"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. The use of piezoelectric semiconducting materials for the fahrication of ultrasonic transducers has raised the upper fundamental frequency limit for transducers from about 200 mc to above 10 kmc, Several types of semiconductor transducer configurations have been proposed and examined experimentally. Depletion-layer transducers have been made and operated at frequencies below 1 kmc hut they appear to he better suited for operation at considerably higher frequencies around 10 knzc. Diffusion-layer transducers have been made and operated in the range 50 to 1000 mc and have exhihited considerably improved conversion losses and bandwidths compared with other transducers available in the frequency range. A variety of novel structures are possible using these new types of transducers, some of which could lead to substantial advances both in research and in the fabrication of ultrasonic delay lines and memory elements. THE field of ultrasonics today spans some five decades of the frequency spectrum from the audible to the kmc range and finds applications ranging from fundamental research into the atomic structure of matter to the degreasing of machine parts. To cover this wide range it has been necessary to develop a great many types of ultrasonic trandsucers utilizing a variety of materials and physical phenomena. The first ultrasonic transducers were made during World War I for a submarine-detection system. They consisted of plates of single-crystal quartz bonded between metal plates and were one of the first applications of the phenomenon of piezoelectricity discovered nearly 30 years previously. Despite the many advances which have been made in transducer technology, piezoelectric transducers using single-crystal quartz are still used almost exclusively for application above about 30 mc. Transducers at these frequencies are normally made in the form of thin quartz plates which are then bonded onto the medium in which the ultrasonic wave is to be propagated. The crystallographic orientation and geometry of these plates determines the type of wave generated and the way in which the efficiency of the electromechanical conversion varies with frequency. Analysis of the design parameters shows1 that the frequency of maximum efficiency (the fundamental or resonant frequency) is that frequency at which the transducer is approximately half the wavelength of the ultrasonic wave in the material. As the frequency increases, the ultrasonic wavelength, and therefore the optimum transducer thickness, decreases and in practice the fabrication of quartz transducers with fundamental freauencies above 100 mc becomes extremely difficult due to the extreme thinness required. For frequencies above 100 mc quartz transducers can be used in overtone-mode operation, and for very high frequencies (500 to 24,000 me) a technique using a quartz rod inserted in a high-Q microwave cavity4 is available. These techniques, however, exhibit comparatively low fractional bandwidths and rather poor conversion efficiencies. The present trend in ultrasonics is towards high frequencies and greater bandwidth to allow the use of shorter pulses which can give increased discrimination in radar-system delay lines and greater storage capacity in computer applications. "The influence mechanism of chlorite on the flotation of pyrrhotite was investigated through flotation tests, Zeta potential measurements, optical microscope photos, solution ion measurements and absorption measurements. It is observed that, the addition of chlorite influences the flotation of pyrrhotite seriously. The IEP (isoelectric point) of pyrrhotite and chlorite is 7.6 and 4.3 respectively, in the condition of slight alkalinity, both pyrrhotite and chlorite are negatively charged, and the hetero-aggregation will not occur. With the existence of oxygen in solution, the iron ions are dissolved from pyrrhotite surface because of the oxidation of pyrrhotite during pulp conditioning. The dissolved iron ions adsorb onto the surface of chlorite in the forms of iron hydroxyl and iron hydroxide, and the adsorption results in the opposite charge of chlorite surface. As a result, the hetero-aggregation between pyrrhotite and chlorite occurs. The adsorption of chlorite changes the surface property of pyrrhotite and restricts the adsorption of amyl xanthate onto pyrrhotite surface, and then decreases the flotability of pyrrhotite.INTRODUCTIONIn sulfide ores processing, magnesium silicate bearing gangue minerals often report to the concentrate causing downstream processing problems as well as increased smelting costs. Talc,chlorite and serpentine are gangue minerals commonly encountered in complex sulfide ores (Engel, Middlebrook, & Jameson, 1997; Pietrobon et al., 1997; Witney & Yan, 1997; Chen, Grano, Sobieraj, & Ralston, 1999a, 1999b; Bremmell, Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005; Senior & Thomas, 2005; Wang, Somasundaran, & Nagaraj, 2005; WieseHarris & Bradshaw, 2007). All of them are characterized with uniform crystal structures consisting of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and magnesium-oxygen octahedron. The magnesium-oxygen octahedron layers are broken during the liberation of serpentine to expose the magnesium-oxygen bonds with strong ionicity and hydration, which results in natural hydrophilicity of serpentine. In water, the hydroxyl on serpentine surface ruptures and dissolves into the aqueous phase while the Mg2+ remains, resulting in surface positive charge (Tao, 2012). As serpentine has a positive potential at alkaline condition, it is therefore likely that it will attach through electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged mineral surface and reduce both the flotation rate and recovery of target minerals (Lu et al., 2011). For talc, characterized as good natural hydrophobicity, the liberation comes from the interlaminar fracture to remain molecular bonds on surface with weak hydration. Being naturally hydrophobic, talc easily reports to flotation concentrates, thus reducing concentrate grade (Shortridge, Harris, Bradshaw, & Koopal, 2000; Beattie, Huynh, Kaggwa, & Ralston, 2006). Meanwhile, both molecular bonds and magnesium-oxygen bonds are exposed on chlorite surface when liberation occurs, resulting in moderate natural hydrophobicity between serpentine and talc (Tao, 2012). And thus the mechanisms of influence of chlorite on sulfide ores are more difficult to study."

O aço inoxidável austenítico 316 (316 SS) é um dos materiais metálicos mais utilizados em aplicações médicas devido à combinação de propriedades mecânicas e do baixo custo. No entanto, desgaste e corrosão estimulam mudanças permanentes no tecido humano que podem levar à perda do implante. O desenvolvimento de recobrimentos biocompatíveis e estáveis, que apresentem propriedades mecânicas adequadas, e que não sofram ruptura ou delaminação durante o uso, é uma solução muito promissora para melhorar o desempenho do 316 SS como biomaterial para implantes. Neste trabalho, uma liga intermetálica FeAlCr, que tem apresentado propriedades adequadas para a aplicação como biomaterial, foi utilizada como recobrimento sobre um aço inoxidável 316 de grau médico. O revestimento foi obtido utilizando-se a técnica magnetron sputtering por corrente contínua. Os parâmetros de deposição, como distância substrato - alvo e pressão de gás argônio foram mantidos fixos em 50 mm e 5 mTorr, respectivamente. As amostras foram preparadas com os seguintes valores de potência de sputtering: 50 W, 75W, 100 W e 150 W. A adesão dos filmes foi analisada por teste de scratch, enquanto a espessura e a taxa de deposição foram analisadas por perfilometria ótica. As características estruturais foram analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura com EDS.

INTRODUCTION Environmental and occupational safety and health requirements often have a major impact on the design of comminution circuits, leading to increased capital and operating costs and reduced income. A project's capital cost can be increased by environmental permitting delays and the addition of dust collection equipment. Income can be reduced by lost production during unscheduled plant shutdowns for dust collection equipment maintenance. Dust collection equipment must be carefully selected and sized to minimize impact on the project. The equipment performance must comply with environmental regulations and allow working areas to comply with occupational safety and health regulations. Unnecessary overdesign could jeopardize the project's desirability from an economic standpoint. The equipment must be sufficiently reliable to avoid interference with production schedules. This chapter provides practical information on the selection and sizing of comminution circuit dust collection equipment that is consistent with the requirements stated above. It presents information on the reasons and general principles of dust collection; various types of dust collection equipment; and design criteria for ventilation hoods, duct systems, fabric filter dust collectors, and fans. An example discussing the selection and sizing of dust collection equipment for a simple comminution circuit is also presented. REASONS FOR DUST COLLECTION Dust collection equipment should be installed in comminution circuits for a variety of reasons, some of which are discussed below. These include compliance with government regulations, minimization of housekeeping requirements, product recovery, and improvement in public and employee relations. Compliance with Government Regulations Dust emissions from comminution circuits must comply with both air pollution control and occupational safety and health regulations. The regulations that may influence the selection of comminution circuits are discussed in more detail in Chapter 2. Air pollution control regulations limit the emission of dust, as well as visible emissions to the atmosphere and the concentration of dust in the ambient air. Improve surface mine haul-age truck safety and efficiency by providing a means for sensing the weight and distribution of the truck's load. Approach The safety hazards and the economic implications of overloading mine-haulage trucks were analyzed to determine the net effect of that practice on mine operations. The analysis indicated that: Ten to 25 pct overloading is typical; Higher haulage, tire, and maintenance costs occur due to overloading (a 20 pct overload was estimated to increase operating costs 7 pct per ton); Ten to 15 pct of haulage? truck injuries and fatalities are attributable to overload conditions, at a cost over one million dollars per year to the mining industry. Vehicle-weighing technology that conformed to the performance specification for an off-highway haulage truck overload detection system was selected for in-mine testing. How It Works Normally, volumetric estimates are made during the loading sequence which do not account for the varying ore density. Hence, the actual weight of a load is never precisely known. By providing a precise measurement, an overload detection system will not only indicate vehicle overloading, but will also show under-utilization of the truck. One system tested by the Bureau of Mines was the ?Load Analyzer" manufactured by Pactronics Corporation in California. This system consists of a meter-type analog readout for the cab console and three "Electrosensors" (linear variable differential transformers) attached to the main frame. Using conventional welding and brazing techniques, two sensors are attached between the front members of the engine sub-frame and the top of the left and right trailing arms (one sensor per arm). The same techniques are used to attach the third sensor to the rear centerline of the truck. between the main frame cross member and the A-frame. The readout unit on the cab console indicates by color-coding whether each sensor loading is under (green), at (yellow), or over (red) the pre-set rated load. The three-sensor configuration with in-dependent readouts also detects uneven distribution of the load.

Synthetic minerals were made from pure starting materials and galena samples were doped with the title metals. Microscopic, microprobe and X-ray examination confirmed that the dopeants were in solid solution. Paired flotations in a Hallimond-tube apparatus were performed to determine relative flotation response using Aerofloat 238 promoter. Results of these tests show that silver-doped galena floats more readily than pure galena and that galena doped with bismuth floats less readily than pure mineral to a 95% confidence level. Galena doped with both silver and antimony as AgSbS2 shows no detectable effect. Antimony-doped galena followed the expected trend, but not to 95% confidence. The results are consistent with the theory that flotation by thiol-type anionic collectors is enhanced by p-type semiconduction.

Effect of applied DC potentials on the bioleaching of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is discussed. Copper dissolution was the highest at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE), while all the dissolved copper got cathodically deposited at a negative potential of -600mV (SCE). Electrobioleaching at an applied potential of +600mV (SCE) was established at different pulp densities as a function of time. Effect of the magnitude of electrolytic currents on the activity and growth of bacterial cells was studied. Preadaptation of bacterial cells to the concentrate slurry and electrolytic growth conditions significantly enhanced copper dissolution. Electrochemical and biochemical mechanisms involved in electrobioleaching are illustrated with respect to oxidative dissolution and bio catalysis of anodic oxidation.

In 2004, Boliden Odda underwent an extensive modernisation project targeting mainly the leaching section of the plant. Direct leach technology was introduced as part of this project. The Direct Leach process, developed by Outokumpu, is an atmospheric oxidative leach of zinc sulphide concentrate. The effects of this new processing operation on behaviour of iron in the plant are discussed. As well, the filterability of the new residue on belt filters prior to its deposition in mountain caverns is also discussed. The solids from the direct leach process have been analysed by scanning electron microscopy, and the results of these analyses are presented.

By means of the long-term aging treated, creep properties measuring and microstructure observation, an investigation has been made into the microstructure and creep behavior of the casting and rolling GH4169 superalloy after long-term aged. Results show that, after the casting and rolling GH4169 superalloy treated by long-term aged, significant amount of " phase are dispersedly precipitated within the grains of the alloy, and some of the NbC, Cr7C3 carbide are distributed along the grain boundaries. In the range of the applied stresses and temperatures, the creep activation energies and stress exponents of LTA GH4169 alloy during steady state creep are calculated to be Q=541.1kJ/mol and n=16.2, respectively. During creep, the deformation mechanism of LTA GH4169 is thought to be the twinning and dislocation slipping within the twinning regions, and the damaging mode of the alloy is the intergranular fracture, and the non-smooth crystal surface is displayed in the fracture regions of the alloy. Thereinto, the carbides film formed along the grain boundaies has a few effect on the strength between the boundaries, which is a main reason of resulting in the alloy possessing a longer creep lifetimes.

"As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. In December of 2009 an estimated one million ton slope failure activated a 10 million ton mass impacting use of the main ramp system in the Newmont Gold Quarry pit. The failure left behind a 400 foot (122 meters), vertical to sub vertical scarp feature and shut down production in the lower benches of the pit.

IN THE Southwestern copper region the event of greatest interest was the starting up of the new Hurley, N. Mex., smelter of the Chino Mines division of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Corp., which occurred in May. This plant, built as a wet-charge smelter for treating largely an all-concentrate charge, embodies in its de- sign the latest in materials-handling equipment. Noticeable around this smelter is the absence of tram cars and trackage for the handling of charge, dust and other materials. Concentrate from the mills is received in bottom- dump cars which are unloaded into a series of concentrate bins. Concentrate is then reclaimed through the bottom of the bins and discharged through a feeder on to a conveyor belt. Flux for the charge is fed on to the conveyor ahead of the concentrate charge. The belt-mixed charge is conveyed to the furnace building and discharged into the furnace charge bin ready for feeding to the reverberatory furnace. As in the McGill plant, the furnace is fed by vibrating conveyors, one down each side of the furnace.

Silicon Valley Clean Water signed a progressive-design-build (PDB) contract with Barnard Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) to design and construct the Gravity Pipeline tunnel in Redwood City, CA. Owner and Design-Builder teamed with designer Arup to provide a final product: 3.3 miles of 182 in. O.D. precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel with 10 ft. and 11 ft. I.D. Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) carrier pipe, complete with two FRPM Drop Structures. BBJV and Arup collaborated with SVCW to evaluate alternative design concepts, negotiate an agreeable price and reduce contingencies through a transparent estimating process, and deliver the project ahead of schedule.

The new copper processing plant of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex consists of two parallel circuits. After a primary crushing, the ore is sent to a SAG mill and the product is further ground in a ball mill. The overflow of the hydrocyclones is fed to a flotation circuit which contains 8 rougher tank cells (RCS130), 3 cleaner cells (RCS50), 5 scavenger cells (RCS50) and a 4 x 12 m flotation column as recleaner. The circuit was initially designed to process a feed containing 0.8% Cu, but because of the ore type change, the feed grade decreased to 0.6% Cu. This resulted in a reduction of final concentrate grade and recovery from 28 and 85.5% to 24 and 84.4%, respectively. Based on the original design, the copper and silica recovery in the cleaner cells should be 69 and 55%, respectively, but these values increased to 85 and 75% because of a higher retention time. The rather high silica recovery (i.e., 75%) was found to be the main source of the lower final concentrate grade. In order to reduce the retention time of particles in the cleaner cell from 13.7 to 6.9 min, the rougher concentrates of two parallel circuits were fed to only one cleaner-scavenger and regrind circuit. This modification increased the cleaner and final concentrate grade from 15.1 and 24.5% to 17 and 26%, respectively. To prevent a possible reduction in the copper recovery, the froth depth in the scavenger cells was reduced. The overall outcome of the circuit modification was evaluated to be a 10% reduction in the energy consumption without any loss in the overall copper recovery.

In the past 40 years substantial changes have occurred in flotation machines. This has included increases in mechanical cell size to 630 m3 , significant changes to flotation column aeration design and widespread use of the Jameson cell and other pneumatic flotation cells. Over the corresponding period there has been increased used of machine characterisation measurements to benchmark and optimise flotation circuit performance. JKTech maintains a database of industrial flotation machine characterisation measurements. The database contains over 4000 entries and includes gas dispersion measurements, such as bubble size, gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity, cell dimensions and impeller tip speeds. Data comes from numerous operating sites and commodity groups, including gold, copper, molybdenum, nickel, palladium, lead-zinc, platinum, silica, phosphate, coal and iron ore. Flotation duties registered include flash flotation, preflotation, roughing, scavenging and cleaner circuits. Measurements have been conducted on a wide range of flotation machines from different manufacturers. This includes forced air machines, such as Outotec and Dorr Oliver, and self-aerated machines, such as Denver and Wemco. The database also includes substantial flotation column entries, such as the Microcel, Eriez/CMT Slamjet and Jameson cell. This paper describes the flotation machine characterisation database and discusses the variation between different types of industrial flotation machines, in operating production circuits.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE REGION of Western Canada covered by this re-port lies between the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and the structurally deformed rocks of the eastern Cordillera, extending northward from the international border to the 60th parallel. It is some 487,000 square miles in area, with a total sedimentary fill of about 535,000 cubic miles0>. It includes parts of the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the northeast corner of British Columbia and forms part of the geological region known as the Interior Platform, commonly referred to as the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The bedrock comprises carbonates and evaporites of Paleozoic age that lie on Precambrian crystalline rocks and are over-lain by a relatively thick blanket of Mesozoic and Tertiary elastic rocks. The nearly flat-lying bedrock, covered by a thick mantle of glacial drift, forms the Interior Plains physiographic province."
