Bulk sulfide concentrate produced from Missouri Pb ore concentrator tailings must be reground to liberate sulfide values for subsequent sepa-ration. Studies to determine grinding parameters for optimum liberation were carried out using optical microscopy coupled with image analysis. The major sulfide phases present in the ground mineral particulates are marca-site, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, siegenite. and bravoite. Results showed that the base metal minerals were liberated by grinding to 74 micrometers (200 mesh), but the siegenite and bravoite required grinding to 20 micrometers or less to achieve liberation. The Federal Bureau of Mines examined tailings samples from 13 western copper operations to determine the potential for recovering rutile. Results showed that six of the samples contained sufficient liberated titania to be considered potential sources. One sample contained 0.75 percent Ti02 or 0.40 percent liberated rutile. Batch flotation studies developed a procedure that recovered 70 percent of the liberated rutile at a grade of 34.7 percent TiO2. Sulfuric acid leaching studies on 12 of the samples dissolved 100 to 2,200 grams Cu per ton of tailings; leaching of the slimes showed slightly more copper was dissolved, 1,800 to 3,300 grams Cu per ton of minus lo-micrometer material. Bulk sulfide flotation of nine of the samples resulted in concentrates that contained 0.38 to 2.0 percent Cu and 0.7 to 2.1 and 6.9 to 42.9 grams per ton Au and Ag, respectively.

Vale Inco?s Coleman Mine 153 Orebody is a narrow vein deposit with a dip that varies from 30 to 70 degrees. It has a strike length of 1200-feet and the current mining extends from the 4250 level to 5100 level. The primary mining method is mechanized cut-and-fill although drift-and-fill is also used in wider sections of the ore zone. The ore body is divided into six main mining horizons with an average of three mining blocks on each cut. There are some interesting rock mechanics challenges related to mining upward from the 4550 level and these challenges are increasing as the mining front progresses toward the 4400 level. The mining of the 4550 block is currently at cut 13 whereby the crown pillar thickness is approximately 60-feet. Significant factors including increased stress levels in the crown pillar, the change in the orebody dip at this level and a recently indentified geological structure in the footwall, have all combined to introduce seismic activity in the footwall of 4550 level. Closer studies revealed a consistent trend of seismicity that was further examined with core logging and Acoustic TeleViewer technology. The data from these assessment tools disclosed a geological structure that is influencing the mining environment. This paper reviews the seismic analysis for the 4550 level mining zone and the subsequent procedures used to locate the new geological structure. The paper also discusses the key mining practices used to successfully mine cut 13 of 4550 level and briefly reviews the studies that are underway to up-date the mine design for continued extraction of high-grade ore in a safe and productive manner.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng.) Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Small and large welded aluminium specimens were tested in fatigue and the results compared with design curves for aluminium in specification BS8118. Metallurgical tests were also performed on the specimens in order to correlate microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The small-scale fatigue test results were in reasonable agreement with results in BS8118, whereas the large-scale fatigue tests showed that BS8118 is conservative.

THE structures formed when austenite is quenched to subcritical temperatures and allowed to transform isothermally have been the subject of intensive study since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Isothermal transformation diagrams summarizing the results of many of these studies have become widely familiar to metallurgists. Of particular interest to metallographers are the dark-etching, acicular products of transformation formed by isothermal reaction below the temperature of maximum velocity of the austenite to pearlite reaction. These products, the bainite structures, can be formed in a wide variety of steels. However, the constitution of bainite is not well understood and divergent views have been expressed as to its mode of formation. In this investigation a combination of dilatometric, microscopic and X-ray methods has been brought to bear upon the problem in the hope of some elucidation of the bainite reaction as it occurs in hypoeutectoid steels. MECHANISM OF BAINITE FORMATION Davenport and Bain1 considered the mechanism of bainite formation to consist of two steps-an allotropic transformation followed by precipitation of carbide. The separation in time of the two processes was considered to be very slight in the upper temperature range and very marked at temperatures just above the martensite range. This concept has been restated by Vilella, Guellich and Bain2 in the form of a definition of the acicular mode of transformation as: The successive, abrupt formation of flat plates of supersaturated ferrite along certain crystallographic planes of the austenite grains; this supersaturated ferrite begins at once to reject carbide particles, (not lamellae), at a rate depending upon temperature. In effect, this is the acicular mode of transformation, even though the temperature be such as to limit the actual life of the quasi-martensite to millionths of a second. The investigation of isothermal decomposition of austenite in certain alloy steels (notably those containing chromium or molybdenum) has revealed that there may be a range of temperatures between the pearlite and bainite reactions in which the austenite decomposes at a relatively low rate.3-6 Further, it is characteristic that in the second region of fast reaction the decomposition of the austenite is incomplete by one reaction but goes to completion by a second reaction. These observations led Wever7 to a description of the bainite reaction as follows: I. The reaction takes place by initial precipitation of a martensitic intermediate structure. 2. In the upper temperature range this structure readily decomposes into ferrite and cementite. In the lower range carbon separates in an unknown form. 3. In the upper temperature range the precipitated carbide nucleates the precipitation

DRILLING CONSIDERATIONS In considering blasting it is necessary to consider the drilling and explosives since one is generally concerned with the total cost of muck of a certain size in the pit or through the crusher. To get a current idea of the drilling situation in open pit mines plotted in Fig. 1 are the drilling costs per ton of material vs. hole diameter for rotary drill holes in large limestone, iron ore and taconite operations. The exception is the 2-in. diam hole which was drilled with a percussion drill in limestone. Each curve in Fig. 1 represents a different operation and the data cover many months of production drilling. The costs are total operating and maintenance and do not include machine depreciation. As the hole size is increased so are the machine size and the investment. Providing the tonnage is available to be drilled, then as the machine size goes up so does the productivity-markedly-and this same shape of curve applies. In some instances it is even steeper. The interesting thing to note is that in each case studied there is a substantial drop-off in cost/ton as the hole size is increased. This is true for the softest material considered, limestone, through to the hardest, taconite. How has this come about? In going from 10-in. to 123-in. diam holes, the powder factors have generally stayed about the same and the same type of muck has been produced. To date this has been mainly in the softer materials but it has also been steadily taking hold in the harder ones. On this basis, then, patterns are generally expanded as the ratio of the hole diameters or close to it, if the explosive type is kept the same. In the harder rocks the cost per foot of hole has increased somewhat so that the overall reduction in drilling cost per ton is about 25 pct. "Sandfire’s DeGrussa Copper-Gold operation in West Australia is a new high grade copper sulfide mine, which includes a 1.5 Mtpa concentrator which was completed in 2013.Early after commissioning, it was identified that the flotation capacity in the all-mechanical cleaner circuit was not sufficient. In order to improve recovery, the tail from the cleaner scavenger was sent back to feed the rougher scavengers. Test-work was done on-site to evaluate the possibility of using a flotation column as a pre-cleaner. A CavTube™ sparging system was selected, which is especially effective for fine ore particle flotation. Test-work was conducted at site using a 150 mm diameter unit, and then confirmed on a 500 mm diameter unit. A 4250 mm diameter full scale unit was installed in Q4 2014 and commissioned in Q1 2015. This unit gave some significant advantages including a reduction in re-grinding requirements, elimination of a circulating load and increase in the recovery of copper in the cleaner circuit and overall circuit.In this presentation, the benefits of columns and cavitation sparging for floating fine particles and rejecting fine entrained gangue will be explained. Also, the results from a lab unit and a pilot unit will be compared against the results of the full-scale unit. The paper will demonstrate the scalability of flotation columns, and which phenomena and scale-up criteria must be considered to be successful. Finally, some general observations will be made about the importance of columns in copper cleaning circuits.IntroductionSandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper-gold concentrator is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of Perth in Western Australia. A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.

"Amorphous carbon thin films doped with nitrogen ( a-C:N) have been synthesized by means of shielded arc ion plating (SAIP). Their electron field emission properties, that is, threshold field strengths for electron emission and maximum emission current densities, were evaluated and compared with those of pure amorphous carbon (a-C) films prepared by the same SAIP apparatus. Among all of the fabricated a-C:N films, the a-C:N films with a N concentration of 23 %, which prepared using Nz arc plasm at a pressure of 1 Pa with applying a sample bias voltage of -100 V, showed the lowest threshold filed of 13.4 V/µm and the highest emission current density of 1.87 µAfcm2 at a field of20 V/µm. These field emission properties of the a-C:N film were much better than those of the a-C films. The best results obtained on the a-C film in this study were the lowest threshold filed of 15.5 V/µm and the highest emission current density of 0.052 µA/cm2 at a field of 20 V /µm. Nitrogen doping to aC was found to be effective for lowering threshold voltage for field emission and for increasing emission current density. The electron field emission characteristics of the a-C:N films depended not only on N concentration but also on chemical bonding state of nitrogen in the a-C:N films. The presence of the ~-C3N4-like phase, which contributes to improve wear resistance of a-C:N as well, distinguished by the NlsXPS peak at 400.5 eV is proved to be crucial in order to enhance field emission properties of a-C:N.IntroductionThere has been much interest in electron field emission from a cold cathode due to its potential applications in vacuum microelectronic devices including field emission displays which are expected as flat panel displays in next generation [l]. It is well known that efficient emission can be rather readily realized using tip-like shape cathodes, e.g., microfabricated three-dimensional electrodes [2], carbon nanotubes [3-5], etc. However, electron emission from planar surfaces is of particular importance since such a type of cathode is· simply fabricated and assembled into microelectronic circuits. Currently, amorphous carbon thin films doped with nitrogen (a-C:N) prepared by plasma processes have attracted attention because their threshold voltages of field emission are relatively low [6]. Among various methods for preparing a-C:N films, the process using arc plasma is of special interest since, in arc plasma, nitrogen is highly activated and new types of carbon nitride phase are expected to be synthesized. However, field emission properties of a-C:N prepared by arc plasma have been studied in less detail compared with that prepared by the other methods such as sputtering."

"The National Safety Competition of 1930, the seventh annual contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to promote safety in the mines and quarries of the United States, has been concluded, and the five winners of the bronze trophies, The Sentinels of Safety,' which are provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine and awarded annually for the most excellent safety records, have been determined by the committee of award. One trophy was awarded to an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, one to a bituminous coal mine in the same State, one to an iron-ore mine in Michigan one to a gypsum mine in Ohio, and one to an iron-ore opencut mine in Michigan.These trophies were awarded to the companies for having the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked by all employees at their mine or quarry. Honorable mention was awarded to each mine or quarry that ranked second, third, fourth, or fifth in its own ground and to all plants that were operated without a lost-time accident during the contest year. Eighty-four out of 337 plants that competed for the trophies were operated without an accident that disabled an employee beyond the day on which the accident occurred.Under the contest rules, all mines and quarries were divided into five groups, four of the groups representing different classes of underground mining operations (anthracite, bituminous coal, metallic ore, and nonmetallic mineral), and the fifth group repre-senting the quarrying or opencut mining of minerals whether metallic or nonmetallic. Twenty-seven mines were included in the anthracite group, 68 in the bituminous group, 52 in the metal group, 24 in the nonmetallic-mine group, and 166 in the quarry and opencut-mine group. The total of 337 mines and quarries was 26 more than the number of plants that completed the contest during the previous year.The committee of award which determined the winners of the contest was composed of seven members, all known throughout the mineral industry but not connected with the United States Bureau of Mines. The committee included W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of Mining and Metallurgy; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association."

The recent combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) can provide considerable insight into the performance of flotation cells. One area of interest from a fundamental equipment design perspective has been the influence of flotation cell size and the inflow rate on the metallurgical performance of the cell. One of the specific design objectives when increasing the size of flotation cells, or increasing the feed flow to the flotation cell, is to ensure that the feed stream flowing into the cell does not have an opportunity to bypass the mechanism. This paper describes the initial modeling efforts to quantify the inter-relationship of cell size, inflow rates, and feed and discharge box placement, on the retention time distribution of solids in the flotation cell, and the fraction of particles that bypass the mechanism on a size by size basis.

Turning matte into anodes continues to be an area to watch: for visitors to see pyrometallurgy in action; for metallurgists to keep up with modern smelting furnaces and ever increasing production rates; for management to remain profitable using more tools than taught in school; and for environmentalists to detect the last small clouds from the ever cleaner smelter. Current converting practices have been screened and analyzed, and today, converting and casting is a modern industry. An impressive, though typical learning curve of converter productivity may be detected. Local conditions such as availability and type of raw materials, products extracted, cost factors, etc., have stimulated the development of add-ons or even alternatives to the still dominant method of converting by Peirce-Smith technology. Turning blister copper into anodes follows a similar path, namely increased productivity and improved quality. We dare to predict that development will continue.

The impact of stockpile oxidation on chalcopyrite was studied through collectorless and collector-induced flotation conditions. In both cases, the Cu grade-recovery performance of stockpiled ore showed relatively poor concentrate grades with respect to that of a fresh sample. However, the oxidation had a minor effect on chalcopyrite recovery itself. The poor concentrate grades resulted from dilution effect primarily by excessive flotation of pyrrhotite. Size-by-size analyses indicated that for the collectorless flotation, the recoveries in the coarse and fine particle-size regions, were higher for fresh ore than for stockpile sample. A greater impact was seen in the coarse size regions for both types of sample, compared to the collector-induced case. The Cu recoveries showed a remarkable increase in the coarse size range for both samples when a collector was used. However, the case for stockpile sample was a marginally higher compared to the fresh sample. This difference has been offset by an opposite trend that was observed between these two samples in the fine size region. It is concluded that in contrast to the case with nickel-bearing sulphides, stockpiling conditions do not show a significant adverse effect on behaviour of chalcopyrite due to its strong floatability, regardless of oxidation.

(A contribution to the study of the conditions of equilibrium of the "free surface" of a water body inclosed in a porous medium.) IN a recent paper, on Geologic Structure in the Cushing Oil and Gas Field, Oklahoma,1 Carl H. Beal has pointed out some interesting peculiarities in the distribution of the hydrocarbons and the disposition of the "planes of separation" between the oil and the water (water surfaces). Mr. Beal's principal statements on this matter may be summarized as follows: I. In every important dome in the Cushing field, which has not been complicated by folding along its sides, the oil area in each, of the three oil and gas sands studied (Layton, Wheeler and Bartlesville) apparently extends farther down on the long axis. of the dome than it does on the steeper sides. The result is that water is encountered at a lesser depth below datum plane (sea level) on the steep sides of the dome than along the ends where the beds are more gently tilted. II. In the Layton and Wheeler sands (to which the detailed study of water surfaces has been almost entirely confined), the water surface is not level, but dips at a gentle angle (maximum dip 100 ft. to the mile) away from the center of the structure. This inclination existed prior to development, and it has been rendered greater by the rapid extraction .of oil and gas. To these statements, the following observations are added. The dominant structural feature in the Cushing field is a broad north and south anticlinal fold, along whose, axis the domes are distributed (Fig. 1, p. 1104), and the more important oil areas in each sand lie on the west side of the field. In many cases, gas has been forced to the east side of the structure, sometimes as far as the water line. From the distribution of the oil and gas bodies, Mr. Beal concludes that the hydrocarbons in this region probably migrated from the west or the northwest.

Evidence has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its ('Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,l-l2 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends— including coals numbered I to 55B, inclusive —which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or 18-in. cylindrical retorts.13 In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from 0.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the 90 coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

THE prospecter and geologist in the field, in the search for gold, are very often faced with a real difficulty. The: mineralized rock _frequently contains gold which is so finely divided or associated with sulphides that it is not recognizable in the gold pan. In recent years, the practice has been to take samples, send them to an assay office, and sit down and wait for results. This paper describes a method of solving the difficulty of proving the presence of this fine gold. The investigation is still in an experimental stage; but certain results have been obtained which would seem to justify publication. We do not consider that the method outlined is quantitative, but we believe that qualitative results are assured. The procedure has the great merit of simplicity. A sample of approximately two pounds of the mineralized rock should be taken and powdered as fine as is practicable. This powder is theo panned and the heavy minerals concentrated. Approximately two grams of these concentrates are taken for the test (one gram can be roughly gauged in the field by heaping up the powder on a Canadian twenty-five cent piece). The material is placed in a test-tube and 6 c.c. of a 10 per cent solution of iodine in alcohol are added (one-third of a test-tube full is approximately equal to 6 c.c.). Heat gently for about ten minutes over a spirit lamp, but without actual boiling. Allow to stand undisturbed until the sediment has settled to the bottom. Remove the clear iodine solution with an eye dropper. Allow it to fall, drop after drop, on a warmed pyrex watch-glass (the drops should be of equal size), taking care that the successive drops fall in the same place and that each drop evaporates before the next drop falls. Heat is applied to the lower side of the watch-glass by means of a spirit lamp. If gold is present in amounts of $2.00 or more per ton, a gold mirror will be formed on the watch-glass. This process of dropping and evaporating should be continued until no clear solution remains. If no mirror has appeared when all the solution has been used, another 6 c.c. of the iodine solution should be added to the powder and the process repeated. The absence of a mirror after the double treatment denotes an amount of gold less than two dollars per ton at the present price, or that the ore contains no gold. The mirror obtained must be washed with nitric acid ( 1: 1) to remove any copper, silver, lead, zinc, and iron. The yellow mirror remaining is pure gold.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.
