The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

Converting biomass into valuable fuel requires various preprocessing of the raw materials. Biomass densification is one of the conversion processes for its utilization. The aim of densification is to produce biomass pellets, which can withstand regular handling stresses and exhibit high densities with uniform size and shape. Physical properties, such as the particle size distribution after comminution is of highest importance for the binding mechanisms in the pelletisation process. Durability and strength of the pellets play an important role indicating the ability to withstand handling stresses. Particle size distributions of the cereal straws (Rye and Wheat) after specific comminution and liberation processes have been carried out with the help of three different image analysis (Microscope, Camsizer and Fibreshape). The durability of the pellets have been investigated as specified in the standards (ASAE standard S269.4) with a quadratic crate and the strength of the pellets with compression and tension testing machine (Zwick Roell type: ZMART.PRO). The particles size results showed differences in both length and width after different comminution processing. An exact comparison between the particle size analyses with the three different image analyses was not possible. The particle size distribution and the different comminution processes displayed influences on the durability and strength of the produced pellets. The particle size distribution displayed approximately 40 % of fines and 60 % of fibers. The particle size distribution displayed a direct relation to the durability of the pellets. Further durability and strength of the pellets displayed a good correlation.

PRICES of quartz sold in the United States in 1938 ranged from $1.15 to $36,000 a ton. This startling variation was due simply to the differences between glass sand and rock - crystal, materials that are virtually the same in composition. It illustrates the complexities in qualities, uses, and values of industrial minerals. It is generally stated that mineral deposits are exhaustible resources which can never be replaced when depleted. This statement is no longer true with respect to certain industrial minerals now recovered in increasing quantities from that most inexhaustible of all sources of supply, the ocean. Salt has long been obtained from sea water, particularly on the Pacific Coast, and reference was made a year ago to the large bromine recovery plant at Wilmington, N. C. Now the Westvaco Chlorine Products Corp. is operating a large plant at Newark, Calif., having a capacity sufficient to recover daily from the ocean raw materials that will produce 60 tons of various magnesium products. Lime is used to precipitate the magnesia from salt-water bittern. The products are chiefly magnesium carbonate for chemical uses, periclase and other refractories, and oxychloride cement for flooring.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unprecedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by a herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 460,000 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country’s oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the beginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million barrels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but produced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation’s petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil – coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. Since World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum products has become the order of the day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has increased enough to meet domestic requirements by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects – one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the overall daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 60 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields – having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each – must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly, or perhaps more rapidly, than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each were discovered and proved – an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year’s supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the number of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. "Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

For urban underground development involving tieback anchors for excavation support, authorities having jurisdiction typically require tiebacks to be de-tensioned before project completion. This paper updates “A Proactive Approach to Tieback Anchor De-tensioning” (by Peterfreund and Finn, published in the 2017 RETC Proceedings), which discussed a new method employed in a cut-and-cover transit station project. Since publication of that paper, 237 tiebacks were successfully and rapidly detensioned from using a small-diameter drill to cut strands from the surface. To the authors’ knowledge, this was the first intentional large-scale use of a drilling method for this purpose.

Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the particulate component of diesel exhaust, which includes diesel soot and aerosols. When released into the atmosphere, DPM can take the form of individual particles or chain aggregates, with most in the invisible sub-micrometer range of 100 nanometres. The main particulate fraction of diesel exhaust consists of fine particles and because of their small size, inhaled particles may easily penetrate deep into the lungs. The rough surfaces of these particles make it easy for them to bind with other toxins in the environment, thus increasing the hazards of particle inhalation. DPM is a significant health hazard in underground mining operations, where the use of dieselpowered equipment in confined spaces can lead to high levels of exposure among people working in these environments. Classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), DPM has been linked to severe health effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of lung cancer. Effective management of DPM is essential not only for protecting people’s health but also for ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining operational efficiency, and safeguarding the long-term viability of mining companies.

The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2 foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.

Mining activity is increasing in northern boreal and subarctic regions of Canada. This is the case in the far north of Ontario, especially in and near the Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL). De Beers Canada opened the Victor diamond mine in the centre of the HBL in 2008, and advanced exploration and impact assessments are occurring to the west in the ?Ring of Fire? for ferrochrome, nickel/copper, iron/ vanadium and platinum-group elements, making it one of the richest mineral finds in Canada in recent years. However, the HBL is also a near-pristine, sensitive environment. Its peatlands forms the third largest wetland in the world and are globally important stores of terrestrial carbon. Human populations in the region are sparse, consisting almost entirely of First Nations communities. Local First Nations also have a strong land ethic and greatly influence mining developments. Through formal agreements, they have insisted on a gold standard for environmental management, including a small mine footprint and the return to representative native ecosystems after mine closure. However, knowledge on the revegetation of subarctic and northern boreal ecosystems is limited. Here, we are conducting research at the Victor mine to develop gold standard protocols for the revegetation of disturbed peatlands and mine waste uplands and present a summary of results. We first tested existing protocols for peatland restoration from southeastern Canada. We collected peat-forming plants from nearby muskeg, spread them sparsely over disturbed peatlands and applied a light phosphate fertilizer, but unlike southern protocols, no mulch appeared to be required to produce a representative cover of peat-forming plants within three years. A bigger challenge is the reclamation of uplands made of mine waste back to representative ecosystems. We first characterized reference conditions for uplands in the HBL, which are scarce in the region. Nearby natural uplands were divided into two classes, interior uplands and uplands along river valleys. Multiple parameters were examined at these sites including soil development, bulk density, soil chemistry in the rooting horizons, plant cover by stratum, plant species composition and dead wood. The mean condition and, more importantly, the range of these parameters allow us to set broad targets for progressive reclamation, which will facilitate success. Finally, we characterized local upland plant species through their functional traits to determine their likely abilities to colonize, grow and contribute to ecosystem processes. A classification of species by these simple functional attributes will help restoration managers to select candidate species to meet different goals at different successional stages (i.e. good versus poor dispersers or establishers). Research into these protocols remain in the early stages, but show promise that gold standards can be achieved to ensure that mining wastes can be reclaimed to productive ecosystems.

The names of members who have accepted election during January and February, 1907 (new members), are printed in italics. The large number of changes of address since Jan. 1, 1907, shows the importance of publishing these changes as frequently as possible, and the Bi-Monthly Bulletin has been selected as the means to present this information to the members of the Institute. By a simple method of cutting out these names and addresses and pasting them directly over the corresponding names in the annual list of members, the record can be kept practically up to date, and the value of the list correspondingly increased. For this purpose the changes of address have been printed only on one side of the page. The names of new members, being in italics, are readily distinguished from the others, and can be pasted in approximate alphabetical order on the margins of the pages.

The Foothill Tunnel is a remote 16-mile-long untreated drinking water tunnel in the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Hetch Hetchy Water and Power (HHWP) system. The 14-foot horseshoe shaped tunnel, constructed in the 1920s, is lined intermittently with concrete over approximately 53% of its length, with the balance being unlined rock. After detailed planning, in January of 2020 Mott MacDonald and HHWP staff completed a visual inspection and documented the condition of the tunnel with electronic data collection, photographs, and video with audio recording. The result was a comprehensive condition assessment that identified key areas of the tunnel to monitor.

[THE ORGANIC act under which Federal Bureau of Mines was established provided for the investigation of the safe use of electricity in mines. Each Congress appropriates funds for conducting this investigation. As part of this investigation, electrical apparatus used in mines is studied to determine if its operation and use might introduce a hazard. From this study, certain safety standards have been developed. These standards, established with the aid of both the manufacturer and user of such apparatus, are published in schedules, and apparatus that complies with the requirements set forth these schedules is classified as "permissible." This term is defined to designate apparatus as "completely assembled and conforming in every respect with the design formally approved by the Bureau of Mines." In the judgment of the Bureau, the manufacturers of such apparatus have adhered to certain minimum standards of safety in supplying a product that when properly used and maintained is safe for operation in mines where flammable gas or coal dust may accumulate. This work of the Bureau of Mines for increasing safety does not make it obligatory for manufacturers of mine equipment to produce only that of permissible classification. Before the effective date of the Federal Mine Safety Code,5 the Bureau sought to promote safety by recommending that mine operators install permissible equipment in gassy mines as a preventive measure against gas and dust explosions initiated by electrical equipment. For some years, the mining laws of several States have prescribed the conditions under which permissible equipment must be used. The Federal Mine Safety Code requires that ?all new electric face equipment and replacements of equipment purchased for mines where nonpermissible equipment is now being used shall be of a permissible type approved by the United States Bureau of Mines,]

This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

"In 2012 the International Seabed Authority (ISA) established nine “Areas of Particular Environmental Interest” (APEIs) for consideration as future Marine Protected Areas to help preserve the biodiversity of life on the seabed within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) between Baja California, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands. The CCZ is believed to have a high potential for future seabed mining operations. Areas under active exploration contracts in the CCZ, plus the areas currently reserved by the ISA for exploration by developing nations, comprise about 1.9 million km2 of seabed area. The currently designated APEIs consist of more than 1.4 million km2 of seabed. Each APEI includes a central primary conservation area of 200 X 200 km, surrounded by 100-km buffer areas on all sides. The 100-km buffers are intended as a very conservative spacing between the primary conservation area and potential mining activities in adjacent seabed. The selection of these nine 400 X 400 km APEIs, has been criticized as possibly not including sufficient representative habitat similar enough to the potential mining areas (identified currently as the exploration contract and reserved areas administered by the ISA within the region) to ensure protection of the biodiversity that might be impacted by mining.An area to the east of the existing exploration contracts and reserved areas is known to have substantial mineral deposits; it is very similar to the adjacent exploration contract areas in its geology, environmental setting, polymetallic nodule abundance and nodule metal content. Because it is located in the northeastern extreme of the CCZ, this area is also likely to have relatively high densities of benthic life, compared with benthic communities further westward within the CCZ. Many options for the designation of this APEI are possible, but the area designation must accommodate the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and France.This paper discusses why the selected region in the eastern extreme of the CCZ is a good candidate for designation as a new APEI.Keywords: polymetallic nodules, Marine Protected Areas, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Areas of Particular Environmental Interest"

"Each January, tunneling and underground professionals gather in New York City for the George A. Fox Conference. The one-day event offers attendees the opportunity to listen to their peers outline what’s new in the underground construction industry, get updates on major projects in North America and have a chance to catch up of old friends.The conference is put on by the Underground Construction Association of SME. This latest conference attracted about 370 specialists in the industry. The theme for this year’s event was “Water Tunnels, Past, Present and Future.”The technical session included talks focused on major tunneling projects, including the massive California Water Fix program and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) Metropolitan tunnel redundance program in Boston. The conference also included an update on the Gateway Project from Phil Rice from WSP and Mahammed Nasim of Amtrak as well as a Tunnel Industry update.The following is a sample of a few of the presentations. Technical presentationsDEP’s Tunneling Program Evolution. James Mueller is the agency chief engineer of New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Its mission is to plan sustainable infrastructure investments for the future of clean water and the environment in the city and its watersheds, he said. The agency’s goals are to synthesize information across bureaus within DEP to allow data-driven decision-making. It is also to optimize internal agency processes and systems related to the implmenation of engineering programs within a structured assessment process. The agency also prioritizes projects and funding within a structured integrated planning process. And it standardizes project performance and delivery to meet the needs of the agency in alignment with industry standards and market capabilities."
