I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. And a new generation of safety culture experts are telling mining companies how to use it: It is a situation that is still too common in the mining industry: the latest personal protective gear is in place. The safety rules are known and followed. And then, in a moment of inattention or carelessness, a mistake is made and someone gets hurt or killed. Common wisdom claims that such accidents are impossible to eliminate entirely. Mining is dangerous, and some miners will always be hurt and killed. An increasing number of mine safety experts, however, reject the common wisdom. A year with zero mining deaths is possible, they say; with the use of one of the newest weapons to the mining industry in the safety war: the concept of safety culture. Safety culture refers to the set of attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that influence safety in the work environment. It is also sometimes called the way an organization behaves when no one is watching. Robert Peters, of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), describes safety culture this way: ?It?s what?s believed on a day-to-day basis. For example, if a miner sees a workplace hazard and he truly believes that his boss wants him to identify the hazard and bring it to the company?s attention, that would be an example of a positive safety culture.?

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

Thermodynamic properties were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for lithium metasilicate (Li2Si03) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si205). Their enthalpies of formation were investigated by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard values are ?Hf°298 -393.8 ± 0.8 kcal/mole for Li2Si03, and ?Hf°298 -611.8 ± 1.0 kcal/mole for LiSi205. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were measured by copper-block drop calorimetry from 298 to 1,404 K for Li2Si03, and from 298 to 1,281 K for Li2Si205. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined adiabatically from 6 to 305 K for Li2Si205 only. The derived standard entropy is S°298 = 29.20 ± 0.10 cal/deg-mole. The various experimental data were combined with other data from the literature, and resulting properties of ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf were tabulated as a function of temperature.

From 1968 to 1975, most work in surface modification of inorganic materials involved silane coupling agents. A silane coupling agent can be described simply as an oganosilicon chemical having a general formula RSi-X3 wherein the R group is attached to a silicon in a thermally and hydrolytically stable manner, and X is a hydrolyzable group usually having an alkoxy functionality. About 1975, Kenrich Petrochemicals brought into the market place titanate coupling agents. Titanate coupling agents usually consist of one alkoxy group and three functional groups attached to a central titanium atom. Zircoaluminates became available in about 1982. Zircoaluminate organometallic coupling agents, which vary principally in their respective organofunctionalities, arise from a basic technology in which two different types of organic ligands are selectively bound to a low-molecular weight zircoaluminate backbone.

Introduction Numerous papers have been written dealing with the construction and functions of, and the environmental conditions created by, Diesel locomotives. Therefore, it is not my intention to attempt to deal with these phases of Diesel transportation other than to make reference to them in ?relation to and in connection with actual operation. The rapid expansion of industry during recent years and the necessity of products being made available at competitive prices in home and world markets has made the demand for cheaper coal a very serious factor for the coal industry. This condition has meant each coal producing country looking into ways and means whereby greater productivity and reduction in cost could he achieved. Surveys made show that, in addition to face mechanization, savings, in some cases substantial, can be made in transportation. Ventilation The most efficient mines are in-variably the well ventilated ones, for it is true that, where there is good ventilation, there are usually good roads. These combined factors are very essential where Diesel locomotives are used. Good roadways and track allow speed, and good ventilation dilutes rapidly any disagreeable exhaust gases. Locomotive Development In the older types of auxiliary rope haulage, coal hauled per haul-age hand is usually very low.

The iron ores of southeastern Cuba present a subject of exceptional geological interest. Their relations to the inclosing rocks are varied and in some cases unusual. The problem of their geological origin is not a simple one and for this reason has occasioned some divergence of views among previous observers. Profiting, however, by these earlier studies and by more detailed field and laboratory observations as well as by the experience of added years of mining, much more satisfactory descriptions and interpretations can now be prepared. Previous Work In 1884, interest in the southeastern coast of Cuba became active among the consumers of iron ore along the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. Active development was undertaken by the Juragua Iron Co., Ltd., a corporation affiliated with the Bethlehem Steel Co., and the Pennsylvania Steel Co. The property of the Juragua company, which is situated about 15 miles east of Santiago, was studied in June and July, 1884, by Dr. James P. Kimball, at the time Professor of Economic Geology in Lehigh University and one of the best known of American mining geologists. Dr. Kimball published on his return two papers, the first important descriptions which we have of the local geology.1 It is

"Recent DOE workshops highlight the need for advanced soft magnetic materials leveraged in novel designs of power electronic components and systems for power conditioning and grid integration. Dramatic weight and size reductions are possible in these applications through operating at increased frequencies. This manuscript discusses processing and composition design approaches for optimizing FeCo-based nanocomposites for higher frequency operation at 100 kHz and above. The proposed strategy involves starting with prior compositions known to exhibit high inductions, optimal field crystallization induced anisotropy, and excellent mechanical and high temperature magnetic properties. Proposed alloy modifications for the applications of interest would include increased amorphous phase resistance, optimum induced anisotropy, and minimized or carefully engineered magnetostriction. Relevant process developments would target reduction of ribbon thickness by optimizing the casting process or post-processing treatments such as chemical thinning or rolling. Three archetypes FeCo-based nanocomposites are described including near equiatomic FeCo-based, Fe-rich and Co-rich alloys.MotivationSilicon steels are widely applied for 60Hz utility-scale transformers [1]. For applications at high frequencies, however, Si-steels exhibit unacceptable losses and ferrites are typically used due to their high electrical resistivity and good soft magnetic properties [2]. However, the low inductions offerrites have limited their applications in power electronics. Developments in rapid solidification have led to amorphous metal alloys and controlled nanocrystallization processing has resulted in state-of-the-art amorphous/nanocrystalline nanocomposite soft magnets [3-5]. Commercial utility-scale transformers made with Fe-based amorphous materials have been demonstrated to result in significant energy savings with an associated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions [6]. DOE workshops held in 2010 emphasized a need for advanced soft magnetic materials for the next generation of power electronics. For advanced power conditioning and grid integration applications, frequencies of 20 kHz up to -1 MHz are of interest depending on the power level [7]. Here, we review previous work and discuss the approaches to optimize FeCo-based nanocomposite materials for high frequency applications."

Large amounts of by-products, including coal gangue, circulating fluidized bed (CFB) slag, and coal fly ash (CFA), are generated during mining, washing and burning of high alumina coal (HAC). The stockpile of these by-products of HAC will cause the pollution of air, water and soil. Meanwhile, the unbalanced regional distribution of bauxite and alumina production has been a critical challenge for the sustainability of world alumina refineries, especially for China. Therefore, economical extraction of alumina from by-products of HAC not only resolves the environmental pollution problems caused by stockpile but also decreases the dependence degree of import bauxite in China. Considering the fact that powder alumina can only be produced by alkali methods, the alkali extraction of alumina from by-products of HAC is summarized in this paper. Based on the formation process of by-products of HAC, the principle, research status, and problem of existing methods were analyzed and discussed, as well as the forecast of research trend. The analyses indicate that simplex recovery of alumina from byproducts of HAC generates large amounts of leaching residue (red mud) with difficulty for disposing, while comprehensive extraction of alumina and silica meets the research trend for clean and high-value utilization.

The first six Reports of Investigations in this series , pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit, dealt with ( 1 ) the dust produced by blasting , ( 2) the effect of stemming upon gases generated by blasting , ( 3 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite , (4) the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite , ( 5) comparison of dust and gases produced when blasting charges of dynamite in drill holes , bombs, and mud - cap shots , and ( 6 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 40 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite .

Dust concentrations inside and outside enclosed cabs on several types of mining machinery were measured by the Bureau of Mines. Results indicated that properly enclosed cabs can offer significant dust protection for machine operators. Recommendations for improvements in cab technologies were discussed.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

Closure is an inevitable part of the life cycle of every mine. Successful closure outcomes critically depend upon early and ongoing integration of closure planning and mine planning. Early and holistic integration minimises residual risk and maximises opportunity to leave a cost-effective, positive legacy for the company, investors and future land users. Both disciplines are inherently interconnected and aim to maximise ‘value’ via trade-offs. Historically, integration of closure into mine plans has been poorly implemented across the industry. There is still a perception that closure planning only starts as the end of a mine life approaches. This inevitably leads to tension when making business decisions, with progressive closure often being deferred due to short-term drivers and incentives. To create a positive legacy after production has ceased, this tension can be managed by transparently and fully informing business decision-makers, such that the impacts of short-term decisions on long-term closure objectives are understood. BHP recently updated a business-wide standard ‘Our Requirements for Closure and Legacy Management’ designed to strengthen collaboration, education and integration of closure across the entire life cycle of the asset. Concurrently, the ‘Life of Asset’ definition was refined to include the postproduction phase, until closure objectives have been met. This paper discusses the criticality of mine planning integration with closure and how updates to Our Requirements sharpen the focus from transactional to transformational planning. These concepts are applicable to any mining operation aiming to achieve successful closure across the full asset life cycle, from exploration to post-production.

Cardox blasting is used widely in coal mines in the United States . A model of a Cardox blasting device was approved by the Bureau of Mines subject to certain conditions and limitations , and the approval was extended to other models from time to time . Certain special hazards are entailed in the use of Cardox as with explosives . One of these is flying shells . In some blasts , the Cardox shell is violently ejected from the borehole and flies like a projectile , frequently ricocheting off solid objects and striking points considerably off the line of its initial flight . Flying shells have been known to pierce the webs of structural - steel beams , to pass through both sides of allsteel mine cars , to be driven through stout hardwood timbers , to knock out timber sets , to damage loading equipment , and to break or short - circuit power lines . A considerable number of shot - firers and other workers have been struck by flying shells and killed or injured . Accidents from this cause , although not as frequent as other types of mine accidents , are usually serious , closely approximating accidents caused by blasting with ordinary explosives . The increasing number of such accidents prompted a Bureau of Mines field investigation of possible methods of preventing dangerously violent ejections of Cardox devices . This report contains pertinent data collected during the investigation and describes methods tested and discarded as well as the development and proof of an apparently satisfactory method .

Provide respiratory protection and a clean work environment for stationary or semimobile workers at minerals processing plants. Approach An Overhead Air Supply Island (OASIS) was developed which filters, conditions, and evenly disperses an envelope of clean air over a worker's head, thereby insuring reduced dust levels and a clean work environment. How It Works The concept for the OASIS derives from an earlier Bureau development of a canopy air curtain for continuous mining machines (see Technology News #21). In this application, the benefits of a reliable, self-contained, self-cleaning industrial-duty air filtration and distribution system are extended to the minerals processing field. The OASIS draws dust-laden room air into a filtration system, removing the dust and delivering clean air to a specific 16-square-foot area. "Portions of the Icy Cape placer Au district have been described and exploited since the early 1900s. Industrial studies of Au-bearing garnetrich intervals established a 3.5 million troy ounce resource in the western half of the district. This estimate is not compliant with CIM and SME definition standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. We note high variability in the textures of sediments and their heavy mineral (HM) content and composition in the district, probably as a function of the depositional environment. Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. Icy Cape District land and resources are owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and managed by the Trust Land Office (TLO). IntroductionThe Icy Cape Heavy Minerals (HM) District in Alaska subtends more than 200 km2 fronting the Pacific Ocean and backing to the foot of the Robinson Mountains at about 1700 m above sea level. We classify the district into geomorphic provinces; the eastern region as deltaic (Figure 1) and the western region as coastal plain (Figure 2), based on geomorphologic expressions. The coastal plain is entirely built up of unconsolidated outwash sediments and ancient beach sand deposits."

"IntroductionIn order to predict the accepted industrial practice for the year 2000, it may be helpful to first consider the rate of development of scientific knowledge. If the speed with which man can travel on commercial vehicles is taken as a criterion for determining the rate of progression, then it can be seen from Figure 1 that advancement in our present century is very rapid. Likewise, if computer technology is used as a criterion for the measurement of scientific advancement, it becomes evident that technological evolution can be highly exponential. These two examples are sufficient to demonstrate that engineers and managers cannot afford to regard scientific development as being linear with respect to time if they are to avoid underestimating the needs of society.Within this framework of overall development, the time required for individual ideas to progress from inception to regular application has decreased considerably. For example, X-rays first discovered by Roentgen in the 1890's and now used widely in medicine and engineering, required a developmental period of some eighty years. The motorcar evolved from early beginnings at the turn of the century to a position of great social impact in sixty years. Rectifier materials used in high frequency radar to the present explosion in communications, required forty years. As illustrated in Figure 2, the period is shortening rapidly.The use of sound waves appears to be following a similar path. There is now a considerable body of knowledge concerning their behaviour and exceptional advances have been made. In medicine and engineering the sonic approach to examination is well established, and acoustic testing forms the basis of several diagnostic and quality control applications. With respect to metals engineering, ultrasonic testing has contributed to the understanding of the relationship between the size and number of internal defects and the probability of premature failure. This has allowed the designer to incorporate appropriate safety factors in his designs; but more importantly, the realization of the deleterious effect of inclusions on the performance of the final product has resulted in a continuous pressure on the material suppliers to reduce the number of defects in their products.It is not only the designer who is demanding defect free material but also the fabricator, as material breakdown during manufacture can be prohibitively expensive. Examples of this can be found in both the aluminum and steel industries where ultra clean sheet is required to ensure that rejections are minimized during beverage can manufacture and other deep drawing operations."
