Em um processo de sinterização, a velocidade da máquina de sínter deve ser controlada, com o intuito de garantir que o ponto final de queima da camada a sinterizar esteja dentro de uma faixa que possibilitará elevada produtividade. Este artigo apresenta um modelo físico que descreve o movimento da frente de queima da camada ao longo do leito e o controle de velocidade implantado no sistema de automação de nível 2 da Sinterização da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. O controle de velocidade foi proposto para manter o ponto final de queima em torno do valor do setpoint escolhido. Ao longo dos anos, as condições operacionais da planta de sinterização mudaram em razão da variação da qualidade dos minérios que compõem a mistura. Nesse contexto, o controle foi avaliado e apresentou resultados satisfatórios, permitindo à operação uma forma de controlar o processo sem adicionar atrasos relacionados à tomada de decisão.

Nos dias contemporâneos, houve uma evolução do armamento utilizado e há uma tentativa dos centros de defesa e balística de acompanhar essa evolução no desenvolvimento de blindagens cada vez mais eficientes. Essa eficiência passa tanto na leveza do material quanto na sua capacidade de proteção. Vivemos também nos dias atuais uma preocupação com questões ambientais e energéticas e é justamente, envolto nesse cenário que pesquisas relacionadas à utilização de fibras naturais (FNL’S), tem se tornado cada vez mais relevantes. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de sisal, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico de munição com calibre de 7,62 mm. Neste trabalho foram testados compósitos reforçados com 20% e 30% em volume de fibras de sisal. Com um auxílio de um radar Doppler, foram registradas as velocidades inicial (de impacto) e residual (após a perfuração do impacto). De posse desses dados foi possível calcular à energia cinética absorvida pelo compósito e estimar à velocidade limite do projétil que essa blindagem é capaz de suportar. Os resultados após alguns tratamentos estatísticos demonstraram que o compósito em questão tem resultados similares à outras blindagens reforçadas com FNL’S, representando mais uma opção de blindagem moderna.

Much practical experience has been gathered in the last 30 years of application of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) integrated with ball milling in size reduction of fine iron ore concentrates. The company Vale S.A, in Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil), was one of the pioneers applying the technology prior to pelletisation with an outstanding size reduction energy efficiency in the circuit and a significant increment in the specific surface area of the product. Recent studies by the authors demonstrated benefits of modelling and simulation to improve the performance of HPGRs in this particular application, with the model being able to describe HPGR performance under different operating conditions and under variations of feed size distribution. Despite these important advances, this modelling approach has only been used offline and under steady-state conditions. The present work applies the modified Torres and Casali model proposed by the authors in pseudodynamic simulations. The ability of the model to predict the characteristics of the product in real-time is evaluated using data available online for the pellet feed preparation circuit. Results demonstrated the model capabilities to map the physical operation and give a realistic representation of the process. Additionally, the model is demonstrated to be able to support the pellet feed production by providing extended real-time information of the process, making it a useful tool for improvement of the operational strategies and process stability.

Includes a review of the state-of-the-art of explosives loading in the crushed stone and cement industries of South Florida and the development of a field test program for alternatives. Emphasis is on the loading of small diameter (2 1/4" or less) explosives. Test results ire evaluated for operational and economic feasibility. Details are described of an explosives loading method which involves placing cardboard tubes with external couplings through the hollow drill steel and then Loading explosives into the tube casings after the drill rig has moved off. This method eliminates the hazards peculiar to loading explosives Through the kelly bar. The alternative method can be performed by existing drill rigs with or without minor modification. With modification, improvement in yield per blasthole and/or primary crushing rate provides opportunity so offset some or all of the additional cost.

ANNUAL meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers convened on Tuesday morn-ing, Feb. 20, the president, Mrs. H. W. Hardinge, presiding. President Hardinge, in opening the meet-ing, said: "I have the honor and great pleasure to welcome you to our seventh annual meeting. It has been a happy year, though I started in fear and trembling. My fear is partly gone and my trembling becomes less as time goes on. Never has a chairman had such splendid cooperation and harmony in her work; no. matter how much was asked nor what the task, I have always received the same answer, `We are with you, of course we can do it.' Often the road has been untried and the way full of snares, but we have all pulled together. Is it any wonder we have had a prosperous year? I cannot thank the governing -board and officers enough for their help." Mrs. Hardinge described her trip through the West last summer, during which she visited many of the local sections of the Auxiliary. She also spoke of the work of the Rossiter Raymond memorial library which has been started as an activity of the Woman's Auxiliary. Mrs. Reynders read the minutes of the last annual meeting, and Mrs. Kemp read the treasurer's report. The latter showed that on Feb. 1, 1922, there was a bank balance of $683.61 and on Feb. 10, 1923, the bal-ance was $947.93. Mrs. Westervelt expressed the sorrow of the Auxiliary for the death -of Mrs. Florence Howe Hall and of Mrs. Levi P. Holbrook.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specificetiona that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, end that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3/ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered 1s a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

"There are a variety of methods suitable to analyse elemental and mineralogical contents of rock drill core samples. Current demands are on fast exploration and objective analysis of ore samples. This paper proposes a combination of Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and image processing, entitled LIF-imaging, as a potential method for automated mineral analysis of the drill core samples. It is shown that LIF-imaging can produce a mineral map of the fluorescent minerals existing on the surface of the drill core samples. The test cases are drill core samples from a Ni-Cu mine situated in Kevitsa, Finland. The main prerequisite of LIF-imaging technique is a reference data, linking colours to the minerals. This study describes the calibration of LIF-imaging technique using precise but slow Raman spectroscopy. Using regularized logistic regression, a model is obtained that classifies the minerals based on their emitted fluorescent colours in the digital images. The abundance of each mineral group is estimated by pixel counting. The results are compared with X-Ray Diffraction laboratory assays performed on the same samples. The results show that the interpretation of the fluorescent minerals through LIF images corresponds to the XRD results. Furthermore, the utilization of the logistic regression to interpret the existing fluorescent minerals greatly improves the technique."

The inter-relationship between these parties and the effect on the outcome of the project is often grossly underestimated. There are numerous success stories where the parties have worked as complementary teams aiming at the best outcome for the client company and achieving significant success. While there are a good number of occurrences where either the roles of the parties were unclear or perceived to be different from what others in the team believed or required them to be and the results were less than desired. This usually resulted in ongoing conflict, incorrect focus, working to different agendas and the result being a less than optimum result to Client Company. Mining, by its very nature of exploring where you cannot see, be it a shaft being sunk, tunnel being developed or other excavation that needs to be made, requires a very special working relationship between the parties. To understand this, and it applies equally well to mine and plant construction and other multiple function projects, one needs to start by describing the relationship of the parties. Often people believe that because they manage ongoing complex operations and large numbers of people that they can manage projects and as such the participants will ?fall into line.? At the outset it needs to be stressed that ?Project Management? is a specific type of management and needs to be understood as such. There are enough Colleges and Universities that teach project management, not only as a subject but also as a Master Degree. As you start up your project the relationship you establish between the client, project team (C.P.T) and the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management team (EPCM) will largely determine how successful your project will be. It is essential that from the outset a spirit of co-operation, support and respect be nurtured, and that it be actively carried through the project life cycle. There are several methods to facilitate this including team building exercises right at the start. This time and money will be well spent and recouped many times over during the project life cycle.

A mass and energy balance for a modern electric arc furnace ("EAF") indicates that about 70% of the process energy losses are contained in the off-gas as chemical energy in the form of uncombusted CO and H2 and as thermal energy. Given the magnitude of the off-gas energy losses, improved EAF energy efficiency needs to focus first on controlling furnace practice to maximize "in-EAF" energy utilization and second, on recovering residual energy in the off-gas existing in the fume system. This paper focuses on the application of off-gas analyzers, sensors and process models to control and optimize "in-EAF" energy utilization efficiency. The paper will also discuss the application of heat recovery technology to EAF steelmaking.

Many injuries are caused each year by rock falls in coal mines. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Various surface controls are used in mines to control this surface rock. One that has been found to be very effective is roof screening. Depending on the size of the screen, roof coverage approaching 100%can be achieved. Many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of additional costs of time and materials, but others are having great success at both controlling costs and surface rock. Data is presented from two mines that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to innovations in roof bolting machines. Four case studies of roof screen experience are presented along with associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper will provide information about features of different roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. "INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

THE first session was held in the small hall of the Academy of Music, on Tuesday evening, February 18th, 1879. The proceedings were opened by the reading, by President Eckley B. Coxe, of the following Address : SECONDARY TECHNICAL EDUCATION. Technical education is a subject to which both the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers have of late years given much attention, and deservedly so. We all remember the admirable address of our former President, Mr. Holley, at the Washington meeting, upon this subject, and the very interesting reunion of the two societies in Philadelphia for its discussion. The problem to the solution of which the meeting devoted its attention was, "Shall the practical education of the engineer in the mine, in the rolling-mill, in the workshop, or in the field, precede, be contemporaneous with, or follow his theoretical studies in the technical school ?" I do not propose to add anything to what was so admirably said by so many of our leading engineers on that occasion ; but I shall ask your attention to another question in technical education, which seems to me equally worthy of our consideration, and which, I am sorry to say, has as yet attracted but little attention in this country. It is, "Shall the apprentices (I call them so for the want of a better general name), who are growing up and learning their trades in and around our mines and works, and from whose ranks the master mechanics and foremen of the future must be taken-shall they be provided with some means of obtaining as much theoretical training as may be necessary to enable them properly to understand the various processes and operations that they may be called upon to superintend, and not be obliged to pick up, as best they may, here a little and there a little truth mingled with much error?" In the former case, those who have the ability and industry to avail themselves of the advantages that should be offered to them would fit themselves to become real foremen, men who would understand and appreciate the true engineer and his methods. Nanopartículas magnéticas são amplamente empregadas em diversas áreas devido as suas propriedades superparamagnéticas, e vem sendo estudadas por todo o mundo com potencial em campos como biomedicina e tratamento de efluentes. Nesse experimento as propriedades de ferritas mistas de manganês e zinco foram testadas e avaliadas com base na sua concentração de zinco em cada composto, usando como fator de comparação suas velocidades médias de arraste em um tanque de ondas graduado na presença de um campo magnético externo. O processo procura viabilizar um método de análise que sugira possível coerência com resultados observados em outro método de caracterização magnética, a magnetometria por amostra vibrante. Tais resultados apresentaram maior magnetização de saturação para as amostras de Mn0,5Zn0,5Fe2O4 assim como foi observado maior velocidade de arraste nas amostras de mesma estequiometria.

In the last fifteen years, several research studies have evaluated the ability to detect various types of deep foundation concrete integrity flaws with crosshole sonic logging (CSL) and thermal integrity profiling (TIP). This paper synthesizes the findings from the research, focusing on two studies that included CSL and TIP testing of drilled shafts with various types of flaws. The first, a 2016 research study of test shafts for the Wisconsin DOT, included inclusions inside and outside the reinforcing cage, intentional tremie withdrawal during concreting, and soft bottom flaws. The second, a 2021 study of production shafts for the Missouri DOT, included one shaft with and another without soft bottom conditions. After synthesizing the ability of each test method to detect each type of flaw, the paper presents recommendations for improving how CSL and TIP results are evaluated in practice. The recommendations highlight DFI‟s CSL interpretation protocol as well as the importance of evaluating TIP data versus time, not just depth. The paper includes example temperature-versus-time plots for various types of flaws and emphasizes how temperature-versus-time evaluation can be used to distinguish soft bottom conditions from standard bottom-of-shaft temperature roll off.

Os convertedores BOF, em função das condições operacionais e mesmo de sua localização, sofrem variações de parâmetros cujos seus efeitos sobre o metal líquido nem sempre são considerados. O presente trabalho investigou dois aspectos: a pressão ambiente no interior do convertedor e a temperatura do oxigênio no reservatório estagnante. Os resultados mostram que a temperatura de oxigênio apesar de alterar as propriedades de saída desse gás tem pouca influência na penetração de jato. Já a pressão ambiente do BOF tem grande influência na penetração de jato, e leva um dilema nos dimensionais de bocais de lança relativo aos jatos subexpandidos e sobrexpandidos.

Evaporation mechanism of S from liquid Fe–C–S alloys at 1873 K was proposed by analyzing available experimental data. It has been known that increasing C content in liquid alloy increases activity coefficient of S ðfSÞ, and it could raise driving force for the evaporation reaction S = S(g). However, experimental data of the evaporation of S in the Fe–C–S alloys could not be accounted for only by considering the increases of fS. In the present study, formation of carbosulfides, CS(g) and CS2(g), was additionally taken into account in order to explain role of C for the accelerated S evaporation. Surface adsorption of S was also taken into account, which retards the evaporation rate of S. An evaporation model equation was formulated. It can be applied to calculate the evaporation rate of S over wider C content (from zero to its saturation to liquid alloy).

Los excesivos niveles de selenio son capaces de producir trastornos de desarrollo para la vida acuática. Por tanto, es difícil eliminarlo mediante los métodos convencionales de tratamiento físico/químico en los emplazamientos mineros, tales como plantas de tratamiento de precipitación química. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el tratamiento biológico del selenio como el método adecuado que permite una descarga mínima de selenio total de 4.1 microgramos por litro (µg) en el efluente minero. Así también se describe el programa, presupuesto y costo del proyecto diseño- construcción.
