Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

During the last few years, a great deal of interest has been aroused in the use of more refined blasting techniques. It has been the effort of many mining companies to reduce powder cost, obtain better rock breakage, reduce drilling costs and provide safer working places. With the advent of new types of powder and such techniques as cushion blasting, line blasting, smoothwall or soundwall blasting, and presplitting or preshearing, these goals are approaching reality. Smoothwall blasting and presplitting have re- ceived much attention at the Climax Molybdenum Co., Climax, Colo., mine because of the large cost factor involved. An experimental program was begun in 1961, and during 1964 to the present has been used in many working areas. Some spectacular results have been achieved by the operating personnel in hard ground, but the most beneficial results have been in areas where the ground has been soft and highly fractured.

We present aspects of one of several ongoing case studies used in the development of prediction techniques for major seismic instabilities. The current investigation centres on accelerated coseismic deformation described by the kinematics of failure and on softening, as well as the characterization of areas of interest by measures of the seismic response at such sites.

Although many research studies had been carried out in the past in order to eliminate environmental issues produced from blasting unfortunately a general approach or formula has not been established yet because of the complexity of the matter. In addition to the wave and ground motion characteristics, the complexity of blasting parameters and site factors restrict the developing of a general criterion. So experimental site-specific studies should be still done in order to predict and control blasting effects.

The CSO 52 Storage Tunnel and Pump Station project consists of 4,700 ft of hard rock tunnel, 2 intakes, and a 4 MGD wet pit pump station. During the geotechnical investigation, it was determined that the host geology contained abundant suldes. The purpose of this paper is to detail the investigation and subsequent determination that acid producing materials would affect the project during construction as well as long-term exposure of tunnel lining and permanent components during the operational life cycle of the tunnel and pump station. Details regarding the interaction between tunnel components and the acid producing material are also provided.

THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.

THE purpose of this paper is to present the data and some interpretation of the results of a laboratory study of the reduction of iron ore and the deposition of carbon from the reducing gas mixtures in such reductions. One major object of the study was to determine the effect of gas pressures on these chemical processes. Effort was made to approximate the conditions of temperature, gas composition, linear and mass gas velocities, pressure range, and extent of reduction prevailing in commercial blast furnaces. The results show that the reduction of Fe203 proceeds by two steps, largely consecutive under the conditions used herein: reduction of Fe203 to FeO, and reduction Of FeO to Fe. Unless the gas has a CO/CO2 ratio greater than 2.1 only the first step occurs under these conditions (850°C) but the following generalizations apply to either step or to the combination. The rate of reduction of relatively fine ore particles at any time is proportional to the mass rate of supply of CO (provided some of it is thermodynamically available) the rate therefore is proportional to the linear velocity at constant pressure, or to the pressure at constant linear velocity. Thus, the rate of reduction may be increased without increase in linear velocity f the reducing gas by increasing the mass velocity of the gas and increasing the pressure correspondingly to avoid any increase in the linear velocity. The rate "constants"-i.e., the efficiency of conversion of the "available" CO supplied-is not actually constant but decreases as the reduction proceeds, and is a function only of the state of the ore; i.e., of the amount of reduction already accomplished and hence of the amount of CO passed. The particle size Of ore used in nearly all the experiments was relatively small (8 to 14-mesh). The rate of reduction in run 16 with 3 to 8-mesh ore particles is within experimental error the same as with the finer ore. Although this would indicate an absence of effect due to particle size in this range of ore particles, it is desirable to have more data on other ore sizes and on ore of different densities before arriving at any generalizations on this point. Although it is possible to extend the analysis of these results to consideration of the more detailed kinetics and mechanism of iron oxide reduction, such extension is beyond the scope of the present paper. From the experiments on carbon deposition, it was evident that if carbon deposition is increased at all by the application of pressures up to 10 psi ga., such increase appears to be less than the experimental and analytical error. Striving to do a better job of ad- ministering the letter and spirit of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Interior Department recently invited criticism-and got it. The criticisms were voiced on July 1 and 2 at the first of a series of public meetings being held by the Office of Hearings and Appeals at the Department's behest. Later meetings, at which all interested parties are invited to comment, are to be announced in the press and the Federal Register. Persons wishing to participate in the meetings should contact the Director, Office of Hearings and Appeals, 1015 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. 22203. At the first Hearing, USBM Director Elburt F. Osborn outlined the progress his agency has made to date in implementing the law on three fronts: enforcement, education and research. Since the Health and Safety Act became law on December 30. 1969, he said, the Bureau's force of inspectors has grown from a mere 300 to almost 1100, while mine inspections have increased from 10,265 in 1970 to 11,021 for the first six months of 1971. On the educational front. Osborn said, the Bureau now has some 60 instructors who have trained about 50,000 miners in safety procedures since March 30. 1971. Classes at the new Federal Mine Safety Academy for both government and industry personnel begin on September 1, 1971. he added. Health and safety re- search, meanwhile, has been allot- ted $20.1 million for the 1971 Fiscal Year. Of this, $8.1 million is assigned to the Bureau and $12.3 million to contracts with universities and private companies. Admittedly, Osborn said, the mine fatality rate is still unacceptable, hut it was lower in the first half of 1971 than ever before---0.73 per million man hours and 0.31 per million tons of coal.

The tectonic and sedimentary environment of the Central North American Rift System (CNARS) provides all excellent setting for major mineral deposits. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending transcurrent fault systems may exercise control over ore forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu. Ni, Co, Ti, Au. Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting. Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale, and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flunking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km (6 miles). The potential, for stratiform or unconformity-related metalliferous deposits must be considered. The rift as a whole remains, however, largely unexplored.

This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater systems in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

The relative merits of treating coal by flotation and spiral concentrators have been examined by tests on run-of-plant fines samples from three seams in the Wittingham coal measures of the Upper Hunter Valley. Flotation of the complete fines was found to be the most metallurgically efficient process with yields substantially superior to those obtained from treatment of only the deslimed fines. A strict comparison between spirals and flotation for the treatment of the deslimed fines was impossible due to differences in product quality. However, the results indicated that the performance of a flotation circuit would be equivalent, and sometimes superior, to that of a spiral circuit.

"Apatite is an important host mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks for production of phosphate fertilizers and phosphoric acid, and a potential source of rare earth elements (REE) production. For dissolution of REEs, sulfuric acid is better leaching reagent to develop the economical viable process for recovering of rare earth elements from apatite ore. However, the efficiency of rare earth elements dissolution in H2SO4 is about 30 % due to the formation of calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate as precipitate. On the other hands, phosphorus is mainly produced from phosphate ore. However, when treating rare earth elements containing phosphate ore, rare earth elements were discharged. Hence, development of novel apatite ore treatment process is required for effective utilization of natural resources. In this study, apatite deposit associated with REE was treated with sulfuric acid leaching and two stage precipitation by oxalic acid (C2H2O4) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for recovering REE and phosphorus, individually. Results showed that it can be seen the vast majority of La (87.5%), Ce (87.3 %), Pr (86.1 %), Nd (85.2 %) and Y (90.9 %) were dissolved in 1 mol/L diluted H2SO4 solution from the apatite ore. As average leaching rate of REE, over 85% of REE were leached by the condition. In the first stage precipitation using the obtained pregnant leach solution from leaching, over 90% of REE was precipitated by oxalic acid addition after controlling pH to 1 by NH4OH solution. After pH changed to 8.5, over 90% of phosphorus was recovered as precipitate by magnesium chloride addition in second stage precipitation"

Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract No. HO395132 to develop and fabricate gas sensors for mining applications. Promising new instruments have been designed, developed, tested and supplied to meet BuMines requirements. These instruments include prototype 1) remote-sensing, diffusion-type CO monitors for mine operation which can be operated in conjunction with a surface computer, 2) control modules for alternate in-mine readout of the remote diffusion type CO monitors, 3) personal CO diffusion-type dosimeters and 4) personal NO diffusion-type dosimeters. In addition, retrofit modifications were made to update and optimize operation of CO and NO2 direct-reading type detectors provided under a previous contract. Studies were conducted to evaluate and demonstrate the availability of stable, portable N02 calibration sources for NO2 instrumentation. The use of selected, commercially available cylinder sources for NO2 instrument calibration were recommended. Additional studies were also conducted to investigate the feasibility of instrumentation for rapidly monitoring CO, NO and NO2 in diesel exhaust.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) implemented the Fe2+/ Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu-electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/ m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40°C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb), compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid milling 5was completely eliminated, and the SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

Current research in the phenomenon of liquefaction has indicated some of the in situ material properties which should be considered in the planning of waste deposits. Practical experience in tailings disposal, however, must be combined with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies to develop the most economical and safe techniques against liquefaction failure. One of the many responsibilities of mining engineers and mill superintendents is providing for the safe and economic disposal of wastes (or tailings) that remain after a mineral has been extracted from an ore. The cost of disposal of these tailings exerts a considerable influence on the minimum grade of ore extracted from the mine. It varies to a great extent with each project and is dependent on many diverse factors, such as the local topographical, meteorological and seismological conditions together with the applicable water pollution laws of the area. The process used to extract a mineral from an ore determines the physical characteristics of the tailings and, thus, is one of the more important factors to be considered in the planning of disposal facilities. Today's trends in ore-processing operations complicate the problems of waste disposal: recently developed extraction methods result in the production of finer tailings, the use of lower grade ores produces greater volumes of wastes, and the enhanced land values in the vicinity of industrial plants preclude the former practice of spreading wastes laterally and force the expansion of waste deposits upwards to greater heights. The frequent occurrence of stability problems in waste deposits indicates that many mining organizations may not be employing current soil mechanics concepts and practices. One of the most spectacular, and often most disastrous, types of tailings dike failure is that resulting from liquefaction of the fine particles combined with a breach of the main retaining dike. TAILINGS DISPOSAL Since the many variations in site conditions, ore bodies and extraction processes dictate the general disposal procedures and mill superintendents incorporate special facilities to provide the most economical disposal method consistent with accepted safety standards, it is only natural that there are almost as many different disposal techniques as there are disposal areas. Methods used in the construction of retaining dikes include: (1) transporting granular material from an adjacent borrow pit and (2) mechanically segregating the total effluent and allowing the coarse fraction to form a retaining dike by hydraulic deposition. The location of a plant and the surrounding topography exert the greatest influence on the layout of tailings disposal facilities. Most of the above-ground waste deposits can be classified as side-hill, (Fig. 1,) cross-valley, (Fig. 2,) or stockpile deposits. Side-hill disposal areas are probably the most common type of layout because of the natural advantage of gravity flow, without the disadvantage of river diversion usually needed for tailings ponds formed behind cross-valley dikes. Stockpiles, which are placed on relatively level ground, require four retaining dikes and the effluent generally has to be pumped up into the disposal area. Changing production techniques or developments adjacent to disposal areas have produced variations or partial combinations of these three categories. Aquifer. A formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient satu rated permeable material to yield significant quan tities of water to wells and springs. Artesian. Synonymous with confined; see ground water, confined. Capillary fringe. The zone immediately above the water table in which all or some of the interstices are filled with water that is under less than atmospheric pressure and that is continuous with the water below the water table. Conceptual model. A conceptualization of a field hydrogeologic framework that facilitates the development of analytical field testing procedures. The results of the test(s) may force changes in the initial conceptual model. Conductivity, hydraulic. Replaces the term "field coefficient of permeability." The volume of water at the existing kinematic viscosity that will move in unit time under a unit hydraulic gradient through a unit area measured at right angles to the direction of flow, if the porous medium is isotropic and the fluid homogeneous. Confining bed. A body of "impermeable" material stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers; its hydraulic conductivity may range from nearly zero to some value distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. Flow, steady. Any point where the magnitude and direction of the specific discharge are constant in time. Flow, uniform. At every point the specific discharge has the same magnitude and direction. Flow, unsteady. At any point the magnitude or direction of the specific discharge changes with time. Fluid potential. The mechanical energy per unit mass of a fluid at any given point in space and time with respect to an arbitrary state and datum; the fluid potential is proportional to the head. Ground water, confined. Ground water under pressure significantly greater than atmospheric; its upper limit is the bottom of a bed of distinctly lower hydraulic conductivity than that of the material in which the confined water occurs. Ground water, perched. Unconfined ground water separated from an underlying body of ground water by an unsaturated zone. Ground water, unconfined. Water in an aquifer that has a water table. Head, static. Height above a standard datum of the surface of a column of water (or other liquid) that can be supported by the static pressure at a given point. Homogeneity. A body of material having considerable lateral extent and comprising a geologic framework for a reasonably distinct hydrogeologic system. Isotropy. Condition in which all significant properties are independent of direction. Porosity. Property of containing interstices or voids; may be expressed quantitatively as the ratio of the volume of its interstices to its total volume. Porosity, effective. Interconnected pore space available for fluid transmission; expressed as a percentage of the total volume occupied by the interconnecting interstices. Potentiometric surface. A surface that represents the static head along a particular specified surface or stratum. Specific retention. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will retain against the pull of gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Specific yield. Ratio of the volume of water that the rock or soil, after being saturated, will yield by gravity to the volume of the rock or soil. Storage, specific. The volume of water released from or taken into storage per unit volume of the porous medium per unit change in head.
