1750 to 1850: The scene shifts westward across the Alleghenys to the young town of Pittsburgh; charcoal gives way to mineral coal as furnaces grow larger and the blast is heated; above all, Pennsylvania iron is adding strength to the new Nation and building an empire in the West. TWO names are inseparably associated with the Pittsburgh iron industry-those of George Anschutz and John Hayden. The iron ore deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania were found and developed early in the 18th century, and several forges and furnaces were built and operated. It was only after the revolution that the iron men crossed the Susquehanna River, built furnaces in the neighborhood of ore deposits of Franklin County, then along the Juniata River and its valley. Juniata Iron found a ready market in the Pittsburgh area. However, difficulty in transporting it across the Allegheny Mountains induced iron mas¬ters to seek ore and plant locations in the Pittsburgh district. One of the first to reach this area was George Anschutz, who migrated to America in 1789 at the age of 36, reaching Pittsburgh in the fall of 1790. Anschutz immediately set out to organize an iron company in Pittsburgh, and was able to interest some residents in his project. After being informed of an iron ore deposit located only three miles out of town (on the site of the present 26th St. and the Allegheny River) he decided to build there his blast furnace and foundry plant. Total cost of the installation was $300. When the furnace was put in operation, Anschutz, now known as Red George, found that the ore deposit was only an insignificant one and would last no more than a few weeks. A new deposit was found on Roaring Run, in the southeastern corner of Armstrong County. Anschutz transported some of this ore to the mouth of Two Mile Run, where it was loaded on horse wagons and transported to the furnace. The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

It has recently been discovered that the pH at which gold can be extracted from cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines can be increased 2 to 5 pH units by the addition of modifiers. Under these circumstances gold can be extracted at pH values from 9 to 11, commensurate with the pH range found in cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for AU (CN)[-2] over other metal -cyanide complexes is presented and discussed. In addition, potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are discussed.

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. The formation of boron-doped nickel aluminides Ni3AI, (76 at. % Ni) from elemental powders by reaction synthesis using reactive sintering was studied. The process involves the mixing of elemental powders of nickel and aluminium with various wt % of boron up to 1 wt % boron. Nickel and Aluminium powders were mixed in the correct proportion to form the intended boron-doped nickel aluminide intermetallic. XRD, SEMI EDS, Image analysis and Archimedes principle; were used to study the effect of Boron addition on the final microstructure, bulk density, average grain size of as reactively-sintered nickel aluminides (boron-doped), compared with no boron addition. The results showed that at greater boron content than 0.3 wt %, a two-phase non-equilibrium microstructure of consisting of NiAI phase in NiJAI matrix was formed that have been primarily retained even after heat treatment for 5 hours at 1000 °C. Boron was present in solid-solution within both the NiAI and the Ni3AI (in greater amounts) phases.

Detailed porewater profiles of arsenic and other interstitial metabolites were used to assess the relationship between trophic status, sediment redox chemistry and arsenic mobility in a historic tailings repository. The results demonstrate that in eutrophied systems which exhibit greater sediment oxygen demand, the depth of the Fe(III) redoxcline, and hence depth of arsenic release, may lie in close proximity to the sediment-water interface. As a result, arsenic scavenging mechanisms are significantly reduced, resulting in a greater flux of arsenic to the water column. Such considerations have important implications for the management of pit lakes, tailings ponds and contaminated lakes which may consider: 1) the discharge of sewage to the water body during operations; and/or 2) post-closure fertilization as a remediation strategy.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

THE nature of a collector-coated mineral surface has been the subject of some experimentation and much speculation. Various aspects of the problem have been isolated and studied; it is probable, however, that there exist aspects as yet unrecognized, which are needed for a complete description of the system. The recognized elements of the problem are: 1—The nature of the chemical units comprising the film and the nature of the forces holding these chemical units to the mineral surface; 2—The orientation of the chemical units at the surface; and 3—The disposition of the collector units at the mineral surface. This report touches upon all three aspects of the broad problem; it deals, however, with a new and heretofore unrecognized element—the mobility of the collector units in the two dimensions of the solid-liquid interface. Regardless of the viewpoint adopted as to whether the chemical units comprising the collector film are collector ions or molecules, held either by chemical or physical forces, the writers on flotation theory are in apparent agreement as to the orientation of the chemical units at the mineral surface. Wark and Cox' showed that the contact angle at a stable collector-coated surface in a constant chemical environment is independent of the nature of the mineral and of any resurfacing agent; it depends solely upon the collector used. They showed further that the value of the contact angle increases with the number of carbon atoms in a homologous series of compounds. Taggart, Taylor, and Knoll2 postulated that the collector ion is oriented with the chemically reactive, polar end toward the mineral surface and the non-polar, hydrocarbon-like end toward the liquid phase. In support thereof they cited the abstraction of p-p1 dihydroxydiphenylthiourea and of glycol xanthate8 by galena without a concomitant increase in the contact angle above that of clean galena. It was argued that in these cases the water-repellent layer which normally would be presented to the liquid phase owing to the orientation of the collector ions is overlain by a layer of water-avid groups, the hydroxyl groups. Implicit is the analogous orientation exhibited by a monomolecular layer of an insoluble substance at an air-water interface. It should be pointed out that these facts also are consistent with the concept that the collector units be flat on the surface of the mineral and that the response of the surface to an air bubble is determined by the ratio of the area covered by water-avid groups to the area covered by water-repellent groups; the areas being weighted according to the relative watef-avidity or water-repellency of the groups involved. The disposition of the chemical units of the collector film at the mineral surface has not received the attention it merits. Taggart4 concluded from the observed stoichiometry of the ions entering and leaving a surface that the stoichiometry is obeyed in detail at the surface of the mineral. Thus, in the case of xanthate-coated galena, pairs of xanthate ions are attached to surface lead ions. In the case of chemisorption, Gaudin and Preller postulated an agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum (the mineral surface) with those of the superstratum (collector film); in the case of the physical adsorption their position is not clear. In one place they state "the first type (physical adsorption) does not require any agreement between the atoms or ions of the substratum with that of the superstratum" and in another place that "It seems, in fact, as though some slight influence of the substratum is formed even in physical adsorption." The present work shows that in some cases of chemisorption the chemical units of the collector film are in constant surface-bound motion and may not be assigned to any site of the surface, hence there is no permanent association between the chemical units of the film and the atoms or ions of the solid. The physical property of the collector film that is of paramount importance is its surface energy. Although this property is not susceptible to direct experimental determination, the related contact angle is. The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the unfractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

The near surface inclined gold ore deposit is mined out at freezing temperature. The replacement of ore pillars by artificial freezing rocks during the rock pressures control in this conditions presented no difficulties. At the present, the mining operations are maintained at a depth of more than 300 meters. The exploration of mining conditions showed partial warming of rock mass and unstable ground conditions. Analytical calculations using a mathematical model of heat exchange predicted undesirable duration of freezing of artificial pillars. Practical techniques and recommendations for mining with ice pillars as an artificial support system using a new freezing method are discussed.

A dynamic model that predicts the variation of carbon content with time in the argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) process has been developed. The model recognizes three distinct zones in the AOD vessel: the tuyere region in which the blown oxygen reacts very rapidly with the metal components in the molten alloy; a region in which bubbles of inert gas and oxide drop lets rise through the molten alloy; and a zone in which the slag layer can interact with the molten alloy. The process is dynamically controlled by the rate at which dissolved oxygen, produced on the surface of rising oxide droplets, and dissolved carbon diffuse through the molten alloy to react at the surface of the rising bubbles. The rate at which carbon and oxygen react on the bubble surface is assumed to be intrinsically very fast. Predicted decarburization rates compare reasonably well with rates measured in the AOD vessel at Middleburg Steel and Alloys. The model has been developed primarily to allow development of a time-optimal blowing stategy for the AOD vessel.

Cu isotope fractionation in low-temperature aqueous environments has been well documented. Here Cu fractionation was applied to two distinct, yet related, mining problems. First, an exploration geology application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in oxidized leach caps, chalcocite enrichment blankets and hypogene mineralization in three porphyry copper deposits located in the southwestern U.S. Cu isotope patterns exist in a vertical distribution within the mines, coupled with distinct relationships with the Cu grade. Second, a hydrometallurgical application, where copper isotope fractionation was measured in leach fluids, feed and residues from a quick leach test (QLT) on Cañariaco, Peru ores. The results indicate the relative proportions of the minerals providing Cu during leaching. Interpretations of the QLT test measurements indicate covellite is the dominant ore mineral providing Cu during leaching. Both applications clearly demonstrate the use of the Cu isotope technique to understand low-temperature aqueous processes involving copper.

Liquidus data are presented for mixtures in the ternary system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 in equilibrium with a gas phase with O2 pressures ranging from 10-10.9 to 1 atm. Data obtained are combined with previously published data to construct lines of equal 02 pressures and lines of equal CO2/H2 mixing ratios along the liquidus surface. Courses of crystallization of selected mixtures under conditions of constant total composition, constant O2 pressures, and constant CO2/H2 mixing ratios are discussed. PHASE equilibrium studies of silicate systems where iron is one component are complicated by the fact that iron readily occurs in three different states of oxidation: Fe3+, Fe2+, and Fe0. Success or failure in work with iron silicate systems is to a large extent dependent on control of the oxidation state of iron and all investigations therefore must be carried out under carefully controlled atmospheric conditions. Silicate systems containing only strongly electropositive metals (like Na+, Ca2+, Mg", etc.) can, for simplicity, be treated as condensed systems, that is, the gas phase can be neglected and the phase relationships discussed in terms of the phase rule written in the well known simplified form P + F = C + 1. In the case of iron silicate systems, however, the composition of the condensed phases varies with the gas composition, and a complete picture of phase relationships can be obtained only by varying the gas composition over a wide range. In order to understand the phase relationships in the more complicated multicomponent silicate systems with iron oxide as one of the constituents, a knowledge of the ternary system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 is essential, since it constitutes a bounding portion of all such systems. It was with this in mind that the present study was undertaken. Previous Work A considerable amount of work has been done on various aspects of the chemistry and metallurgy of systems containing silica and iron oxides. The two bounding binary systems FeO-Fe2O3 and FeO-SiO2" The first attempt to obtain information on phase relationships of iron oxide-SiO, mixtures at different 0, pressures was made by Greig.' Darken" determined the melting points of iron oxide on solid silica under various atmospheric conditions. Darken did not determine experimentally the composition of the melts at liquidus temperatures but discussed very ably the principles involved in applying the phase rule to the system. In a recent study Schuhmann, Powell, and Michal8 determined experimentally the liquidus surface of a portion of the ternary system and combined the new information with data in the literature to construct a phase diagram. Their method was briefly as follows: Homogeneous mixtures with various contents of SiO2, FeO, and Fe2O3 were made up by melting together stock mixtures in various proportions. Samples of the homogeneous mixtures, the compositions of which were determined by chemical analysis, were then heated in platinum crucibles in an inert atmosphere until equilibrium among the condensed phases was achieved. The samples were quenched to room temperature and the phases present determined by microscopic examination. Assuming that no change in composition takes place during the equilibration run in inert atmosphere, the liquidus surface can be determined, but no information is obtained regarding the partial pressures of 0, of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases. The author's method, to be described in the next section, permitted the location of points at the liquidus surface as well as a calculation of the corresponding partial pressures of O2. Experimental Method General Procedure: The standard quenching technique was adapted for a study under controlled variable atmospheric conditions. Premelted mixtures of silica and iron oxides in platinum envelopes were held at constant temperature under chosen atmospheric conditions until equilibrium was reached among solid, liquid, and gas phases. The sample was then quenched to room temperature, the phases present identified, and, for the most significant runs, the composition was determined by chemical analysis. The corresponding partial pressure of 0, was calculated from known equilibrium constants of the gas reactions occuring in the furnace atmosphere. Materials: Starting materials were oxides of commercially highest available purity; cp silicic acid was dehydrated by heating to 1350°C for 6 hr and cp Fe2O3 was dried at 400° C for the same length of time. The thermal stability of fully silicided NiSi with arsenic doping on silicon was investigated. The aims of the work were to investigate the Ni silicide phase-related issues associated with arsenic dopant and thermal annealing on Ni-FUSI/HfO2/Si and Ni-FUSI/HfSiO/Si gate stacks. It was found that arsenic-incorporation demonstrated some improvement in both morphology and phase stability of nickel silicided films at high processing temperatures regardless underlying gate dielectrics. The correlations of Ni-Si phase transformation and arsenic doapnt with their electrical and physical changes were established by sheet resistance measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Furthermore, the modulation of the work function (WF) of Ni fully silicided gates by arsenic impurity is presented, comparing the effects of dopant (As) on the WF and silicide phases (NiSi and NiSi2). It confirmed that the work function of NiSi can be tuned by implanting arsenic dopant, but it ineffective for NiSi2 phase.

Although hydrogen has been intensively studied in its relation to steel quality, the methods of sampling and determinations are still open to question. It is true that various procedures have been proposed but actually there has not been sufficient agreement to establish a common base from which to work. As a result, it is difficult, to say the least, to correlate the reported results of some of the investigators in this field. The present symposium, premised on methods rather than effects, should prove of considerable value. For the purpose of this discussion two methods of sampling and analysis will be considered. First, sampling of molten steel in the ingot mold by use of an evacuated tube and cylinder using conventional methods of analysis for the gases collected; second, analysis by vacuum extraction involving the use of heating equipment and the determination of the amount of hydrogen evolved from solid steel samples by measurement at reduced pressures. Both methods have been used at Duquesne Steel Works and it is believed that either may be used with considerable benefit if the limitations of each method are recognized. Evacuated Tube and Cylinder Sampling devices for gases in molten steel suggested by various investigators range from very cumbersome and complicated devices to the relatively simple evacuated tube and cylinder used by Soler for deter- mining the CO content of the bath. This latter device was adopted (Fig. I) and modified to meet conditions at Duquesne Works. The principal modifications were in placing the cylinder at the side of the tube and the use of a sleeve on the immersion end of the tube. The first modification was made so that the cylinder could be readily detached and taken to the laboratory; the second, because of the difficulty encountered in obtaining an airtight seal after sampling and because of our practice of re-using the tube. Rigid control of the method of sampling and of the handling of the sample according to plan are of primary importance in hydrogen determinations. This applies to both the sampling of molten steel and the determination of the hydrogen content of cold steel samples. Except for a few preliminary samples taken from spoons, all work on molten steels using the evacuated tube was confined to the sampling and analysis of molten steel during the pour. As mentioned, uniformity of sampling was a basic consideration. As a result, every effort was made to follow definite sampling techniques and procedures. These included control of the depth below the surface from which the sample was taken, the timing between the shutoff and taking of the sample, as well as maintenance and care of the equipment. The distance below the surface at which the sample was taken was readily controlled bv means of a crosspiece and centering device attached to the tube. This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of tracer gas studies conducted at three facilities where bagger hoods had been installed several years ago to remove airborne silica dust from the vicinity of the bagging operator. The studies indicated that for optimum benefits makeup air must be evenly dispersed, the hood enclosures and duct systems must be as airtight as possible, the average intake air velocity of each hood should be at least 200 fpm, and the hoods and duct systems must be properly maintained.

Foi desenvolvido um composto de elastômeros termorrígido (ebonite) para a fabricação de um selo mecânico de vedação de hélices de barcos, para substituir os modelos comumente encontrados de cerâmico, que possuem alto custo e são fabricados no exterior, e de borracha com face em Teflon®, que apresentam problemas de adesão na linha de junção entre estes materiais, resultando em vazamentos. O composto de elastômeros deveria possuir dureza em torno de 90 Shore D, baixo coeficiente de atrito, resistência térmica, a abrasão e a intempéries marítimas, ao ataque de radiação UV e ser autolubrificante. A formulação que resultou no melhor produto consistia das borrachas natural, nitrílica, nitrílica carboxilada, e fluorada (Viton®), aditivadas com alto teor de enxofre (37,5 phr), cargas reforçantes, plastificantes e lubrificantes sólidos, entre outros aditivos. A aditivação e mistura das borrachas foram realizadas em misturador interno Banbury e misturador de cilindros aberto, enquanto a conformação e vulcanização dos corpos de prova e dos selos foram realizadas por prensagem a quente. Foram realizadas análises de curva reométrica, morfológicas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, de resistência à tração, rasgo, dureza e de abrasão em torno mecânico simulando a pressão de vedação em atrito com o aço inox girando a 800 rpm. O êxito do selo ficou evidente, pois após a montagem em barcos, durante um ano tem realizado com sucesso a sua função.

[Introduction] Section 122 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, Public Law 9595, directed the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, to review all relevant information and determine whether emissions of radioactive pollutants into ambient air will cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health. In August 1979, EPA published a preliminary report on assessments of public health impact resulting from emissions of radionuclides into air from a broad spectrum of major source categories (1). A section of this document presented a theoretical analysis of the radioactive airborne emissions from several non-uranium mines including iron, copper, zinc, clay, limestone, fluorspar, and phosphate. Since 1978 EPA's Las Vegas Laboratory has been gathering field data on actual radionuclide emissions from these mines to support the earlier theoretical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of those field measurements in comparison with the assumed values for the theoretical analysis. Data were presented in EPA's preliminary report on both gaseous radon-222 and particulate uranium-238 emissions from non-uranium mines. Most of the emissions data were rough estimates based upon the uranium content of the ore. Preliminary data from a few field studies were also used. Although both the theoretical and field studies by EPA were concerned with radon-222 and radioactive particulate emissions, this paper will concentrate only on the radon effluents. Radon from mines seems to have the greatest potential for possible health effects due to radiation. Data on particulate emissions are presented in other technical reports (2-5). [Theoretical Study] The theoretical emission data are presented in Table I. The estimates for the iron, zinc, and clay mines are based upon preliminary measurements taken by the Las Vegas laboratory. The estimates for the other mines were made assuming that 20% of the total radon-222 in the ore was released during the mining process and the radon release rate from the exposed ore surface was a factor of two greater than that resulting from mining. [ ] Dose assessments for radon from these mines were carried out using model facilities located on generic sites (1). The AIRDOS-II computer code (for estimating dispersion of airborne pollutants) with some minor modifications was used to determine working level exposures to a maximally exposed individual and a regional population. A conversion factor for risk/WL-year(O.021 fatal cancers/person-WL-y) was developed primarily from information on uranium miner exposures (6). This computer code and conversion factor were then applied to the assumed emission rate of radon-222 from each type of mine to develop estimates of working levels, lifetime risks and number of fatal cancers. A summary of this data is presented in table II. [ ] The highest estimated number of cancer deaths per year of operation is 0.05 cancer deaths or 1.0 death due to radon during the 24 year life of a phosphorous mine. For comparison, EPA estimates that underground uranium mines would cause .03 cancer deaths per year of operation in a regional population(1). [Field Study] As a followup to the theoretical study, EPA's Las Vegas laboratory began making measurements in 1978 of actual emissions of radon-222 and radioactive particulates from mine vents at several facilities for each of the industries listed in Table I and II. They were intended to verify general information and radon emissions from EPA's theoretical estimates.

Barrick Gold Granny Smith Mine is currently undergoing conversion from an open cut operation to an underground mine at the Wallaby deposit. The underground project commenced in 2005 with the development of the reserves immediately below the pit and is now currently entering a production ramp-up phase for mining of these two initial surfaces below the pit. With increasing gold prices the owner has been forced to re-evaluate the underground project and has decided to investigate the potential of a deep level mine. This deep level underground mine presents a collection of challenges with the most notable being exploitation of a series of well separated near horizontal lodes ranging in thickness from less than 1 to 20 m. A variety of room and pillar mining methods are employed for extraction with careful consideration to resource recovery and pillar design for long-term stability. Compounding these deep level challenges is a need to accelerate mine level development to maintain the production profile of the mine. This paper describes the challenges, key learnings and outcomes of the studies undertaken to date associated with this project.
