Mining engineers frequently encounter complex design problems for which the critical components of the design are difficult to quantify or compare. Teams of people typically work on these designs and human perceptions and judgments play a strong role. To assist with this process, the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as a decisionmaking tool is described in this paper. Although the technique is used in many other disciplines, it is currently not widely used in mining engineering in South Africa. To use the AHP process, the problem should be treated as a hierarchy that defines the goal, the alternatives to reach it, and the criteria for evaluation of these alternatives. Pair wise comparisons are conducted on the criteria of the hierarchy to establish priorities. The value of the technique is that it is simple to test for consistency amongst the pair wise comparisons to ensure that the answer obtained is better than that provided by a random selection. To illustrate the technique, the use of a backfill support system in a platinum mining project was investigated. Ten design parameters, which will be impacted by the use of backfill, were identified and weighted according to their relative importance. The result of the AHP evaluation was that the use of a backfill support system should be preferred to a conventional support system at the mine.

Recent research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that the segregation process has merit for treating oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores. The process comprises heating the crushed ore with salt and coke or other carbonaceous materials at about 700° C. to produce fine flake copper, which then is recovered by conventional copper-flotation methods. Bench-scale laboratory tests of a number of oxidized and mixed copper ores assaying 0.78 to 5 percent Cu gave copper recoveries of 73 to 96 percent. The flotation concentrates assayed 21 to 76 percent Cu, depending on the ore being treated.

"Tough economical conditions and high grade but fine-grained ore processing have forced the mining industry to look for more efficient processes. Isa Mill Technology for ultra-fine and fine grinding is one such process employed at several mining operations in Australia including Mount Isa Mines Limited in Australia. Mount Isa Mines is a business unit of MIM Holdings Limited. MIM is an Australian-based international mining and mineral processing company with around 8000 employees worldwide. Major products include copper, gold, zinc-lead-silver, coal and technology sales.The Isa Mill is a horizontal stirred mill with sizes up to 3 m3 chamber net volume and 1 120 kW installed motor. It was jointly invented by Mount Isa Mines of Australia and Netzsch Feinmahltecknik GmbH of Germany for ultra-fine and fine grinding duties in the minerals industry. Isa Mill operations started in 1994 at the Mount Isa Mines Leadzinc Concentrator and then at MIM’s McArthur River Mine in 1995. These Isa Mills have been used to liberate sphalerite and galena at Mount Isa and silica at McArthur River by grinding to less than 7 micron.This paper discusses the Isa Mill Technology and reports on the metallurgical performance of the Isa Mills at Mount Isa Mines, including work done over the last 9 years to improve mill design, process efficiency and maintenance, which has resulted in the current state-of-the-art Isa Mill Technology.INTRODUCTIONThe current leadzinc deposits at Mount Isa Mines (George Fisher, Hilton and Isa) have an average grade of 10.5% zinc, 7.2% lead and 165g/t silver. Fine grinding, in particular in the zinc retreatment circuit requiring a milled product P80 of 7 micron, is essential to treat the ores from the Mount Isa Mines deposits. Every one micron size reduction in the zinc retreatment circuit below a P80 of 10 micron improves the overall plant zinc recovery by 1%, resulting in an increase in revenue of about 1 million dollars per annum."

"Modeling of big faults or weak planes of strong and weak discontinuities is of major importance to assess the Geomechanical behaviour of mining/civil tunnel, reservoirs etc. For modelling fractures in Geomechanics, prior art has been limited to Interface Elements which suffer from numerical instability and where faults are required to be aligned with element edges. In this paper, we consider comparative study on finite elements for capturing strong discontinuities by means of elemental (EFEM) and nodal enrichments (XFEM) for Geomechanical applications. For general fracture scenarios, Oliver et al. (2008) have demonstrated advantages of EFEM over XFEM for including: (a) ease of modeling in any standard finite element code due to the possibility of static condensation, (b) higher accuracy in some cases for coarse meshes, and, (c) a reduced computational cost. However, there has been no work that considers cohesive fractures in Geomechanics. We present a numerical analysis based on a linear constitutive model and linear triangular elements for the bulk and a linear constitutive behaviour for the fault for a representative set of fault planes in a circular tunnel made in rock mass. In the numerical examples we consider both well-traced and bad-traced meshes. We focus on traction profile analysis for both EFEM and XFEM, since that is crucial to understand the cohesive fracture behaviour specially rock joint. Therefore in each case, shear, normal and stress ratio are compared across the two methods along the fault plane. This is the first such work that compares XFEM and EFEM behaviour for Geomechanics problems.For the considered class of problems and the sharp penalization approach without regularizations adopted, it can be observed that accuracy and robustness of EFEM may strongly depend on the fault orientation with respect to the element edges, while, XFEM is independent of fault alignment with element edges. It has been also observed that, with mesh refinement model, stress oscillation completely removed with XFEM however EFEM fails to provide oscillation free results with finer mesh in case bad-traced model. We also performed error analysis and found that in case of bad-traced mesh the average error in the XFEM is 84% smaller than of EFEM and for XFEM the error goes to zero with increasing mesh resolution, while for EFEM the error increases with mesh resolution. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate that, XFEM performs better than EFEM in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence with marginal increase in computational cost. This work hence provides novel insights on the application of XFEM and EFEM in Geomechanics."

The concentrator of Bonneville Ltd.* at Wendover, Utah, processes a feed obtained by, solar evaporation of a brine containing sodium and potassium chlorides with minor amounts of impurities. Salable potassium chloride concentrateis produced from this feed in two steps: flotation with amine reagents to concentrate the potassium chloride, and washing of the concentrate with fresh water to reach final grade. In the flotation step emphasis is placed on recovery, whereas the washing step has as its objective the production of salable grade (in excess of 60 percent K20 equivalent), with recovery being important but secondary Ideally, flotation should give maximum recovery at a concentrate grade which will permit washing to salable grade with a minimum recovery loss, thereby maximizing over-all recovery. Except for this relationship, flotation and washing are two separate and distinct operations.

ROUGHLY one-half the value of mineral products at mines or quarries must be spent for wages. In view of the steady increase in hourly wages that continued for several decades prior to the onslaught of the recent depression, it is perhaps surprising to discover that labor's share of the gross proceeds of the mining and quarrying industries of the United States declined to 46.8 per cent in 1929, compared with 52.2 per cent in 1919 and 53.2 per cent in 1909. The actual percentages vary in different branches of the industry and in different localities but the downward trend is unmistakable. For the period 1909 to 1919 it was quite marked in every industry and from 1919 to 1929 it was apparent in all but six: namely, gold and silver lode mining, placer gold mining, crude gypsum production, marble quarrying, asbestos production, and fluorspar Tninino mining

Some of this has been induced by the Press but our own senses tell us that there is a visible haze over our cities on many mornings. IN surveying the changes that have taken place in the mining industry of Ontario in the past ten years, the striking growth of the gold mining industry first attracts attention. In 1925 there were only twelve regularly producing gold mines in the Province, six of which were located in the Porcupine area, four at Kirkland Lake, and one each at Larder Lake and Boston Creek. In contrast with this, the year that has just closed (1935) has seen production on a steady basis from forty mines, with what may be termed spasmodic production from twelve other properties. This so-called spasmodic production is, however, responsible for the recovery of gold to an estimated value of between $75,000 and $100,000 during the year. Further illustrating the expansion in the gold mining group is the activity in the exploration and development of properties. In 1925, mining operations were conducted at 29 properties which had not reached production, while in 1935 work of this nature was carried on at 87 such properties. It is of interest to note that of the six properties listed as producers in Porcupine ten years ago, five are still producing at rates considerably in excess of the tonnages handled at that time. In fact, the estimated tonnage treated at these mines in 1935 exceeds the 1925 tonnage by approximately half a million tons. In Kirkland Lake, the figures are still more striking. The four mines in production in that camp in 1925 milled 346,584 tons, producing bullion to the value of $5,132,128, while in 1935 these same mines treated approximately 1,643,000 tons, with a recovery of roughly $29,300,000. While Porcupine and Kirkland Lake remain the great gold-producing camps of the Province, the growing importance of the newer areas is readily appreciated when we consider that in 1935 the mills of these areas treated over 1,000,000 tons of ore for a production in excess of $7,500,000. Pro-duction from these newer districts first became of importance in 1930 with the commencement of recovery at the Howey mine, in Red Lake, and the Minto, in Michipicoten. Since 1930, eighteen new gold mills have gone into production in the Red Lake, Little Long Lac-Beardmore, Pickle Crow, Sturgeon Lake, Michipicoten, Sudbury, and Matachewan areas. In respect to silver mining, the period under review has seen a considerable slackening of activity, due to a generally unstable and depreciated price for the product and to the exhaustion of ore reserves in the mines.

The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. "Temperature affects several aspects of pyrometallurgical systems, including thermodynamics and reaction kinetics. Reliability of temperature measurements in laboratory and plant applications is thus important from process, safety and financial perspectives. This case study briefly introduces different techniques utilized for temperature validation, and demonstrates temperature validation on laboratory scale utilizing the wire-bridge method. Pt/Ptl3Rh thermocouple hot junctions were constructed by mechanically connecting thermocouple wires through a pure metal bridge consisting of copper, gold, nickel or palladium wire. When heating the wire-bridge thermocouple alongside a regular Pt/Ptl3Rh thermocouple, temperature offsets were quantified as the wirebridge thermocouple short-circuited at the melting points of the pure metals. At the melting points of gold (1064°C) and palladium (1555°C), average measured temperature offsets were -2.1°C ± 2.3°C and 0.2°C ± 0.4°C, respectively. Results from the copper and nickel wire-bridges were inconclusive. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential industrial applications of the technique.IntroductionThermocouples are probably the simplest of all temperature sensors, but are widely utilized due to simplicity, versatility and ability to handle a variety of experimental conditions and industrial applications. Additionally, thermocouples are often the only option in research laboratories requiring high temperature measurements, and a high level of reliability is usually required from thermodynamic, kinetic as well as safety points of view.The study presented here originated from a test program where the compatibility between different types of carbon-based refractory materials and industrial slag produced in silicomanganese furnaces were investigated on a laboratory scale utilizing the static crucible test[l]. Due to the nature of the silicomanganese production process, the compatibility tests were to be conducted at 1600CC[2]. Details of the experimental set-up utilized for the compatibility tests are discussed in the Experimental Set-up and Method Statement section later in this paper."

W. H. BLAUVELT, Syracuse, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read Mr. Howland's paper on Calculations with Reference to the Use of Carbon in Modern American Blast Furnaces with much interest, and believe that his method of analysis of the subject will be of material assistance in our study of the action of coke in the blast furnace. Mr. Howland quotes Professor Richards' statement that from the standpoint of the generation of the maximum quantity of heat in the furnace, Grüner was right in saying that all the carbon burned in the furnace should be first oxidized at the tuyères to CO and all reduction of oxides above the tuyères should be caused by CO, which thus becomes CO2. It is clear that the maximum quantity of heat is generated in the furnace when the greatest amount of carbon is burned to CO2 irrespective of whether it is burned at the tuyères or further up the furnace. So it would appear that Grüner's theory is sound regarding the maximum production of heat only because if all the carbon is burned to CO at the tuyères the reduction of the ores will have to be effected by the further oxidation to CO2. Whereas, if the reduction of the ores is effected in part by solid carbon, part of this carbon might be oxidized only to CO, resulting in a higher percentage of CO in the escaping gases than from Grüner's "ideal conditions.? But in studying the combustion of coke in the furnace, it is clear that the production of the maximum quantity of heat is not of the first importance in blast-furnace operation, or in the utilization of the fuel charged into the furnace. To my mind the production of a high thermal head at the tuyères is of the first importance, and the best coke is that which reaches the tuyères in proper condition to produce the highest temperature at the tuyères, and in just sufficient quantity to do the amount of work required there under the conditions produced by this maximum temperature. The combustion of a much larger amount of fuel at the tuyères, under conditions that will fall short of producing the highest possible temperature, cannot produce as good results, either in fuel economy or output. If this statement is correct, does it not correspond with Mr. Howland's statement that too much wind is inimical to low coke consumption? Nothing is more fatal to obtaining the highest temperatures than an excess of air for combustion. In the blast furnace an excess of air dilutes and cools the products of combus-

Extraction of minerals can be achieved by a variety of technologies; one of them is ion exchange. There are several ion exchange configurations and mechanical set-ups available, but only one technology will provide more process performance and flexibility compared to the other. The multiple column Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange (CCIX) technology provides the highest form of process flexibility with also the highest mineral recovery feasible through ion exchange. In comparison with a fixed bed system, the PuriTech CCIX system offers the benefits of continuous counter-current contact mode. This way the resin capacity is fully exploited leading to reduction in resin inventory and, at the same time, in chemicals and water consumption, and product dilution. For any set of operating conditions the mass transfer zone has a characteristic length (MTZL). The MTZL can be expressed in duration, column length, or volume, but is the measure of the quantity of resin in the system that is doing "work" at any given moment in the process. The objective of continuous ion exchange processing is to eliminate all resin volume from the process equipment that is not within a mass transfer zone. In most commercial ion exchange processes for the recovery of metals, CCIX engineering can eliminate as much as 20 - 80 % of the ion exchange resin inventory. Consumptions of water and chemicals are typically brought down around 40% or more. For each type of resin the selectivity/affinity towards a particular metal depends on the basic process conditions such as pH, concentrations of other competing metals in solution. By changing the pH in the ion exchange process phase, the selectivity of the resin can be changed. By doing this, a split elution, or extraction of metals separately can be achieved and the effect of other competing metals (cross-contamination) can be reduced. For example the DOW resin XUS43578 is commonly used for the recovery of copper or nickel/cobalt separation.

Wakrah and Wukair Drainage Tunnel, WWDT is 13 km long with a 4.5 m ID sewer water tunnel about 50 to 60 m below ground surface. Integral to the project are several adits with provisions for future connections as well as four work shafts, four intermediate access shafts, ancillary hydraulic structures, and an Odor Control Facility. The shaft depths range from 50 to 60 m. The project is constructed in aggressive ground with aggressive ground water. The construction activities require years of pumping and disposal of the ground water during tunneling operations as well as construction of permanent structures in shafts. Grouting of the corrosive rock mass in corrosive groundwater for the WWDT has been described in detail.

This paper presents an overview of methods that can be used to predict damage to buildings as a result of excavation-induced ground movements and describes an adaptive management approach for predicting, monitoring, and controlling excavation-induced ground movements. Successful updating of performance predictions depends equally on reasonable numerical simulations of performance, the type of monitoring data used as observations, and the optimization techniques used to minimize the difference between predictions and observed performance. This paper summarizes each of these factors and emphasizes their inter-dependence. Case studies are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this approach. Examples are given to show how optimized parameters based upon data obtained at early stages of excavation can be used to predict performance at latter stages, and how they can be applied to other excavations in similar geologic conditions.

The McLaughlin Mine is based on a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of northern California, about 1 12 air km (70 air miles) north of San Francisco. Owned and operated by Homestake Mining Co., the McLaughlin deposit contains about 18 Mt (20 million st) of gold ore at an average grade of 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st), or about 93 t (3 million oz). The area was identified as a gold target by Homestake in early 1978. Drilling confirmed it to be a commercial deposit by 1980. The mine was then planned, engineered, built and brought into production by March of 1985. The deposit was historically a part of the Knoxville District. It was mined for cinnabar, which was used to produce mercury for use in recovering gold and silver in the Mother Lode and Comstock districts. At that time, the mine was called the Manhatten and later the One Shot Mine. It was worked for more than 100 years, producing about 76,000 flasks of mercury without any awareness of the presence of economic concentrations of gold. By 1978, the site was largely disturbed and entirely unreclaimed.

The tellurium-rich region of the Sb-TI-Te ternary system was investigated by means of DTA, metallo-graphic, X-ray, and electron beam microprobe techniques on the sections Sb2Te3-T12Te3, SbTlTe2-Te, SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, and SbTlTe2-T12Te3. The phase behavior of this region is summarized in terms of four ternary invariant reactions and a schematic reaction diagram is suggested. Isopleths for the sections SbT1Te2-Sb2Te3, Sb2Te,-T12Te3, and SbTlTe2-Te were constructed, and a schematic diagram of the projections of the liquidus lines and invariant planes is presented. No evidence was found to support the existence of the ternary compound "SbTlTe3", or pseudo-binary behavior of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3, as reported by Borisova and Efremova. Electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity measurements were made at room temperature on fully annealed samples. 1 HE phase relationships in chalcogenides are often complex and difficult to resolve, particularly since the approach to equilibrium is a rather slow process. For example, the phase diagram of the T1-Te binary system was in doubt until clarified by Rabenau et al.,1 the phase fields at compositions near Bi2Te3 in the Bi-Te binary system have only recently been satisfactorily elucidated by Glatz,2 and there may still be some question as to the extent of the Sb2Te3 field in the Sb-Te system.3-5 In ternary systems, the existence of the compound "AgFeTe2" was the subject of a number of conflicting reports6-8 and the stoichiometry of the composition "AgSbTe2" was in doubt for a period of time.9 Recently, questions have arisen regarding the existence of certain compounds in the ternary systems Bi-Tl-Te10-14 and Sb-Tl-Te.15 The impetus for studies of these latter systems stemmed from the report of Borisova et a1.10 of a congruently melting ternary compound, "BiTlTe3", which apparently had extremely favorable thermoelectric properties for room-temperature cooling applications. Attempts by other investigators to produce the compound or confirm the transport properties proved to be unsuccessful.12-14 Recently, Chiang and Gluck14 reported studies of the phase relations in the tellurium-rich region of the Bi-T1-Te system which indicated that the section T12Te3-Bi2Te3 was not pseudobinary as suggested by Borisova et a1.10 The contention of Spitzer and sykes12 was supported that the composition "BiT1Te3" was multiphase, with the primary constituent actually being BiTlTe2, a compound whose existence has been well demonstrated.16,17 The investigation reported in the present paper was prompted by a later report of Borisova and Efremova15 on a similar study of the section T12Te3-Sb2Te3 from the Sb-T1-Te system. They also claimed this section to be pseudobinary, and that a ternary compound "SbTlTe," was formed peritectically. Some "preliminary" crystallographic data were given for the compound and thermoelectric transport properties were presented. In view of the questions concerning the behavior of the Bi-T1-Te system and the existence of the compound "BiT1Te3" it was suspected that the Sb-T1-Te system might behave in a similar fashion, particularly in light of the known existence of a compound SbT1Te2, iso-structural with BiT1Te2.17 Consequently, an investigation was undertaken to clarify the phase relationships in the tellurium-rich region of the Sb-T1-Te system. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of this study, including a representation of the phase relations, isopleths for various composition sections, and the determination of some phase compositions and transport properties. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Commercially available high-purity (99.999+ pct) elements, purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co., were used for the sample preparation. All samples were made from thoroughly mixed powders of previously prepared master alloys: SbTlTe2, Te, Sb2Te3, and T12Te3. Stoichiometric quantities of the constituents for each 10-g sample were weighed into a specially cleaned fused silica tube and sealed under a vacuum of better than 5 x 10-5 torr. The sealed constituents were fused and reacted at 650° to 750°C for at least 4 hr under continuous agitation in a "rocking" furnace, and the resulting product was air-cooled. The tube was opened and the sample was ground to a powder. A portion of the powder was rebottled in a DTA tube under vacuum, and the rest of the material was similarly resealed in a separate tube, re-fused in the rocking furnace, and again cooled to make the ingots for electrical and microstructural studies. All samples were subjected to further heat treatments as discussed in the section on experimental results. Each DTA tube was made of 7-mm-OD fused silica tubing with a concentric 2-mm-ID depression about 4 mm long formed in the bottom to accommodate a thermocouple. The size of a DTA sample was 0.5 to 1.0 g. An Aminco Thermoanalyzer whose accuracy was within 2°C18 was used for the DTA measurements. The metallographic samples were prepared by conventional techniques. A solution of FeCL dissolved in a methanol-HC1 mixture was found to be the most satisfactory etchant. Electron beam microprobe scanning and point-count examinations were made on polished and unetched samples using an ARL Electron Microprobe at an electron beam voltage of 20 kv. The detectors were set to receive characteristic La1 radiation. "Froth flotation circuits are widely used throughout the mineral processing industry for the concentration of fine particles. It had been estimated that nearly 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of ores are treated globally each year using this versatile separation process (Fuerstenau, 1999). Due to the high feed tonnage, a large economic incentive exists for flotation plant operators to optimize the performance of this critical processing circuit. Prior to the 1950s, the optimization of flotation circuits primarily involved the manual adjustment of operating variables based on visual observation and sporadic sampling (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson, 2010). During the next several decades, however, the advent of improved on-line instrumentation coupled with the rapid development of high-speed microprocessors allowed the industry to develop more advanced control systems that could quickly adjust operational parameters in response to disturbances in ore characteristics and plant flows. These early online controls typically involved feedback loops designed to stabilize cell performance through the automatic manipulation of process variables such as pulp levels, gas rates and chemical dosages. The set-points for these controllers were often set by plant operators based on one or more operator objectives, such as maximizing throughput, recovery or grade. More recently, these regulatory controllers have been interfaced with high-level data display and management systems that provide operators with the ability to better optimize flotation plant performance based on mathematical models and rule-based algorithms (Greet, 2010).While tremendous strides have been made during the past several decades, even the most modern flotation plants are still faced with the long-standing question: “What are we trying to optimize?” From an operator perspective, some common responses include “Maximize tonnage of saleable concentrate” or “Maximize metals recovery at a customer-specified market grade.” These replies may or may not reflect those of management, who often focus on economic goals such as “Maximize profits for each operational unit” or “Maximize rate of return for all corporate assets.” Unfortunately, these high-level objective statements do not always translate well into practice due to the disconnect between plant operating protocols and product value. Attempts have been made by industry to overcome this issue using various types of optimization routines such as linear programming or other optimization engines. While this approach does have some merit, these blind routines require considerable input data and interpretational expertise and provide little or no fundamental insight that can be used to drive improvements in concentrator performance."

"It has been shown that the economics of the hydrometallurgy of a rare earth process depend upon the amount of acid needed to extract the metal per unit mass of the ore. In this paper, we show how to save a significant amount of acid treating a low grade ferrocarbonatite and extracting +99% constituent REEs. In order to save the acid, the alkali earth metals, originated from gangue minerals were removed prior to REE leaching. Moreover, the operating conditions of leaching reactor are optimized to leave iron behind and to leach REE selectively and effectively. Consequently, the hydrochloric acid consumption per ton of ore drops significantly compared to other processes.INTRODUCTIONThe viability of an extractive metallurgy process of rare earth elements (REEs) to produce an intermediate mixed concentrate depends upon a low-cost simple flowsheet (Bogner, 2014). It has been known that regardless of the mineral, the acid consumption is intimately associated with the operational cost (OPEX) of any REE project, particularly when the initial REE grade is low. Besides acid, the other reagents consumed in the process impact the OPEX. This makes minimizing acid consumption in an REE method a critical priority. The acid consumption in different projects has been reported to be equivalent of 100 kg to 1000 kg HCl (100%) per tonne of ore (Average: 500 kg/t HCl 100%) (Bogner, 2014). This value is strongly correlated with the grade of REE in the ore and therefore in the pre-concentrate.Previously, it has been stated that the Montviel flotation concentrate requires about 300 kg HCl (100%)/t ore to attain +99% REE recoveries using direct leaching (Yu, Verbaan, Pearse and Britt 2013). Hence, for an ore feed rate of 2500 t/d ROM, a large acid production plant (744 t/d HCl 100%) would be required for acid leaching of such concentrate. The equivalent Chlor-alkali plant is estimated to cost M$ 150 (CAPEX) and may require 100 MW power. Therefore, there is a necessity to improve the extractive hydrometallurgy and to reduce the acid consumption significantly."
