The Dexter pit lake, within the Tuscarora volcanic field in Elko County, Nevada, formed after closure of the Dexter mine. Mineralogy at the Dexter mine is related to widespread feldspar, silica, and chlorite alteration. Major mineralogy includes quartz, alkali feldspar, albite, phlogopite-biotite, hornblende, iron-titanium oxide, chlorite, kaolinite, smectite, illite, and sericite, with lesser amounts of calcite, zircon, apatite, and rutile. Trace element geochemistry is characterized by high levels of As, Ba. Cr, Cu, V, Zn, B, Zr, Li, and U. Detailed mineralogy and geochemistry are required for geochemical models to accurately predict trace element concentrations in pit lake waters.

As surface minable coal is depleted, many operators look to high-wall mining to extend reserve life. Recent advances in highwall mining equipment have greatly improved productivity, clean coal recovery, and attainable penetration beneath the highwall. Somewhat lagging have been systematic design approaches for ensuring web pillar and overall highwall stability. This paper presents an overview of the design, planning, and field performance of a multiple-seam highwall mining application in southwest Wyoming. The safety and efficiency obtained to date is attributable to the careful geotechnical and operational planning described herein. Field confirmation of performance and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

Current research by the US Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/nonmetal mines is described. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, m situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau's research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

You are the reason for a productive and prosperous year for AIME. Superior, good or satisfactory results were experienced in 1978 from almost everything we did as a leading engineering technical society. I recognize and pay tribute to the WAAIME organization. Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

As the quantity of aluminum recovered from shredder scrap continues to increase, together with increased content of aluminum in automobiles, so does the economic incentive to further upgrade shredder scrap. This upgrade will be done by sorting and recovering the aluminum by specific usable alloy compositions. The metal recycling industry infrastructure needed to deal with the increased aluminum scrap supply already exists. It is an inverted pyramid structure that in North America comprises: 3000 scrap collection yards, 200 shredders, a dozen sink-float plants and one heavy metal sorting operation. The technology for upgrading aluminum sorted from shredder scrap is already either in industrial use or in the final stages of pilot plant development. However, the current automotive aluminum recycling infrastructure will need to adjust to deal with higher volumes of the metal from aluminum-intensive vehicles that will be appearing in shredder scrap -20 years from now.

This paper is the second of a series treating the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. In the first paper1 the general problem was outlined and the normal downward changes in metalliferous lodes were briefly stated, with references to earlier papers treating the relations of ores to depths of their formation. The present paper by a number of examples illustrates the relations treated in the first paper. These examples are chosen chiefly from the larger mining districts because their underground developments are more extensive, but the same relations are shown in maps of scores of undeveloped areas in which the main geological conditions are nearly similar. Ecology of Metalliferous Deposits Ore deposits are divided into three groups: 1, Those formed by sedimentary processes; 2, those deposited by meteoric waters; and, 3, those formed in connection with igneous processes. The last group is the most important. It includes the magmatic segregations, which are igneous rocks in the strict sense, and the veins and related deposits, which were formed by precipitation in channels from solutions originating in cooling intrusives. These deposits may be divided into two groups: 1. Those related to intrusives as basic as diorite; and, 2, those related to intrusives more acid than diorite. The second group probably includes more than 95 per cent. of all lode ores. Nearly all of the ores of this group are associated with granitic batholiths or are in positions where it is reasonable to suppose that such a batholith, not yet exposed by erosion, underlies the area containing the deposits. Bureau of Mines laboratory tests show that ilmenite concentrates with titanium dioxide contents as low as 33 wt--pct can be beneficiated to produce a crystalline substitute for natural rutile suitable for direct chlorination. The synthesized product prepared by a three-step procedure was comparable with natural rutile in titanium content. Reduction smelting of ilmenite removes iron as a pig iron byproduct, and the remaining slag phase is greatly enriched in titanium. Oxidation of the slag in the presence of phosphorus¬bearing slag additive converts the titanium-bearing phases to discrete rutile crystals and a glass phase containing most of the associated impurities. Rutile is separated from the glassy impurities by attrition scrubbing ground slag in dilute phosphoric or sulfuric acid solutions. Tests made in a laboratory fluid-bed reactor show that synthetic rutile responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile and that more than 95 pct of the titanium contained in the feedstock was extracted as titanium tetrachloride.

This paper gives a brief summary of theory on radiation waves and describes experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and by the Canadian Geological Survey at the Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. Dr. D. A. Keys, Dr. F. W. Lee and the writer did the experimental work, and Dr. L. V. King some of the theoretical work. In prospecting for orebodies underground it is a usual practice to employ a loop of wire carrying an alternating current that induces an electromotive force in good conductors beneath the earth. The conduc-tars are usually of such low resistance and impedance that currents of considerable magnitude may result in these orebodies or conductors, and these currents in turn induce an electromotive force in a detecting coil placed near the surface of the ground. By using amplifiers it is possible so to enhance the effect of this electromotive force in the detecting coil that the currents in the underground conductors are detected in spite of the powerful effects coming directly to the coil from the primary loop. In such cases distance or depth has primary importance, for the effects have to pass down to the orebody and the secondary effects induced therein have again to pass back through the ground to the observer's detection coil on the surface. However, there is another factor to consider—absorption of the electromagnetic disturbances by the intervening soils and rocks. This absorption will vary with their composition. Thus the main factors that determine the possibility of detecting ore underground are: 1. Its depth beneath the surface, 2. The magnitude of the conducting orebody, 3. The excellence of the conductivity of the orebody as compared with that of the surrounding strata, 4. The frequency of the alternating current,

The computer program. DMC Qistinct Motion &de), which w&s developed for simulating the rock motion associated with blasting, has been used to study the intluence of row delay timing On rock mOtiOn. The munerical simulations correspond with field observations in that vmy short delays (< 5Oms) and vety long delays(> 3oOms) produce a lower percent-cast thao a medium delay (100 to ZOO ms). The DMC predicted relatio&lp between row delay timing and percent-cast is more complex than expected with a dip in the auve where the optimum timing might be expected. More study is required to gain a full undasranding of this phenomenoo.

In 1918 A.S.T.M. held a Symposium on Stress- Corrosion Cracking that was confined entirely to brass, because at that time few people were interested in the phenomenon as it applied to other metals. Again under the stimulus of war, we are gathered to discuss the subject, but this time brass alone is but part of our interest. It is interesting to note more papers on brass will be presented than there were in the 1918 session, but these brass papers, you will also note, comprise less than half our program. Arguably the SMC Test® has become the most popular laboratory hardness test in the world with over 17,000 tests having been completed to date, covering over 650 different ore bodies. It is now routinely used in design, optimisation and orebody profiling projects. The test is unique in that from relatively small amounts of drill core it simultaneously provides parameters that are used in simulation modelling of AG/SAG and crushing circuits as well as work indices that are used in power-based equations for predicting the specific energies of AG/SAG/Crushing and HPGR circuits. The very large data base that has been accumulated has provided the opportunity to study the differences in variability from deposit to deposit. This paper describes and discusses the trends that have become apparent from the study of this data base. Recommendations for appropriate selection of sample numbers are also made which are based on these trends.

The information on viscosity and surface tension of molten slag is indispensable to design new refining procedures in ferrous and non-ferrous processes. For example, the authors have tried to develop "Capillary Refining" to remove impurities in liquid metals by applying capillary absorption of molten slag with those impurities into solid fluxes which have a lot of small capillary tubes. It is necessary to adjust the above physico-chemical properties to adequate conditions on the capillary penetration. In the present paper, we discuss our recent trial to predict surface tension and viscosity of molten slag in multi-component systems. We have derived a thermodynamic model to predict the surface tension of molten slag by using ionic size, molar volume and surface tension of pure components. In addition, we have applied neural network computation to evaluate the viscosity of molten slag. We found good agreement of the calculated results with experimental values of the surface tension as well as the viscosity in various slag systems.

"Deep mixing columns are widely used to support embankments constructed on soft ground area. Researches on the stability of deep mixing columns were done by some authors when the columns do not simultaneously fail but individually fail at different time. A layer of shallow mixing is proposed to reinforce these columns as a group to increase the stability as well as loading capacity of columned improved area. Two centrifuge model tests were done to observe the effect of shallow layer on reducing embankment displacement as well as on failure pressure of improved ground. Acrylic piles were used as deep mixing columns in the centrifuge tests to avoid unexpected internal failure of columns. The results of centrifuge tests were also simulated by 2D FEM to back-analyze the centrifuge experiments. A good agreement between the centrifuge experiments and the numerical simulations shows that by using a shallow layer reinforcing individual columns, the horizontal displacement at the embankment toe reduces by 60 % and the tilting failure is clearly indicated in columns without shallow layer. Although, no significant failure was observed under the current centrifuge condition, the failure pressure of improved ground was significantly increased with the columns reinforced by shallow layer.INTRODUCTIONCement or lime and soil mixing technique was firstly used in Japan and Nordic countries since 1970s. The technique is used to improve soft soil by increasing its mechanical properties including strength and consolidation characteristics (Kitazume and Terashi 2013). Various researches were done to investigate the characteristics of mixing material due to various factors including types of binder, condition of soil, mixing condition and curing condition (Terashi 1997). On the other hand, many studies focused on the application of in-situ mixing technique such as supporting embankment and underground structure as well as working as the foundation of building and factory (Kitazume and Terashi 2013). In term of embankment supporting, column-type improvement is taken into account for huge applications. Due to loading from embankment, the deep mixing columns tend to fail either external failure (Kitazume and Maruyama 2006) or internal failure (Kitazume and Maruyama 2007). However, the deep mixing columns do not fail simultaneously but instead one by one at different time (Kitazume and Maruyama 2007). Because the deep mixing columns work and fail individually, the strength and stiffness of all columns cannot be mobilized simultaneously. By using a shallow mixing layer fixing the top of deep mixing columns, individual columns may work simultaneously. A combined technology of shallow stabilization and floating-type cement treated columns is used to reduce settlement of a high embankment on soft ground (Ishikura et al. 2007). A research on effect of surface improvement layer on internal stability of group column type deep mixing improved ground under embankment load was reported in the Port and Airport Research Institute, Japan (Kitazume 2011). However, the failure pattern of shallow and deep mixing combined structure has not well studied. This research focuses on the external failure mechanism of the combined structure by centrifuge model tests and back-analyzed simulation using 2D finite element method. The effect of shallow layer on embankment displacement and the yield point of the improved ground is also discussed in this study."

Almost all of the flotation reagents used today were discovered by continued application of empirical methods and/or trial and error experimentation. Moreover, with the metal-ion specific approach used so far, it is difficult to separate the minerals containing the same constituent metal ion. A critical assessment of molecular recognition processes involved in biomineralization suggested the possibility of using reagents which are surface specific. The concept that the molecules consisting of two or more functional groups having appropriate spacing between those so as to achieve structural/stereochemical compatibility during interaction with the mineral surface exhibit structure-specificity is thought to be extended to the design of specific collectors in flotation processes. In the present study, for the first time, a rational design of surface active molecules, and thereby the recognition of crystal faces (of minerals) by these molecules through structural and stereochemical matching is being utilized successfully to selectively float various minerals. For this purpose, carboxylate-based collectors (for mineral specific flotation of calcium minerals) as well as xanthate-based collectors (for mineral specific flotation of sulphide minerals) with a fixed alkyl chain length but having two functional groups with varying geometrical distances (separated by a spacer of one, two and three carbon atoms) between them have been synthesized. In this article, we have discussed the design, synthesis, purification of these novel mineral specific collectors as well as their important solution parameters in relation to flotation processes.

A lag apparent in the mining engineering field. While mining will continue as an essential industry, a revitalized profession will be required for national well-being. Specific problems facing the profession include: - a conflict between its design, production and management components, which affect the engineers on a daily basis; - a credibility gap in public matters that is so extreme, government action approaches punitive in degree, and - historical decreases in the number of degree-offering departments in the face of an increasing demand for graduates. A turnaround in these areas could result in attracting into the industry, highly creative, capable, and socially concerned engineers. By improving the quality of undergraduate education, the effectiveness of each entering engineer would be multiplied. This is another way to combat the chronic shortage of trained mining engineers. At the same time, it would set a significant example for other professions in the throes of overspecialization. A revival of the mining profession can be accomplished only during the formative training years of its future practitioners. An educator&apos;s role would be pivotal in this effort.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970&apos;s resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.
