A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak's potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. MANY baffling problems of crustal geology-of warping and folding, elevation, subsidence, and great dislocations of the earth's surface-may now be on the verge of yielding to the science of geophysics. Electric, magnetic, gravitational, geothermal, and seismic methods are being turned to the gathering of geological evidence buried by deep layers of rock, or lying beneath the waters of the oceans. In this hope, B. L. Miller expresses the opinion that these geophysical studies will sup- ply useful data bearing-on some of the more theoretical problems of North American geology. Among these for example, is the explanation of how Appalachia disappeared. This ancient land mass is supposed to have foundered beneath the Atlantic Ocean after the close of the Paleozoic era and the question arises, was it warped or faulted downward? The geophysical data, though meagre, indicate that the surface of the dense, basal rocks, the probable remnant of ancient Appalachia now underlying the Continental Shelf, slopes downwards to a depth of some two miles below sea level at a distance of 140 mi. from shore: thus suggesting that the subsidence was the result of warping downward rather than abrupt faulting.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant processing performance improvement project, with verifiable improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond using this equation. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study was undertaken with the metallurgical staff from two milling operations and process application specialists from a grinding media manufacturing company. “Task analysis” of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis identified the required steps, and ultimately yielded a “Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/ Improvement System.

PERHAPS the most extraordinary thing about business, the trade and production of the country as a whole, is its amazing continuity and growth, its momentum and energy. It goes on year after year, growing steadily, almost without breaks, in spite of every kind of disturbance. We have been grossly deceived into the idea that business is highly variable. We have taken a few things like pig iron, and the like, constructional activity broadly, and imagined that these are a trustworthy measure of trade. Actually they are the worst that we could find. They do not apply to more than 10 per cent or, at the most, possibly 15 per cent of the total of the country's industrial activity. The other 85 or 90 per cent, or even more, goes on growing surely and steadily just like the growth of population and the steady advance in technique, invention, discovery, and improved methods of production Let me give you what seems to me one of the most remarkable examples of this amazing momentum and regularity. You know that 90 per cent or more of the business of the country is done 'by means of checks. About seven-eighths of the total of all checks drawn are reported regularly every week in the newspapers. Let us follow these reports from week to week, just as they come, and plot them up against the correspond- ing weeks of last year, and the year before, and the gear before that, as far back as you would like to go. Take especially the figures for 140 selected cities out- side of New York.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 mls (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Borates are minerals that contain boron. Trace amounts exist in rocks, soil, water and people. Boron-containing ores are rare and U.S. Borax, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Borax, controls one of the world’s two world-class borate deposits. Through its global systems of mines, refineries, ports, sales offices and distribution centers, the company supplies nearly 45 percent of the world’s demand for borates. Borax has been mining borates in California for more than a century. This year the company celebrated 131 years of continuous business in the Golden State and 76 years at its operations in Boron, the site of California’s largest openpit mine. It also has mines and refineries in Argentina, refineries and ship-ping facilities in Europe and technical staff in the United States, North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. So, with the 130±years of borate mining and processing experience behind it as well as its global marketing and distribution centers, there is very little that Borax does not know about borates.

It has been observed that the rock debris of a strain burst event are often in the mode of tensile fracture. Seismic waves could create tensile fractures in the material nearby reflecting surfaces, such as at the boundary of the fracture zone and the rock surface of an underground space. The fractured rock could be ejected to the space when the seismic waves are powerful enough. The average ejection velocity of the ejected rock is a measure of the magnitude of a burst event. The ejection velocity is directly associated with the released energy from the seismic waves and with the strain energy stored in the rock prior to the burst. In some cases, the seismic wave induced tensile fracture and the energy conversion occur in successive moments during bursting. In this paper, tensile fracture caused by seismic waves is investigated through an 1D model. The relationship of the average ejection velocity of the ejected rock in a rockburst event is analytically established with the energy of the seismic waves and the strain energy stored in the rock.

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. "South Africa possess the biggest fluorspar reserves in the world followed closely by China. In light of the current commodity downturn this paper explores the use of Dense Media Separation (DMS) as a coarse pre-concentration method for two fluorspar deposits located in South Africa in which the dominant gangue is carbonate present in the form of dolomite and calcite. Heavy Liquid Separation indicated that conventional pre-concentration of the drill core samples from both deposits would result in unacceptably high fluorite CaF2 losses. At a maximum CaF2 loss to floats of 5% the benefit of DMS would be economically marginal and difficult to justify as a conventional pre-concentrator. In light of cashflow constraints, a twin flowsheet was proposed for the sole purposes of upfront cash generation in which the majority (67-77%) of the CaF2 would report to a high grade flotation plant in 38-41% of the mass whilst the rejects would be stockpiled for flotation at a later stage. Considering the proposed twin flowsheet approach the high grade product split was achieved using DMS and this paper documents the challenges encountered and results achieved. INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the commercial term for the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride, CaF2). Worldwide production of fluorspar is dominated by four countries namely China, Mexico, Mongolia and South Africa. Although South Africa is the fourth largest producer, it has the largest fluorspar reserves closely followed by China (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017a). Fluorspar is broadly categorized into two grades namely acid grade also referred to as acidspar (>97% CaF2); and sub-acid grade (ceramic and metallurgical grade) commonly referred to as metspar (=97% CaF2). Acid grade fluorspar is used for the production of hydrofluoric acid (HF) which in turn is used for the manufacture of fluorocarbons and semi-conductors in the electronics industry; metal processing; the production of insecticides, herbicides and cleaning detergents, and the manufacture of uranium tetrafluoride used to concentrate the uranium isotope 235 for use as a nuclear fuel (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001). Ceramic grade fluorspar (85-95% CaF2) is used in the ceramic industry as a flux and opacifier in the production of glass and enamels. Ceramic grade fluorspar is also used to make coatings for welding rods and as a flux in the steel industry. Metallurgical grade fluorspar (60-85% CaF2) is primarily used in the steel industry as flux to reduce the melting temperature and remove impurities in steel making. Similarly metallurgical grade fluorspar is also used as flux in cement production to reduce energy consumption (British Geological Survey 2010; Miller 2001)."

When gold plant residues are cycloned for producing a coarse product for backfilling the gold and uranium values are upgraded in the backfill product. Gravity concentration, wet high intensity magnetic separation and froth flotation were investigated as first-stage recovery processes to recover these economic values from backfill prior to placement underground. This paper addresses the recovery of values from flotation concentrates and also details the economic feasibility of a treatment route including flotation, followed by roasting of flotation concentrate to liberate gold entrapped in pyrite and reverse gold leaching of the calcine so produced.

R301 is a clad aluminum alloy, composed of a core of a duralumin-type alloy clad with a magnesium silicide alloy. It differs from other well-known clad alloys in that the cladding and the core respond to the same heat-treatments. and therefore the cladding contributes appreciably to the mechanical properties of the material. In Table I are reported the compositions of the core and cladding alloy for the material used for the experiments. This fact is well known and many investigations have been conducted to determine the features of this diffusion. Most of those investigations cover materials clad with pure aluminum; the present investigation covers a material clad with an alloy. Since the cladding thickness on R~OI varies with the gauge, as shown in Table 2, several gauges were investigated. Material and Procedure he material used was sheet of the following gauges: o.o2~, 0.040, 0.064, 0.102, 0.170 Cut in pieces approximately 3 by 5 in., it was in the cold-rolled state and was soaked for increasing times at the following temperatures: glo°F., 940°F., 970°F. A Lindberg cyclone furnace was used for the experiments. The procedure was as follows: The furnace was started empty with controlling pyrometer set at the determined temperature. After the furnace had reached that temperature, it was run for some 20 to 30 min. empty, in order to allow the temperature inside to become stabilized. Then the first samples were introduced. A load thermocouple, with recording pyrometer, was connected with the sample of the heaviest gauge. About 10 min. was required for the material to reach temperature and the soaking time was counted from that point. After zoo min. soaking, the second group of samples was introduced without stopping the furnace. After 200 min. more, the third group of samples was introduced, and so on, until the last sample had been introduced. Every time the furnace was opened and new samples were added, a drop of temperature was registered by the thermocouple connected with the material

"An important function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and more efficient utilization of a natural resource. Petroleum is such a resource, and its utilization depends to a considerable degree upon its characteristics. For this reason the Bureau of Mines, over a period of years, has analyzed many samples of crude petroleum by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method 3/ and published complications of crude-oil analyses. Among such publi¬cations are several reports presenting analyses of crude oils from fields in Oklahoma. The most recent of these relates to samples from southern Oklahoma. 4/ The present paper provides additional analyses of Oklahoma crude oils, largely from areas and formations not heretofore represented in published reports. The analyses of 248 samples from 153 fields are presented individually and collectively in the tables of this report.Crude oil has been produced in Oklahoma in commercial quantities since 1891, and peak production was reached in 1947. The State's cumulative production to January 1, 1944, is, according to the American institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, 5,186,466,000 barrels. 5/ The annual production of crude petroleum in Oklahoma for each year from 1891 to 1943, inclusive, is given in table 1."

The Henderson Mine is located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. A project is underway to replace the existing rail system which transports molybdenum ore 15 miles from the mine to the mill using three flight conveyor system. The first conveyor is a 1 mile, high lift conveyor which transports the ore from an underground crushing station to the end of the existing rail tunnel. The second conveyor is 10 miles in length and utilizes the existing rail tunnel to transport the ore from the mine, which is on the east side of the Continental Divide, to the mill located on the west side. The third conveyor takes ore from the tunnel portal to the mill through a series of 7 horizontal curves and inclines up to 15 degrees. The project applies advanced conveyor design to tackle the installation of the system in an operating mine and achieve the highest possible level of reliability. This paper outlines the design process for this system, discusses the options which were evaluated and how the current design evolved.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. Once it was believed that anthracite or coke were the only fuels generally available and suitable for the generation of water gas, particularly so when this gas was made in the generators of standard carburetted water-gas sets such as are commonly used in the manufacture of city gas. During the past 8 years, practice has changed considerably and it is now common to find gas plants operating without anthracite or coke and using bituminous coal in the generator. This change in fuel has appreciably increased the marketability and sales of certain coal producers' products; accordingly it is of interest to coal operators and others to know the reason for this change, the present trend in practice and the adaptability of various coals for generation of water gas. This paper briefly discusses these conditions and some of the factors relating thereto. Bituminous Coal not Ideal but Cheaper than Coke In spite of many changes which have been made in both process and generating apparatus for using bituminous coal as generator fuel more efficiently, in general it is not an ideal fuel for this purpose. It is supplanting coke because it costs less; it is so much cheaper per ton delivered at the gas works that water gas made therefrom costs less per unit-volume than that made from coke, even though the quantity of generator fuel consumed per therm (100,000 B. t. u.) of gas made is greater with coal. This is the reason why so many city gas plants, as well as others, are using bituminous coal instead of coke. Conditions Favoring Change from Coke to Coal The conditions which have made it possible and feasible, as well as economical, to supplant coke with coal may be summarized as follows: (1) Changes in methods of operating and alteration in generating apparatus; (2) lowering of the calorific standards for city gas, and (3) availability

INTRODUCTION Under certain circumstances the closure of former mines which are located above a certain flood level can result in problems such as the emanation of detrimental substances after having completed filling and reclamation operations. This especially applies to uranium mines in which the radiation dose could far exceed the dose of natural background radiation. By means of an example of the uranium mining in Germany in the following it will be demonstrated how to cope with this problem. On the basis of comparative investigations in various vein deposits and using ventilation scheme calculations proposals for the optimization of the necessary forced ventilation can be submitted. REPORT ON SITUATION In the period 1946 - 1989 the former Soviet-German joint- stock company "Wismut" developed into the biggest European uranium producer with a total output of about 220.000 t of uranium. A major mineraldeposit district was the deposit of Schlemaf Alberoda in the Saxon Ore Mountains, in which 80.000 t of uranium were produced. Thus it is among the biggest uranium de- posits of the world, from which various other metals were at- tracted for many centuries. The exploitation of the Schlemal Alberoda deposit involved steep veins in regions near the surface as well as depths of 1.800 m. Until 1991 a total excavation space of 40 million m3, which is flooded at present, was produced. With the average increase in the water level of 80 cm per week the final flood level is expected to be reached in the year 2003. The shaft 373 at present still being used for ventilation will be no longer available since the second quarter of 1998 after flooding the -540 m level because it is not connected with the excavation system near the surface. As a study shows, a radiation dose far above the natural back- ground radiation has to be expected for the town of Schlema due to the extensive mining activities near the surface and due to the subsequent displacement with missing depression fo the main mine ventilating fan. An uncontrolled air flow containing radon leaves the open mine excavation due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure and emanation caused by the barometric pressure drop with atmospheric pressure fluctuations. This mine air with its high-level radioactive equilibrium results in a high radiation dose in buildings (see Figure l). After having switched off the main ventilating fan in order to investigate the effect of the missing depression the increase in radon concentrations amounted up to 700% in various buildings of Schlema. This was partially due to the inversion state of the weather at that time. The high radon concentration has detrimental effects on the health of the population and of the miners working on the further reclamation in regions above the flood level. ANALYSIS OF THE RADON EMANATION RATE EXPECTED Considering the composition of the radon inflow from the mine workings it becomes evident that 80 % of the radon inflow originates from abandoned excavations and only 20 %from open ventilated mine excavations. This fact has to be taken into account for the ventilation after having reached the final state of flooding. After completing ventilation the radiation dose on the surface is mainly due to the radon emanation from excavations close to the surface. Investigations of the Wismut GmbH showed the in- crease in the specific radon emanation rate by a factor of 100 for abandoned excavations as compared to new drivings. One reason is the larger specific surface of abandoned galleries caused by displacements due to mining activities as well as by fall of hanging. Furthermore the radon can enter the gallery through joints, which have subsequently opened by convergences. All these effects result in a larger free surface available for radon diffusion. The large number of drivings in the deposit sections near the surface and the fact that the highest uranium contents are found near the surface as well as the high fracturing are further reasons for higher emanation rates. Considering these facts it can be expected that the radon inflow of 10.000 kBq/s, which refers to an open mine excavation of about 1.4 million m3, represents a minimum. Only by increasing the specific surface, for which a numerical value has still to be determined, this value will increase with certainty. An extensive radon emanation from the residual excavation, which cannot be flooded, can only be prevented by maintaining the ventilation system. The low pressure produced by the fan in the mine openings prevents the emanation of air containing radon due to the effect of the natural ventilating pressure. Without the controlled withdrawal of the radon the population as well as the miners working on the further reclamation in areas above the flood level would be endangered. Therefore the follow-
