Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24v0 of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50v0 of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include: • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. • Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

1. Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. (See also discard; dirt; stone, No. 1.12). 1.1 1 Reject-the material extracted from the feed during cleaning, for retreatment or discard. 1.12 Discard; dirt; stone--the material extracted from the raw coal and finally discarded. 1.13 Recirculation-the operation in which the whole or part of a product from a process is returned to the feed to the process, e.g., the return of the crushed overflow from a screen to the screen feed for rescreening. 1.14 Foreign coal-coal received at a preparation plant from a colliery other than that to which the plant is attached. 1.15 Imported coal-coal coming from a foreign country, or other state within the country. 1.16 Low-grade coal combustible material that has only limited uses owing to undesirable characteristics (eg., ash content or size). 1.17 Segregation-partial separation of a previously mixed material into its constituents, occurring as a result of differences in either particle size or relative density. 2. Cleaning Characteristics 2.1 Washability-amenability of coal to improvement in quality by cleaning. 2.2 Float-and-sink analysis-the division of a sample into relative density fractions with defined limits, the proportions of the fractions being expressed as percentages of the total sample, commonly with an indication of the ash percentage (and other characteristics, if required) of each fraction.

INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

This paper will describe design of precast segmental tunnel lining for the Pawtucket CSO Tunnel Project in Providence, Rhode Island. The tunnel is 11,700 LF long with 30-foot finished diameter to be constructed in complex sedimentary rocks. Special features of the segments include a large keystone and no connector used on radial joints. The typical segments will be steel fiber reinforced, and hybrid segments with additional steel rebars and shear bicones will be used around the adit openings without use of any structural framing. The important design considerations will be discussed, including special 3D segment to adit connection analyses performed.

The MODSIM mineral processing plant simulator is used to find optimal combinations of target separation specific gravities in a typical modem coal washing plant. A plant that is set up with these optimal targets can deliver up to 10% more yield at the same ash content as the same plant set up with separation targets chosen by conventional methods. MODSIM is the only simulator currently available that can simulate the liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter during open-and closed-circuit grinding operations. The simulator can therefore be used to assess the benefits of grinding operations in the flowsheet.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

In-plane bending and torsion tests were conducted on full-scale masonry walls to evaluate three post-reinforcement designs. The designs were developed to minimize longwall mine subsidence damage to existing residential masonry foundations. The bending tests show that vertical and horizontal post tensioned tendons significantly increase the resistance of a masonry wall' to in-plane bending. The torsion tests reveal that post tensioned tendons increase a masonry wall's limit of deformation but do not increase its torsional stiffness. The torsion tests also show that the masonry units minimally contribute to the torsional stiffness of a masonry wall.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

Progressive Design-Build is becoming a more common delivery method in the tunneling industry. This approach allows the Owner to select a design-builder primarily based on qualification instead of lowest price. The delivery method promotes flexibility and collaboration at all levels from the initial design stage through construction. Using the example of the Atlanta Airport Plane Train Tunnel West Extension, value-added risk management was added during the initial design phase with an independent reviewer. This paper presents the independent reviewer transitioning from constructability review in the very early stages of design to independent design verification to on-site supervision during construction.

Hachinohe smelter, a zinc-lead blast furnace complex with the annual capacity of zinc plus lead of 100,000 tons, had originally treated normal zinc and lead sulfide concentrates. However, it is currently handling a great variety of raw feeds ranging from complex sulfides to oxidic recycled materials in view of resource economy, most of which are unsuitable for zinc electrolysis. This paper reports on some significant efforts recently carried out on improving sintering operation, i.e., the increasing use of secondaries against harmful ingredients like halogens, and the substantial reduction in energy use as the results of various modifications and improvements.

Teleoperation is a technology that can provide significant health and safety improvements in mining, by relocating machine operators hundreds of meters away from the face area. The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a teleoperation system for continuous mining and haulage equipment. This system features near-real-time closed-loop control. A prototype system was developed and demonstrated on the surface. This system could be used in thin-seam applications down to 914 mm. Details are provided on the developed teleoperation system, results of testing, and expected, future applications of this technology for improved safety.

Recovery of phosphate concentrate has received increased attention as the existing mine and plant production capacity limitations of the Texasgulf Inc. Aurora, North Carolina Mine are reached. Improved mining techniques and mineral processing of waste streams offer a potential to increase overall phosphate production without major expansion of the Mining facility. Innovative processes have been or are being identified to maximize pit mining recovery and to minimize losses in waste streams, resulting in more effective use of the valuable phosphate natural resource. This paper will describe the various continuous recovery improvement programs being implemented to achieve this goal.

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project consists of a 23 ft diameter, 27,000 ft long, CSO tunnel, multiple underground connections, and significant surface works within an urban corridor. The NEBT alignment depths range from 60 to 140 ft and includes seven shafts ranging in depth from 77 to 155 ft with diameters varying from about 19.5 to 56 ft, some as in-line connections and others required adits for connection to the main tunnel. This paper focuses on the design and construction of two major underground connections which are the First Street Connector Tunnel and the Mount Olivet Road Diversion Sewer.

In this study, research on the use of monosodium glutamate for copper leaching, with emphasis on the thermodynamics and oxidant characteristics, is presented. Copper dissolution was conducted following a hydrometallurgical route, using monosodium glutamate in alkaline solutions. The effect of oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4), and the efficiency of copper leaching with glutamate compared with glycine have been studied. Results, obtained at room temperature, showed 92% recovery of copper using 0.03 M hydrogen peroxide, 0.5 M monosodium glutamate at a pH of 9.44.

A two level risk analysis procedure which is specially designed for use in river environments, is presented. The first level risk assessment (Level I) is often adequate for purposes of most projects, and entails hazard assessment, exposure identification, consequence estimation, and risk characterization. Two unique features of the method are the Composite Hazard Rating system, which is used in hazard assessment, and a formalized decision model for risk characterization. The risk characterization procedure provides information on the acceptability of risks, can be used to distinguish between the relative severity of risks, and to evaluate whether more advanced risk assessment would be required.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

Barrick Gold Corporation installed an expert style control system on the grinding circuit at its Mercur mine. Barrick's main objective was to increase mill throughput by a minimum of 3%. The expert system team collected operating data and then created a knowledge base using Comdale/X expert system development software. The expert system moved from on-line "advisory" mode, testing of expert rules, to full process control in four weeks. Expert system control benefits include a 9-15% increase in mill throughput, consistent mill loading leading to less wear on SAG mill parts, and improved downstream process control.
