appear that a mechanism of the following type takes place. Carbon atoms arriving at an oxide/metal/void interface, such as 'A', Fig. 2(a), can combine with oxygen atoms from the scale and leave the reaction site as Cogas thereby reducing the oxide to metal. On a greatly magnified scale, Fig. 2(b),this will appear as a ferrite projection along the crack wall. Carbon atoms entering this projection can react with oxygen atoms at point 'C', which is a new interface, and so on leading to a progressive growth of the ferrite along the crack wall and to the surface, Figs. 2 (c) and 1. It would appear that the only means by which thickening of the ferrite film can take place is by a diffusion of oxygen through the ferrite film to react with carbon at the newly formed ferrite/ void interface. Since the diffusion rate of carbon is reportedly much greater than that of oxygen, and since there is a low probability factor of oxygen and carbon atoms arriving simultaneously at the same site on the ferritehoid interface, there will be a tendency for more rapid lengthening than thickening of the ferrite layer, as is observed.

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.
