EARLY in 1946 the Shen-Penn Production CO., a subsidiary of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co., was organized to operate the Shenan-doah Stripping, one of the largest open-pit anthracite mines in the world. This mine is located in the Western Middle Field near Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, Pa., and involves the removal of approximately 60,400,000 cu yd of overburden to permit the recovery of 9,200,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal from an area 8000 ft long and 2700 ft wide, with a maximum depth of 400 ft. Operations began in August 1946, and within the next few years 31,811,-000 cu yd of overburden and 2,994,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal had been removed. During the early days of open-pit mining operations, steam was the primary motive power. However, as the size of the equipment increased, so did the problems of fuel, water, labor, and maintenance. Because of its efficiency and convenience, electric power rapidly replaced steam. Later the modern diesel engine was developed, and today practically all stripping equipment is either electric, diesel-electric, or diesel-powered. In locations where electric power is not readily available or where operations are scattered over a large area, diesel power is favored. At Shenandoah operations are highly concentrated in a relatively small area, and this fact, coupled with the availability of ample electric energy, indicated the selection of electric-powered equipment. Since this was a new company, it was necessary to purchase every item, from the smallest tools to stripping shovels. Although the organization period was hampered by the postwar scarcity of materials, an excellent opportunity was afforded to set up a thoroughly modern plant. This paper will describe the power facilities, with particular emphasis on the more unusual features. The substation is a major item in a power distribution system, and a simple arrangement utilizing high quality equipment is an excellent investment. With this in mind, a 3000-kva unit type substation was selected and installed. This unit is made up of three sections, which are assembled simply by bolting together the various sections and connecting the power leads, see Fig. 1. The transformer proper, rated at 3000 kva, is oil-filled and nitrogen-sealed, having a 66,000-v Delta primary and 4160-v Wye secondary with a grounded neutral and 46-ohm ground resistor. The function of this resistor will be described later. Electrical energy is purchased from a public utility and is delivered to the main substation at 66,000 v over one or the other of two incoming lines. These lines terminate on a high voltage switching section on which high voltage fuses and Thyrite lightning arresters are installed. The outgoing feeder switching unit is made up of the following: 1—An auxiliary compartment consisting of potential and current transformers with necessary terminal blocks for connecting to power company metering equipment. 2—Another auxiliary compartment containing a control transformer, battery, and battery charger for the furnishing of power for tripping and reclosing of power circuit breakers. The assemblies in these auxiliary compartments are mounted on carriages that can be rolled in and out with ease. Potential transformers are readily accessible for inspection and fuse replacement. When withdrawn from the operating position they are completely de-energized and grounded. 3—Two feeder breaker compartments, each with a 1200-amp, 5000-v, solenoid-operated magneblast air circuit breaker, voltmeter, ammeter, overcurrent relays, and a ground relay. These power circuit breakers can be quickly and safely withdrawn or repaired. A built-in isolating mechanism is used for lowering the breaker to a transfer truck for repair or inspection or as a means of disconnecting the breaker from the source of power as an added precaution when working on power lines. The presence of antibiotic materials extractable with polar organic solvents was demonstrated in coals of various ranks. Since these antibiotics occur in low concentrations, 200 pounds of a high-volatile C coal was extracted with acetone at room temperature to obtain sufficient material for detailed study. The biologically active materials in the extract were concentrated by extracting with aqueous sodium hydroxide. The fractions soluble in sodium hydroxide inhibited bacterial cultures when present in concentrations comparable to those at which other antibiotics are active (5 µg/ml). Steam distillation of the extracts did not yield highly active materials, contrary to the finds of other investigators. Mass spectrometry of the extract indicated, mainly, the presence of 6-ring compounds in the region of mass 324 to 392. The predominance of 3-ring aromatic systems found by ultraviolet analysis suggests compounds such as biphenanthryl or similar structures. The activity of the hydroxide- soluble material decreased markedly when the phenolic hydroxyl groups were transformed into trimethylsilyl ethers. Hydrolysis of the ethers yielded a product having the same activity as the original material, which indicates that phenolic compounds are largely responsible for the antibiotic activity observed.

Fifteen boride composites were synthesized by hot pressing and evaluated by physical and incendivity testing as non-sparking tool materials. The incendivity tests, conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center, compared the boride compo-sites with standard cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide material used for coal cutter bits. Two titanium diboride composites and two zirconium diboride composites out-performed cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide in wear resistance and reduced tendency to cause ignitions. However, three of these candidates exhibited undesirable chipping. The remaining candidate, a TiB2-(Ni, Cu) composite, did not chip, nor did it cause ignitions at levels where cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide tools caused ignitions in the incendivity tests. Thus, this material appears to be a logical candidate for further development.

This paper presents the results of theoretical and technological studies on leaching ore of Bozshakol deposit. The major oxidized copper mineral of Bozshakol ore is atacamite, and the content of malachite, azurite, cuprite, copper sulfide minerals is insignificant. The chemical composition of the test sample, with mass, %: 0.9 Cu; 55.00 SiO2; 22.40 AI2O3; 9.00 Fe2O3; 2.24 CaO; 3.56 MgO. Technological studies on leaching the ore were carried out with sulfuric acid 5, 15, 25 and 50 g/dm3 in one and multistage (up to 4 stages) countercurrents. Size of ore 1 mm, the ratio S : L 1: 4. It was found that with increasing of acid concentration from 5 to 50 at one-mode leaching the copper extraction reaches 55 %. At multistage leaching the copper recovery reaches 73 %, a productive solution containing g/dm3: Cu - 4; Fe – 1.2; Al – 1.1 at a pH of 2.8. When leaching the cinders obtained by ore roasting in an atmosphere with limited value of oxygen, with increasing of the roasting temperature from 650 up to 750 °? the extraction of copper from the Bozshakol ores reduced from 31.5% down to 24.4%. The rate of filtration is markedly increased compared with the crude ore. When leaching the cinders obtained by roasting in a nitrogen atmosphere a marked increase up to 87.2-88 % of copper extraction from Bozshakol ores is observed. As an extractant for the extraction of copper from the pregnant solution used LIX984N extractant in kerosene. On the basis of the calculations it was built extraction isotherm and modeled processes of copper recovery with the circuit 2E + 1P, allowing up to 93 and 96% extraction. The through extraction of copper from the ore in the electrolyte was 67 %. Technology is recommended for semi test.

1994 estimates for Porgera are probable and proven reserves of 58 200 000 t of ore grading 5 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is related to an intrusive complex emplaced at shallow levels in poorly consolidated sedimentary rocks. The complex is located in a zone of fold-and-thrust deformation, whose formation may have been initiated shortly before emplacement and continues locally today. Abundant primary magnetite in the complex gives an intense, 5 km wide aeromagnetic anomaly. The deposit formed during two main stages of mineralisation, the first related to early magmatic-hydrothermal activity and the second representing later epithermal overprinting centred on the Roamane fault. Hydrothermal alteration followed closely on emplacement indicating a close genetic relationship between magmatism and mineralisation. Both stages of hydrothermal activity post-date and overprint early propylitic alteration. Several factors have acted in unison or sequentially to concentrate metals at the deposit, including an extensional or trans-tensional tectonic setting within an arc or collisional environment, the exsolution of a magmatic hydrothermal fluid prior to sulphur saturation in the melt, the development of the hydrothermal system into one favourable for transporting gold, the action of late-stage faulting in focusing epithermal fluid flow, and the role of dissolved gases in promoting fluid phase separation and high-grade ore deposition

"We have designed a planar perpendicular flow cell for electrochemical measurement of a mineral available as a fine powder. The working electrode consisting of mineral powder supported on a carbon paste surface as a 4 mm diameter disk, was concentrically positioned inside a vertical tubular reactor. The counter electrode was a 316L tube embedded in the body cell. The supportive media was a 1.2:1 mixture of candle wax and graphite powder respectively, which is a good electrical conductor. The concentrate electrode as a film attached on a carbon paste disk was prepared rubbing the surface carbon paste against dried powdered mineral. An Ag/AgCl 1 M KCl cell as a reference electrode was attached to the body cell by using a fast coupling fitting. A stable flow rate was achieved using a frequency inverter to drive the pump motor. The flow through the cell verified to be laminar due to the Reynolds number in the cell flow passage. Cyclic voltammetry from - 1200 a 600 mVSAgE were measured using a carbon paste with and without mineral attached to the surface. The main findings of this work were: a). Electrochemical measurement of mineral powder in contact with flowing samples was easily achieved using ground mineral. This is important where massive samples are not available. b). The voltammetric curve features of ground mineral coincided with reported data. c). The working electrode could be quickly replaced while maintaining very good reproducibility."

Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

The chalcopyrite-molybdenite (Cu-Mo) flotation industry is increasingly turning to organic depressants as suitable replacements for inorganic reagents, such as NaHS, due to environmental and safety concerns as well as high consumption rates of the inorganic reagents. This presents an opportunity for improvements or design and synthesis of alternative reagents. Disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (Orfom® D8) depressant is an organic depressant with a carboxylate group on one end and a trithiocarbonate group at the other end. Fundamental results are shown regarding the interaction of the Orfom® D8 depressant in the bulk flotation of a Cu-Mo concentrate from an operating North American mine. Cyclic Voltammetry on pure copper and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on pure chalcopyrite with Orfom® D8 depressant treatment are also reported. Through such characterization techniques a potential adsorption mechanism of Orfom® D8 on the mineral surface was identified and its depressant characteristics in the Cu-Mo flotation systems explained.

The options for designing slopes in complex geological conditions are reviewed. It is shown that modelling, especially numerical modelling, allows a degree of analysis that cannot otherwise be achieved. Examples are presented of how numerical modelling can be used to investigate fundamental aspects of rock mass behaviour. It is demonstrated that an important consequence of change in scale is that the mechanisms of failure also change. The complex failure of the footwall slope at Aznalcollar, a large open-pit mine in southern Spain, is discussed. Numerical modelling with UDEC (universal distinct-element code) has allowed the realistic simulation of displacements measured in the field

In recent years FIB has become a powerful instrument to perform ion beam sectioning and site-specific TEM specimen preparation. However, there are still gaps in understanding FIB-induced artifacts. Gallium ion beam damage and specimen heating during FIB milling can produce unwanted artifacts during FIB work.Calculations ofmaximumspecimentemperature increaseshavemostlybeen based on the assumption that ion beam implantation into substrate of infinite size. This deviates from finite specimen volume in FIB TEM specimen preparation that impedes specimen heat dissipation. In this paper, the authors will demonstrate a few commonly observed FIB artifacts, and discuss the concerns of specimen temperature rise during FIB milling process.

Properties of the soil profile fundamentally control water-limited ecosystems. Soil water availability affects vegetation dynamics of plant communities, but is also affected by these communities in return. Understanding this eco-hydrological interplay and the role of physical soil restoration is crucial for successful rehabilitation and management of post-mining landscapes in semi-arid areas. However, uncertainties exist in both the mathematical description of plant communities within ecological submodels and the predictability of future rainfall events. This study uses information gap decision theory combined with an ecohydrological system model to investigate how both uncertainties impact decision-making in the context of ecosystem rehabilitation. A range of management strategies are investigated to identify the optimal soil thickness for successful rehabilitation of native plant communities in Central Queensland. The results emphasise that thicker soils can counterbalance uncertainty in mathematical description of plant communities by increasing the simulated survival probability of plant communities. However, the influence of thicker soils on the robustness of plant communities against a change in future rainfall amount is rather marginal. By allocating an economic value for restoring a particular thickness of soil layer, these results can be used to evaluate the costs of ecosystem re-establishment with regard to two target measures - the survival probability of the plant community and their robustness against climate change.CITATION:Arnold, S, 2012. As Phelps Dodge Corporation addresses the environmental challenges of the 1990's, water management has become a key element in an overall waste minimization strategy. The Phelps Dodge Hidalgo copper smelter has implemented a comprehensive water management program that includes management of both fresh and process water utilized by its pyrometallurgical operation. Two major technological strategies are being implemented. They are the design, construction and operation of a raw water pre-treatment facility to allow increased evaporation within cooling towers thereby minimizing blow down, and the use of a brine concentrator to treat and recycle significant quantities of process water. The end result of this program is a significant reduction in raw water pumped from the underlying aquifer into the facility as well as a decrease in process water which must be impounded or otherwise treated.

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985. Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. The sulphur dioxide (SO2) for this process can be supplied either as liquid SO2, SO2 gas or as a sulphite-based salt. The majority of SO2/air operations have used sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent probably due to low capital cost. Liquid SO2 has also been used frequently, but due to concerns with safety and availability, this option is often not preferred. The solid salt sodium meta-bisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, but its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. Due to the high cost of SMBS, the increased capital cost for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant (green field or retrofit) usually has a pay-back of less than three years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas volume. Therefore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) E2 Regulations or the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and El Boleo).This paper focuses on the production of sulphur dioxide gas generated on site and on demand for the use in hydrometallurgical processes. The capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant is compared to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2."

"Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (Project) in San Juan was chosen by the Corps of Engineers to improve the soils adjacent to a 92 inch ID forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel. The soils to be improved consisted of sandy fill, soft clays, organics and stiff, plastic clays. A pre-construction soil investigation campaign, followed by a Bench Scale Mixing Programme and a Full Scale Field Test were performed during the pre-construction stage to assess soil properties, select binder type and dosage, and disclose the most suitable combination of injection parameters to improve the different soil layers. Production started at the end of August 2012 and was completed in October 2013; over 3,000 DMM elements were installed to a maximum depth of 57 ft below ground for a total gross volume of approximately 125,000 cubic yard. Each element consisted of two 5.5 ft diameter overlapping columns installed simultaneously, and their layout was such to meet the 100% Area Replacement Ratio required by the design. The ground improvement was successfully completed despite some difficulties due to a considerable amount of obstructions. Wet grab sampling and UCS testing of the retrieved specimens were designed as the main QC/QA method for the verification of the quality of the ground improvement. Upon completion of production, approximately 3,000 specimens were cast. The contract also required continuous coring of at least 12 randomly selected DMM elements and the testing of 8 cored specimens per bore for strength assessment. This paper will illustrate means and methods used in the field to construct the designed ground improvement and the results of the QC/QA program, with a focus on the differences between wet grab and coring sampling methods.INTRODUCTIONThe Rio Puerto Nuevo project involved the stabilization of a major drainage channel using the Deep Mixing Method (DMM), and the relocation of a 92 inch ID forced main sanitary sewer outfall. Previously, in 2004, a 40 x 16 x 2,000 ft. box culvert was installed under a different contract to convey runoff waters to the ocean.However, the connection between this culvert and the upstream network of channels was not constructed due to the presence of the forced main sewer pipe. In order for the drainage system to be completed and function properly, the 92 inch ID forced main needed to be lowered about 20 ft to allow for proper drainage.DMM was chosen by the US Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize the drainage channel as well as improve the soil under the relocated sewer main. The DMM was arranged in different zones (A through E) with variable top and bottom design elevations as can be seen in the typical cross section for Zone A (deeper and with a higher strength requirement) and Zone B as an example (Figure 1)."

PRESENT flotation processes depend almost entirely on the buoyant properties of air bubbles to effect separations of mineral and gangue, but there is no convenient method for measuring aeration in flotation cells. Consequently the relation between aeration and cell performance has not been definitely established. In connection with a comparative study of kerosene and froth flotation processes, a modification of the displacement method' was developed in which air escaping from the cell surface is measured with a wet-test meter. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 is satisfactory for use with a number of cells and is not critical, except that care must be taken to use connections and tubing large enough to avoid excessive back pressures. Attempts to use smaller tubing resulted in back pressures that caused displacement of the liquid level in the receiver, so that some air was lost around the sides, an occurrence readily visible when measurements were taken with only water passing through the cell. With the arrangement shown, the manometer indicated an average reading of about 1/2-in. water pressure. No loss of air was evident. Fig. 2 presents typical data for a standard Denver sub-A 24x24-in. unit cell operated at impeller speeds from 0 to 710 rpm. Each plotted point represents the average for five readings distributed over the entire cell surface. Readings were taken with only water passing through the cell. Results of this type have been used in a study of the influence of operating variables on cell performance and in detecting inherent differences in the operating characteristics of cells of various kinds. Although the information presented in Fig. 2 resulted only with water passing through the cell, the apparatus is suitable for use during flotation of coal when various reagents are present. Possible modi- fications that might prove convenient under special circumstances include varying the size and shape of the receiver and substituting a calibrated, inverted, water-filled carboy or other gas-measuring device for the wet-test meter. If such modifications result in excessive back pressures, some form of draft should be applied at the discharge end of the measuring system.
