The hydrologic characteristics of two abandoned underground coal mine sites, near Latrobe, PA, and Uniontown, PA, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for possible implementation of alkaline injection into the mine pools as a means of abating their acid discharges. The Latrobe site was chosen for a one-time application of alkaline injection to achieve a partial, short-term neutralization of a limited portion of the mine pool. A quantity of alkaline reagent (sodium hydroxide) sufficient for a one-time neutralization of the water in this portion of the pool was added. Although nearly all of the neutralizing reagent had moved away from the injection wells within 6 weeks, no evidence of neutralization was noted at the mine discharge during the study period. This lack of neutralization probably occurred because the injection wells did not intercept a primary flow path through the mine. Criteria for successful application of alkaline injection at this or other sites include (1) positive identification of the primary flow paths through the mine pool and (2) addition of quantities of alkaline reagent sufficient to neutralize the entire volume of the pool along the primary flow path.

Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the 'mild steel' of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

Both, Teck Carmen de Andacollo (Teck CDA) and Orica, work hard in the implementation of new technologies available in the explosives industry and drilling and blasting techniques, with the objective of sustainable development of their operations, regeneration, and protection of the environment, also considering the welfare and relationship with the surrounding communities. The open-pit Carmen de Andacollo mine is located adjacent to the town of Andacollo. Therefore, both companies together have developed the implementation of different techniques and technologies to mitigate the impacts of mining operations in the community, considering an important part of this challenge to minimize the impact of their perception of blasting by reducing the level of vibrations and sound pressure (airblast), in addition to the control of dust and smoke, strengthening sustainable production in harmony with communities. The technologies and techniques that have been implemented are the installation of airblast and vibration monitoring stations stands out, whose database has records since 2011. Using the vibration database, different models were developed to predict the vibration level of blasting in its design phase, achieving a difference of 4.1% between the estimated and measured values in the last year. Two techniques stand out to minimize the ejection of material, "Hydraulic Dome" and "Dual layer blasting", the first consists of water irrigation on the surface to be blasted and the second is an unconventional blasting technique, which was awarded in 2015 for its results in the environment. Also pre-splitting engineering has been modified in a positive evolution, where through different configurations, the airblast has been reduced by 15% compared with records from 2011 to 2022. Finally, due to the impact of operational restrictions, such as days available to blast, number of holes, and powder factors, the wireless initiation technology was implemented, which allowed reducing the limitations in the loading, generating an improvement in terms of blasted materials over conventional systems. Understanding the restrictions and challenges in terms of impact on communities, the correct implementation of all these techniques is important, and in conjunction with collaborative work, it has been shown and validated that producing in a sustainable and sustainable manner is possible.

The Ladd manganese deposits are in San Joaquin County, Calif., about 13 miles southwest of Tracy. The deposits are confined in two main areas of development, roughly about 1,700 feet apart horizontally, and known as the Ladd mine and Fabian mine, respectively. The deposits occur as interbedded lenses in the white cherts of the Franciscan formation. The ore minerals are bementite, rhodochrosite and psilomelane. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development program was started. August 24, 1940, and completed on June 24, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road building, trenching, rehabilitating the mine workings, trenching underground excavation, sampling, and core drilling. The following pages mention the location, give a brief history, and note the physical features of +1-.1, district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill hole logs.

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman's trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

Titanium is an alloying element used to refine grain size in steel and improve its physical and mechanical properties. In some stainless steels it is used to increase the resistance to corrosion by the precipitation of titanium carbides or carbonitrides. Its alloying performance is highly variable and depends largely on the stage of the secondary metallurgy process when it is added. Furthermore, the addition method (wire injection or direct addition) has a remarkable influence in secondary refining. This paper describes the tests performed in vacuum degasser (VD), with a highly compacted and encapsulated Ferrotitanium wire (FeTi HC). The yield of titanium in steel increased from 52% to 89%. Moreover, the consumption of the highly compacted Ferrotitanium was optimized.

This paper describes the technical development of the Newman beneficiation plant over its 23 years of operation and how this development relates to the mine ore reserves of high-grade and low-grade ore. It also discusses the importance of the beneficiation product grades in the overall blending of shippable products from a range of mines to optimise overall ore resource utilisation. Also discussed is the importance of the ore reserve reconciliations in resource utilisation. Data is provided on the capacity and quality improvement results of the plant upgrade, carried out in 1999. This shows how the original capacity upgrade targets have been exceeded and the additional quality benefits that have been obtained from this capacity.

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

"The hydration heat of the pure cement, the fly ash single-dopped cement, as well as the fly ash and fluorgypsum co-dopped cement were investigated by means of micro-calorimety with an eight-channel micro-calorimeter (TAM Air). The results showed that the hydration heat and the hydration rate could be reduced significantly by fly ash and fluorgypsum. However, the reduction was not proportional to the loading of dopant. The exothermic peak of the fly ash and fluorgypsum co-doped cement was appeared earlier than the fly ash single-doped cement. As the temperature decreased, the hydration heat and the hydration rate of the doped cement were reduced, and the exothermic peak appeared later. The effects of fly ash and fluorgypsum on the compressive strength of cement were also investigated. The results revealed that the early compressive strength of concrete made up of the co-doped cement was largely higher than that of the fly ash single-doped cement. Based on the experiment results obtained in this paper, we could conclude that fluorgypsum is a suitable additive for fly ash-doped cement.IntroductionFly ash and fluorgypsum are industrial waste. In 2008, nearly 400 million tons of fly ash has been produced by coal-burning power plants in China. And it is estimated that this number would exceed 500 million at the year of 2015. Besides, every year the fluoride salt factories in China discharge more than 100 million tons of fluorgypsum. Tremendous of fly ash and fluorgypsum occupy considerable land and contaminate air and water sources [1]. As a result, comprehensive utilization of this two industrial waste has draw great attention from all over the world.Cement is the most-used construction material on earth. But the production of cement consumes huge energy and destroys the environment. This problem might can be partly solved by applying fly ash and fluorgypsum as additive for cement [2-4]. During the last decade, some papers that focused on applying fly ash and fluorgypsum as additive for cement have been published [5, 6]. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of these papers investigated the hydration heat of the fly ash and fluorgypsum co-doped cement.The hydration of cement is an exothermic reaction, which can result in serious problem for mass concrete: The interior of the concrete could reach very high temperature as the hydration proceeded [7-9]. As a result, the great temperature difference between the interior and the outer of the concrete would exist and cause serious thermal stresses. Thus, the concrete would be destroyed by the cracks which in tum are resulted from the thermal stresses [10, 11]. The heat released by the cement hydration and the hydration rate is commonly regulated by adding mixed materials or transferring additive such as fly ash and fluorgypsum [12-14]."

The thermal insulation of high-temperature equipment for industrial purposes is a subject that has not received from engineers and designers the attention its importance deserves. This may be attributed to a number of causes: In the first place, heat flow is a rather difficult factor to measure under the working conditions of an industrial furnace, and until the comparatively recent introduction into certain operations of the heat balance sheet, with a systematic attempt to account for the discrepancies in the totals, the various causes of heat losses and the reasons for their existence were not brought to light. Moreover, such rapid advancement and radical changes in the design of equipment, especially in metallurgical lines, have occurred that practice has apparently outdistanced the theory of design. In the modern tendency toward greatly increased size of units, effort has seemingly been made to utilize the heat of fuel gases without proper attention having been paid to conserving heat energy and confining it strictly to the points of maximum activity. The systematic study of the thermal properties of structural materials, which is being carried out by various government bureaus and also by a number of technical societies, is forming the basis for more intelligent and consistent work in the economically important subject of prevention of fuel waste. Advantages of Insulation It is not necessary in this practical and utilitarian age to enlarge upon the need of prevention of heat losses, but attention may advantageously be called to the other benefits derived simultaneously with the saving in fuel and the increase in thermal capacity of furnaces when properly insulated. Salts and their mixtures play an important role for industrial and energy sectors, eg metallurgy, biomass gasification and combustion, nuclear and solar powerplants and electrochemical processes. Depending on the composition of salts (eg Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ // NO3-, F-, Cl-, CO32-, SO42-, etc), the temperature range for different applications can vary starting from room temperature and going up to 1500°C. For the proper design and modelling of heat exchangers and other equipment, it is necessary to have reliable and validated data sets of thermophysical properties. The 50 mol per cent NaNO3 – 50 mol per cent KNO3 salt mixture as a well-studied composition was selected for validation of relevant thermophysical properties (heat capacity, enthalpy of phase transitions, thermal expansion, viscosity and thermal conductivity). To study these properties of the liquid phase, special crucibles and approaches should be implemented. Verification of these crucibles for different methods (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), laser flash analysis (LFA) and rheometers) has been performed. The low thermal conductivity of salts is one of the main problems in implementing latent heat storage. In this project, the authors intend to develop a fundamental solution to this problem using chemically bonded metals with salts. These are known as metal-salt solutions. To fit the main parameters of new phase change materials to the requirements of thermal energy storage, a wide variety of possible combinations should be considered. CALPHAD modelling is used together with thermal analysis for the development of a consistent thermodynamic database including chloride salts (Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca // Cl) and corresponding metals (Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca). The results of the study of quasibinary and multicomponent metal-salt (eg Mg-KCl and Ca-KCl) systems as well as the selection of suitable crucible materials and challenges by studying of these systems will be discussed.

Gunite was invented in 1907 by Carl Akeley to repair a crumbling facade of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. The method used was to blow dry material out of a hose with compressed air and inject water at the nozzle as it was released. In 1911, he was granted a patent for his invention, the ‘cement gun’; the equipment used; and ‘gunite’, the material that was produced.The advantages of using the dry mix process is that the water content can be adjusted instantaneously, allowing more effective placement in overhead and vertical applications without using accelerators. The dry mix process is useful in repair applications when it is necessary to stop frequently as the dry material is easily discharged from the hose.This paper describes the applications and principles of the gunite pump system in underground coal mining and discusses why it is the preferred spraying system for both cement and plaster products.It also addresses improving productivity and examines dust, respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and health issues around gunite pump systems. Australia as a leading producer of mineral sands has also occupied a leading position in many areas of research'in the processing and applications of these minerals. Research in upgrading ilmenite to produce synthetic rutile has resulted in the develop- ment of many processes, e.g,., Becher, Murso, Chlorine Technology, and ICI processes. Studies on the reducibility of ilmenites, aqueous leaching of reduced ilmenites, Fe-Ti-O system, leachability of natural and treated ilmenites in hydrochloric acid and selective chlorination of iron from ilmenites have been carried out in order to develop and improve the efficiency of the above processes. While research on the processing of zircon sand to produce high purity (99.99% ZrO2 zirconia powder and zirconium chemicals started only recently, research by CSIRO in the early 1970s led to the discovery of the phenomenon of transformation toughening in partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) ceramics. Australia, with very significant resources of lanthanide-containing ores, pro- duces substantial quantities of monazite each year but research in processing and appli- cations of rare earths was neglected in recent years in this country. However, research to improve processes for the recovery of rare earths is now under way and studies on the production and testing of Nd-B-Fe magnets which are 1.5-2 times stronger than the strongest magnets (Sm-Co) currently available, have also commenced.' An overview of the research in the pro- cessing and applications of mineral sands during the last two decades in Australia and its implications for the industry are pre- sented in the paper.

MOST mining engineers and geologists realize the value of photographs in their professional work. Members of each group use photographs to illustrate their reports, and articles and photographs, when available, will often save many words of written text in explaining some point or in proving some pet theory. No one hesitates to take aboveground pictures but many rarely take their cameras underground. However, underground photography, too, is really simple. I do not believe that anything new is offered here and the procedures given are merely a compilation of various methods I have tried and used, with some success, over the past six or seven years. The article will deal with photographs to be taken in metal mines, but only in those where no gas hazard exists, with resultant danger of explosions and fire. Some mining company geologists consider the camera a necessary part of their equipment and carry one on their daily trips to the various parts of the mine under their observation. I know of one company whose files of geologic sketches of heading, backs. and veins are supplemented by actual photographs so that a nice geologic picture
