Grade Engineering® is a term trademarked by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and includes five key levers for upgrading ores and rejecting waste prior to expensive downstream comminution and mineral processing. These five levers include natural deportment, induced deportment, bulk sorting, particle sorting and gravity separation. Over the past ten years, CRC ORE has progressed a range of technologies that exploit these levers from laboratory proof of concept through to large scale demonstration and validation. This paper details the work carried out by CRC ORE and Curtin University for assessing the amenability of an ore for its natural deportment and particle sorting attributes in an Integrated Screening and Particle Sorting (ISPS) Grade Engineering® process. ISPS is seen as a preferred method for Grade Engineering® as compared to individually operated unit operations as the benefits of each can be complementary. Furthermore, it is suggested that integrating the two levers has two important impacts: 1. Firstly, there is a risk that isolated particle sorting test results will be misinterpreted as being representative of the full sample without considering the mass balance impact of high-grade material that might have been lost in the fines fraction. This fine fraction will not be detected through the particle sorter. 2. Secondly, and potentially of more valuable impact, is that the opportunity may exist to upgrade the feed first through determining if there is a concentration of high grade to the fine (or coarse) fraction which can be separated through screening. Undertaking screening in the preparation stage of the particle sorting process will enable analysis and separation of the fine or coarse fractions of a rock mass. The result of this study provides the mining industry with an independent framework for undertaking an Order of Magnitude (ISPS) Grade Engineering® assessment on a range of constituent ore types. The target in grinding circuit operation is usually to maximise the throughput and energy efficiency while keeping the product particle size on an optimal level for downstream operations. Furthermore, feed ore variations in size and hardness need to be compensated in order to stabilise the process. This is a challenging task for any circuit and requires good instrumentation, combined with careful control design. This study investigates the control of a two-stage iron ore grinding circuit with an AG and pebble mill at LKAB Kiruna KA3 concentrator in northern Sweden. A new control approach based on multivariable model predictive control (MPC) is designed, implemented and evaluated for the circuit. Additionally, advanced instrumentation including a volumetric charge measurement for grinding mills is utilised. The MPC control approach starts with step tests that are used to model the effect of manipulated variables (MVs) like feed rate, water addition and primary mill speed on controlled variables (CVs) such as final product particle size, power consumption and volumetric charge of the mills. In the control implementation phase, the models are then utilissed together with current process measurements and known operating limits to predict optimal future changes for the manipulated variables in order to reach the desired process output values. In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. Com temperaturas altíssimas atingidas, os fornos são equipamentos responsáveis pelo aquecimento de materiais na produção de tubos sem costura. Assim, o investimento requerido de um forno em bom funcionamento é quase todo em combustível. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido objetivando a qualidade dos produtos e a otimização dos períodos em que o forno não produz. Durante os períodos citados, o forno é desligado ou mantido a uma temperatura menor que a de operação. Estudando a transferência de calor, principalmente no refratário, é possível analisar a melhor prática em situações improdutivas. Portanto, foi desenvolvido um simulador da temperatura dos refratários ao longo do tempo do forno em questão, sendo possível espelhar parâmetros reais para encontrar o controle de temperatura ótimo do forno, em que a temperatura da atmosfera interna é a principal entrada no programa. Termopares foram instalados ao longo das paredes refratárias para que o modelo fosse validado e aprimorado. Paralelamente, pontuou-se a relação dos materiais enfornados com as medições dos termopares, a fim de encontrar uma temperatura ideal de enfornamento. Os resultados foram positivos e permitem o uso de artifícios de refinamento dos resultados.

Este trabalho objetivou comparar, por meio de experimentos desenvolvidos em uma fundição, através da adição de três inoculantes diferentes (IM-22 com FeSi-Ba/Zr, G 20 com FeSi-Ba) e IMSR 75 com FeSi-Sr), para observar as características da vida util de ferramentas na usinabilidade das peças, microestrutura e propriedade mecânica. A metodologia da pesquisa se baseou em analisar principalmente pelo processo de fresamento o ferro fundido cinzento GG-25 inoculado diferentemente, denominado de acordo com a Norma DIN EN 1561. As formas de avaliação dos resultados terão como base uma análise quanto ao desgaste da ferramenta, acabamento superficial, análise microestrutural, composição química e propriedades mecânicas do material da peça. Os resultados mostraram que dentre os inoculantes aplicados o com Sulfeto de Estrôncio (SrS) apresentou-se mais estável termodinamicamente que as amostras inoculadas com os outros dois inoculantes, pois ele levou a uma variação da energia livre de Gibbs mais negativa e portanto mais favorável a formação de núcleos com raio crítico (rc) maiores, o que permitirá uma solidificação com nucleação heterogênea. Todavia o respectivo inoculante também foi mais eficiente na formação de uma microestrutura mais estável, com maiores quantidades de células eutéticas e vida útil do inserto mais longa quando usinado.

Com a preocupação ambiental, econômica e social perante o descarte de metais oriundos da mineração, busca-se por métodos alternativos e sustentáveis de tratamento e recuperação. Dessa forma, o processo escolhido foi o de troca iônica e o estudo investiga a adsorção do Co2+, Cu2+ e Ni2+ por meio da resina quelante Purolite S950. A resina foi escolhida pela sua capacidade de adsorção dos metais de transição de uma solução ácida. Portanto, o trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o efeito da variação do pH 0,5-2,0, considerando o tempo de contato de 120 min a 25 ºC. Os ensaios foram executados em batelada e as amostras analisadas pela técnica de espectrometria de fluorescência de raios-x de energia dispersiva (EDX). Por meio dos ensaios realizados, foi concluído que a resina quelante Purolite S950 utilizada no estudo foi capaz de remover os metais, destacando a extração de 96,3 % Co2+, 94,8 % Cu2+ e 75,3 % Ni2+, quando a solução estava condicionada em pH 2,0.

Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos apresentam interessante junção de propriedade mecânica com elevada resistência à corrosão. Porém, quando aplicados em temperaturas na faixa de sensitização e submetidos a ambientes agressivos, tornam-se suscetíveis à corrosão intergranular. Para verificação da suscetibilidade desses aços sofrem este fenômeno são realizados ensaios de corrosão. Dentre eles os mais utilizados são os contidos na norma ASTM A262, que possui cinco diferentes procedimentos. Este trabalho consiste na comparação dos procedimentos das Práticas A, C e E, contidos nessa norma, para determinação da tendência à corrosão intergranular do aço AISI 304L. Para isto, amostras do aço foram sensitizadas a 675°C por uma hora e em seguida submetidas aos diferentes ensaios descritos na norma. Após a realização dos três procedimentos, considera-se que a metodologia mais assertiva e confiável seja a Prática E, conhecido como ensaio de Strauss, e que as amostras analisadas não apresentaram corrosão intergranular.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is a high performance thermoplastic often selected for high temperature tribological applications under chemically aggressive environments. The present work evaluate the tribological behavior of a high performance PEEK composite under ambient and high temperature (30 and 80°C, respectively). The atmosphere was also varied (air or tetrafluorethane). An AMTI tribometer equipped with a hermetic chamber and a heating system was used to carry out sliding tests of PEEK cylinders on 304 stainless steel polished discs (Sq < 10 nm) with reciprocating movement and 175 N normal force. Surfaces roughness analyses were performed with a white light interferometer. As expected, there was a strong influence of temperature on the tribological behavior of the samples tested in ambient atmosphere (25% decrease in friction coefficient associated with a 100% increase in wear rate). On the other hand, samples tested in tetrafluorethane atmosphere showed no significant friction temperature dependence.

O aço carbono é um material amplamente empregado na indústria petrolífera devido sua elevada resistência mecânica e baixo custo. Entretanto, este material não possui boa resistência à corrosão. Neste contexto a predição da taxa de corrosão é de extrema importância para estimar a durabilidade desses materiais. Atualmente isto é feito com base em dados de ensaios de perda de massa em um único tempo de imersão, estimando-se a taxa de corrosão. Contudo, para converter os dados de perda de massa em taxas de corrosão é imprescindível que os ensaios sejam conduzidos em diferentes tempos de imersão e que haja linearidade entre perda de massa e tempo. Neste trabalho a corrosão do aço carbono em meios saturados com CO2 foi investigada através de ensaios de perda de massa em três tempos de imersão diferentes, com o objetivo de avaliar essa linearidade. Dos quatro meios corrosivos estudados, um não apresentou linearidade entre PM e tempo de imersão, sendo portanto incorreto extrapolar os dados para taxa de corrosão. Os resultados comprovaram que a extrapolação de dados de PM para taxas de corrosão não pode ser aplicada sem uma prévia verificação da linearidade entre perda de massa e tempo de imersão.

Em Conformação sob Fluência com Envelhecimento, do inglês Creep Age Forming (CAF), o material previamente solubilizado e temperado é carregado elasticamente (normalmente por flexão) e subsequentemente aquecido à temperatura de tratamento térmico de envelhecimento. Basicamente, a conformação se dá por meio de deformações provocadas simultaneamente pela tensão aplicada ao longo do tempo (fluência) e endurecimento por precipitação (envelhecimento). Sendo assim, pretende-se avaliar os efeitos dos parâmetros mencionados no retorno elástico, como tempo, temperatura, retorno elástico e propriedades mecânicas. Portanto foi avaliado, a variação do retorno elástico (springback) em função do tempo para a liga de alumínio AA7475 submetida a um carregamento de flexão durante o envelhecimento realizado em duas temperaturas diferentes (120°C e 150°C). Foi possível observar que quanto menor o tempo e a temperatura de envelhecimento, maior o retorno elástico. Portanto, quanto maior o retorno elástico da peça, mais próxima ela estará do seu formato original antes da conformação [1]. Em relação à dureza, foi observado que quando o material é submetido a uma temperatura de 120°C obtém-se um aumento significativo de dureza Vickers com o passar do tempo (atribuída a precipitação refinada) e a 150°C não ocorre esse aumento significativo dessa propriedade mecânica (atribuído a precipitação mais grosseira).

Strand guide rolls in continuous casters are crucial components for guaranteeing an optimum process for the production of high-quality steel grades. The properties of these rolls greatly influence the quality of the slab produced. The most commonly used designs so far have been the axle roll and the solid roll. A quite new roll concept is the STEC-Roll®. It combines the advantages of the axle roll with those of the solid roll. This paper explains the development of this roll type and shows the current design. The characteristics of the STEC-Roll® are presented in greater detail and are underlined by a number of simulation results. Beside the design itself, the benefits for casting and maintenance are explained, including for example the easy assembly and dismantling or the use of the roll for dry casting. A brief examination is made of the TCO for the STEC-Roll® and an estimation is provided of the exchangeability of this roll. To conclude, an overview on the current applications is presented.

A análise foi realizada com o apoio de literaturas sobre fractografia e fadiga.

Com o objetivo de encontrar uma solução inovadora e de baixo custo para o tratamento de efluentes domésticos, foi desenvolvido e implementado na ArcelorMittal Tubarão um sistema de tratamento utilizando escória de aciaria LD. O sistema, que se compreende de um Tanque de Recebimento; Tanque de Sedimentação; Filtro de Escória; e Redutor de pH foi objeto de estudo e teve sua eficiência medida em relação a sete fatores: Demanda Química de Oxigênio, Demanda Biológica de Oxigênio, E. Coli, Fósforo Total, Fósforo Dissolvido, pH, e Sólidos Suspensos Totais. De maneira geral, o sistema mostra-se eficiente, com destaque para as excelentes taxas remoção de E. Coli, Fósforo Total e Fósforo Dissolvido. O controle do parâmetro pH através de um método de baixo custo ainda representa um fator a ser superado, que quando consolidado permitirá uma nova aplicação para o material no tratamento de efluentes domésticos e rurais.

Os aços inoxidáveis possuem características essenciais para um bom acabamento quando o que se busca é estética e boa resistência à oxidação. O acabamento polido é muito utilizado em utensílios domésticos, eletrodomésticos e ponteiras de escapamentos de veículos. Em muitos casos são expostos à elevação de temperatura sendo sujeitos à oxidação a quente que pode causar o amarelamento da superfície desses aços. Através de ensaios de oxidação a quente, potencial eletroquímico, microdureza e tensão residual via difração de raios-x foi possível perceber uma diferença entre os acabamentos brilhantes via laminador com cilindros polidos e acabamentos obtidos pelo polimento de rebolos de panos e pastas abrasivas. O ensaio de tensão residual mostrou qualitativamente que o aumento de dureza e o forte amarelamento ocorrido no material com acabamento polido pode ser em função de uma deformação elástica na superfície imposta durante o processo na linha de polimento automático.

This work presents a series of experiments of Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG), which are intended to provide evidence about the main parameter controlling this phenomenon, whereas still no agreement about this, since the Paris´ theory is based on the principle that FCG is controlled by the ?K and the Elber´s theory says that the driving force is ?Keff. For the development of the experiments, some DC(T) specimens were machined with two different thicknesses: 2 and 30 mm to perform FCG tests in plane stress and plane strain state, respectively. Besides this, all FCG tests were carried out with a constant ?K e Kmax, measuring the strain with a Strain-Gage bonded on the back face of the specimen and seven Strain-Gages located on the crack growth path. The data needed to measure the crack opening load, and the ?Keff, were collected through a program developed in Labview. Finally, the data post-processing was carried out based on the ASTM standards and several articles of recognized authors in this field, in order to compare the two positions with the experimental data, and this way conclude which is the most consistent theory with the observed behavior.

Vários resíduos gerados nos processo siderúrgico são fonte de ferro e podem ser reciclados e reintegrados de volta ao ciclo produtivo do ferro. Exemplos incluem pós de coletores e despoeiramento, carepas e lamas. Estes materiais são geralmente classificados como rejeitos e são descartados em aterros a um alto custo, mas adquirem um valor significante quando reciclados e reutilizados apropriadamente. O presente estudo consiste em demostrar a viabilidade da utilização destes resíduos em um processo de mini sinterização, plantas de sinterização produzindo até 1 milhão de toneladas por ano. O produto obtido apresenta propriedades químicas e físicas adequadas para carregamento direto no alto-forno, para utilização como nucleante na sinterização, ou como refrigerante no convertedor. O balanço do zinco e dos álcalis é de extrema importância para viabilizar um sínter final com qualidade requerida e será analisado neste estudo. Conclui-se que a utilização dos resíduos citados é economicamente viável e o estudo de caso apresentado neste trabalho comprova o benefício com retorno significativo.

Emulsions are frequently used for the cooling and lubrication of working rolls during the cold rolling. The fact that the lubrication and cooling are not separable makes the optimization of both functionalities difficult. The higher emulsion temperature decreases the cooling efficiency compared to cold water. Heat transfer and fluid flow laboratory (Czech Republic), CRM (Belgium), Tata steel (Netherlands) and Henkel (Germany) cooperated on the increasing of a cooling efficiency during cold rolling. Part of this research was focused on an influence of the emulsion composition on a cooling intensity. The cooling efficiency was laboratory investigated. The stainless steel sample with thermocouple was heated and then it was cooled by a nozzle. Tests were performed with various emulsions and pure water. The heat transfer coefficient was computed from measured temperatures. The cooling intensity (heat transfer coefficient) of all tested emulsions was similar but an increase of the cooling intensity was found with water. Further various emulsions concentrations were tested. Results showed decreasing cooling intensity with increasing oil concentration. Adding additives therefore is thought to cause a noticeable decrease of the cooling intensity.

A quick glance at a-portion of the title of this discussion -&apos;Rolling With The Punch" may immediately lead you to assume that I am about to expound on the so-called manly art of self-defense. So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth&apos; and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

THE COAL DIVISION started its share of the annual meeting Monday morning with a study of coal classi fication. A. C. Fieldner was in the chair. The report of the tellers of the ballot for division chairman, stating that Thomas G. Fear had been elected to that office, was read by M. D. Cooper. Mr. Fear acknowledged the honor in a few words. In reviewing the history of the Coal Classification Committee the chairman pointed out that this was its third symposium, the last previous one having been held at the 1930 Annual Meeting. Throughout its work the com¬mittee has had the active cooperation of the Canadian workers who are interested in the subject which should result in a uniform scheme of classification in Canada and the United States. F. E. Lathe, of the National Research Council, Ottawa, abstracted the first two papers of the session entitled "Determination of the Alkali-Soluble Ulmins in Coal," by Edgar Stansfield and K. C. Gilbart, and "Moisture Determination for Coal Classification," by the same authors. The third paper "Condition of Water in Coals of Various Ranks"&apos; was presented by its author, A. W. Gauger. Written discussions of these papers were presented by H. C. Porter and Gilbert H. Cady. In the oral discussion which followed, W. T. Thom, Jr., brought out the advisability of considering age as a factor in classification. Mr. Fieldner favored retaining bed moisture as a partial classification basis, stating that a review of many coal analyses revealed a remarkable consistency in this item in samples from a given mine particularly where the moisture content was not high. Mr. Porter pointed out that the structure and porosity of coal often have much to do with its moisture content and that these vary in different parts of a seam, particularly in anthracite. Mr. Gauger expressed doubt as to whether the Stansfield method gives the true moisture content of coal, which is needed for classification purposes.
